Bellator 124 GIFs: Emanuel Newton’s Spinning Backfist, Liam McGeary’s Inverted Triangle

Emanuel Newton ended Bellator 124 on a satisfying note this evening, with a smooth-as-butter spinning backfist knockout of “challenger” Joey Beltran. This is the second spinning backfist KO that Newton has scored under the Bellator banner; he caught King Mo with the same strike at Bellator 90 last February. Watch the GIF of Newton’s latest masterpiece above, and click here for a slo-mo alternate angle, all via Zombie Prophet.

After the jump: Liam McGeary submits Kelly Anundson with an inverted triangle to win the Season Eleven Light Heavyweight tournament, and Ryan Couture chokes out Tom Bagnasco.

GIF of the Day: Takuya Eizumi’s Epic Victory Trollface

(Props: r/MMA)

There are only two appropriate reactions to winning an MMA fight. You can either find the nearest camera and do the throat-slitting gesture. Or, you can point at a random member of the crowd, lean to the side, and…sorry, I have no idea what the hell this is.

Here we have Japanese flyweight Takuya Eizumi giving us nightmares after outpointing Yusei Shimokawa at Pancrase 259 last month. The MMA troll-face game is heating up, folks. Fabricio Werdum needs to step his game up if he hopes to stay competitive.

Broken Shin of the Night: Magomed Malikov Catches a Bad Break Against Brett Rogers [GIF]

(More proof that leg kicks finish fights. / Props: GrabakaHitman via MiddleEasy)

Seriously? How in the hell does this keep happening?

Proving that the MMA shin-break bug can strike at any time, Russian heavyweight Magomed Malikov snapped his leg earlier today while kicking Brett “Da Grim” Rogers at Fight Nights: Battle of Moscow 16. Rogers didn’t even check the kick, Destruction-style — Malikov’s leg just kind of fell apart on impact. Horrible. Anyway, good night everybody!

GIF of the Day: Kevin Casey KO’s Andrew Sanchez, Referee Mike Beltran Uses Sanchez as Grappling Dummy

(Props: Zombie Prophet)

TUF 17 vet/gangsta rapper Kevin Casey won the RFA middleweight title on Friday night, with a thunderous first-round knockout of previously undefeated Andrew Sanchez. Like any good referee, Mike “The Walrus” Beltran dived in to cover Sanchez’s body from further punishment. What happened next is slightly harder to explain, but basically, Beltran used Sanchez’s half-conscious body as a Bubba dummy, transitioning from side-control to an arm-triangle choke, then used his own braided moustache to tie Sanchez’s wrists together (not really). Anyway, it was awesome in a Cecil Peoples-esque “WTF are you doing?” sort of way.

Brutal KO of the Day: Major Overall Destroys Bruno Pucci via Soccer Kick at OneFC 16 [GIF]

(Props: @ZombieProphet)

This little bit of savagery just went down at OneFC 16: Honor and Glory in Singapore, where a featherweight prospect named Major “Majee” Overall knocked out Bruno Pucci ice-cold with a soccer-kick to the face. PRIDE-style soccer kicks have been legal in OneFC since September 2012, following the controversial outcome of Andrei Arlovski vs. Tim Sylvia 4.

Note: Ben Askren will be making his promotional debut in the main event of today’s OneFC card, which is still going on at the time of this writing. Askren is fighting a guy named Bakhtiyar Abbasov. We’ll update this post if anything GIF-worthy happens. UPDATE: Askren subbed that dude with an arm-triangle choke in the first round.

Bob Sapp Retires: A Legendary Life, In GIFs

(This is happening right now. Don’t fight it.)

During Saturday’s episode of Submission Radio, combat sports icon Bob Sapp announced that he was walking away from professional fighting at the age of 40, after more than 12 years competing in mixed martial arts and kickboxing. Sapp claimed that he’s retiring with over $10 million in the bank, thanks to a combination of wise investing and his infamous (but income generating) “world tour,” in which he lost 12 consecutive MMA fights in 12 different countries since 2011.

“I no longer have a need to go into the ring for 40,000 for a fight when I’m making, well last month it was somewhere in that realm of over 1 million dollars,” Sapp told Submission Radio. “I don’t need to do that any longer.”

Sapp also went 1-13 in kickboxing since September 2005 — his only victory being an unexpected TKO win via injury — although he saw tremendous success as of late in celebrity arm-wrestling tournaments.

It’s hard to know how we should remember a man whose career saw him go from the terrifying “Beast” of his early K-1 appearances to a walking punchline, who developed a persona better than almost any other pro fighter in history — and became a cultural icon in Japan as a result — who was nakedly candid about his motivations and didn’t seem to give a damn about his reputation as an athlete. Bob Sapp was an entertainer, and truly great at what he did. His career touched professional wrestling, acting (Frankenhood!), and fast-food pizza. He was so much more than just a huge guy swinging his fists at his smaller opponents, although he was that too.

As Internet custom dictates, we will now honor Bob Sapp’s departure with a collection of his greatest GIFs. Check ‘em out after the jump, and hit the “Next Page” buttons for more…

Morning GIF: Brian Rogers Destroys Adrian Miles With a Flying Knee at Bellator 119

(Props: @ZProphet_MMA)

Two weeks after Chris Beal gave us a spectacular walk-off flying knee knockout in the UFC, Bellator middleweight Brian Rogers landed one of his own against Adrian Miles, during the prelims of last night’s Bellator 119 event in Rama, Ontario, Canada. The way Miles crumples in a Nelmark-esque heap is pretty gnarly — especially because his eyes remain open when he’s out. Yeesh.

This was actually Rogers’s third career victory via flying knee. You can see his previous two after the jump…
