Freak Show of the Decade Alert: Jose Canseco Calls Out Shaq, Shaq Happily Accepts

(Nineteen years later, we may finally find out how effective Shaq Fu is as a martial art.)

It’s been nearly four years since former Major League Baseball slugger Jose Canseco was defeated during the opening round of DREAM’s Super Hulk Tournament, but that hasn’t stopped him from attempting to find another MMA fight. Come to think of it, that last sentence isn’t entirely accurate. Let’s try again: It’s been nearly four years since Jose Canseco decided to get his ass kicked by Hong Man Choi, yet he’s still attempting to exploit MMA like it’s a former teammate’s steroid usage.

His most recent effort involved calling out former NBA center Shaquille O’Neal via his Twitter account. Shaq — already a big MMA fan with actual training under his belt — didn’t take kindly to being called out by a snitch. At this point, you’re probably already like…

…but you really have to see Shaq’s response for yourself, available after the jump.

Five NBA Players Who Could Crossover to MMA During the Lockout

If Chris Andersen had half the mean mug that Anthony Johnson has, he’d have a spot on this list.

With the NBA lockout in full effect, many players are beginning to weigh their options for ways to stay busy. Kevin Durant is considering playing overseas, while Nate Robinson is considering a jump to a more attractive lockout. With the way that things are looking, it shouldn’t be a surprise to see an NBA player decide to put on the four ounce gloves and try his hand at MMA.

Normally, lists that focus on tough NBA players are composed of cheap shots, sucker punches and bush league fouls. This is not one of them (Ed. note: For the most part, at least). This is also not a fusion of this year’s All Star teams made under the assumption that all it takes is a lot of success in one sport to be a professional MMA fighter. We already have numerous examples disproving this. One more rule: Retired NBA players, like Charles Oakley and Jerry Stackhouse, are ineligible.

Rather, this list will focus on current players who may realistically accept an MMA fight during the NBA lockout. Coincidentally, most of them are heavyweights. Let’s start by getting this guy out of the way as soon as possible:

5.) Ron Artest, F, Los Angeles Lakers

Videos: Shaq Shills for the WEC, Jesse Taylor is Ready for War + More

(Props: YouTube.com/UFC)

Well this is interesting. The WEC convinced die-hard MMA fan Shaquille O’Neal to cut a promo for their Cerrone vs. Henderson show on September 2nd. "They’re lucky I’m a heavyweight," Shaq says. Still, would it have killed you to knock over a cardboard cutout of Cowboy? In a related story, O’Neal’s upcoming ABC series Shaq Vs. will be hosted by the UFC’s own Mike Goldberg.

Videos: Gina Carano vs. Satan, Shaq Works on His Superman Punches + More

(Props: ShoSports via BloodyElbow)

Yes, Gina Carano is training her ass off for her upcoming fight against Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos. In the above video, heartless strength and conditioning coach Norm Turner puts MMA’s golden girl through the ringer, pushing her dangerously close to the point of vomiting/calling for her mommy. Is Cyborg training this hard? Or is she just choking reporters, throwing around her husband, and relying on her genetic advantages to see her through? Whatever the case, workouts like these are ensuring that Carano will be ready for anything…

Shaq Is Not Going to Fight Chuck Liddell, ESPN Lady

ESPN "First Take" brought Shaquille O’Neal’s personal trainer on so he could talk about the Diesel’s MMA training and mention the name of his gym and its website no less than a dozen times.  The interviewer here seems oddly amused by her own ignorance of MMA, and really presses this guy to give her odds on the possibility of a Shaq vs. Chuck Liddell fight in the UFC.  Let me put it to you this way, lady: there’s about as much chance of that fight happening in the UFC as there is of you taking over for Larry King when he finally retires/dies.  Got it now?
