[VIDEO] This is What a Diaz Family Reunion Looks Like

We won’t waste much of your time with another behind-the-scenes look into the life of Nick Diaz, but there is something fascinating — sublime, really — about these videos that we here at CagePotato simply cannot look away from. The latest entry (and by “latest,” we mean uploaded in 2009) in the Diaz saga, entitled “family vids 1,” eclipses even “You can get organic food with welfare“ on our list of all-time favorite Diaz moments captured on film, so we simply had to pass it along in lieu of any news worth writing about. You know, for science.

Despite being less than a minute in length, “family vids 1″ tells us more about the Diaz family than a million hostile interviews ever could. Revelations include:

-The Diaz family is not the real-life cast of The Wire, as previously understood
-Even when surrounded by family, Nick Diaz is paralyzed by social anxiety
-The Diaz’s have a harder time figuring out cameras than they do blenders.
-Nate Diaz *loves* posing for photos.

That last epiphany is easily the most shocking, especially to someone who once asked Nate for a photo at an MMA convention and was told to “take a short walk off a tall building.” Clearly Diaz doesn’t understand physics, because that…would’ve…killed…me…

Nick Diaz Visits the Welfare Office, And It Is Sad [VIDEO]

(Props: NickDiaz209 via r/MMA)

Let’s just clear something up first: Nick Diaz isn’t applying for welfare himself in the above clip, although he does remain retired from fighting and has no passive income to speak of. Nick is simply along for the ride as two of his friends fill out forms for some good ‘ol financial assistance. (One of the friends appears to be Chris Diaz, a knife-packing entourage member who may or may not be related to the skinnier, more successful Diazes.) Though the mood among the three gentlemen remains light, the video is still massively depressing for the following reasons:

- Man, is the Stockton welfare office packed or what?

- As Diaz observes, that little girl is indeed doing “snow angels” on the floor.

- Chris clearly has no intention of supporting himself through honest labor. “They’re gonna ask me for my work number?” he asks. “Come on.” Nick helpfully suggests that he lists “jiu-jitsu bum” as his occupation.

As a brief, unsettling window into Nick’s daily life, this clip ranks up there with Throwing Knives in the Kitchen, Failed Front Flip, and Guy Carrying Large Marijuana Plant. Enjoy, I guess?

So We’re Serious About this War MMA Thing, Huh? Main Event of War MMA 1 Confirmed

(Screen capture of the War MMA website, NickDiazPromotions.com.)

If you assumed that War MMA would never get past the planning stages, then do I have a surprise for you: It looks like Nick Diaz got that temporary promoter’s license, because War MMA 1 is officially set for June 22 from the Stockton Arena and the main card appears set for the inaugural event.

Hell, tickets even went on sale, with ringside (yes, as in a ring not a cage) seats still available as of writing this!

Unsurprisingly, the main event will feature a Team Cesar Gracie fighter – UFC veteran Daniel Roberts (14-4, 3-4 UFC) – fighting against the most formidable local opponent the promotion can find. Via NickDiazPromotions.com:

UFC Fan Pulls Guard, Sinks Guillotine Choke, Saves Family From Carjacker

A Stockton, California, man proved this weekend that watching mixed martial arts does in fact make you a tough guy, and that pulling guard in a street fight can work. Our friends over at News 10 Stockton, have the story.

“Abel Simmons has been a huge fan of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) for years. But never did he imagine that he would be using the moves to defend himself or his family from a carjacking suspect.

Simmons, 29, was able to stop and hold down his attacker until police came.

Simmons says his family was pulling up to their home on E. Jefferson Street Saturday night. They had just returned from watching a UFC fight.

They were in the driveway when a man came up and started pounding on the back window of their SUV. Then, the man tried opening the back door where Simmon’s sons – a newborn and a 2 year old – were sleeping. Fortunately, the door was locked.

Simmons, who was sitting in the passenger seat, jumped out out and tried to stop the man. His wife, who was driving, called 911.”

The alleged car jacker then punched Simmons in the face and that’s when shit got real. Simmons says he changed levels, wrapped his arms around the assailant’s legs, and took him down to the ground.

Massive CSAC Budget Deficit Threatens to Halt MMA Events in California

(CSAC boss George Dodd, everybody. Is it really surprising that a guy who dresses like a blackjack dealer would be responsible for blowing so much money?)

California’s state athletic commission is in big financial trouble and with it, the possibility of future MMA and boxing matches held in the state. At a meeting on Tuesday it was revealed that the CSAC, led by Executive Director George Dodd, is insolvent, and has been spending far more than it is bringing in through event revenue.

The budget officer for California’s Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA), Taylor Schick, released a memo with numbers detailing that if the commission continues on its current path it would face a deficit of nearly $700,000 by the end of 2013’s fiscal year. Such a deficit would force the state to stop putting on athletic events, including MMA and boxing contests, according to DCA director Denise Brown in a letter to Dodd.

“Without the ability to pay for even basic services, the Commission will have no choice but to cease operation immediately and cancel or postpone indefinitely all Commission regulated events,” she wrote.

Holy Sh*t, It’s Really Happening: Diaz vs. St-Pierre Official for UFC 137 in October

UFC president Dana White made an otherwise slow news day into an exciting one that fight fans have been waiting for for a long time with a simple tweet that was succinct and to the point.

“U wanted it! U GOT IT!!!”

What we will get will be a welterweight showdown between UFC champ Georges St-Pierre and Strikeforce champ Nick Diaz at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. Although he didn’t say whether or not both (or any of the two for that matter) titles will be on the line, does it really matter?

Strikeforce Challengers Event in Stockton Revealed to be April Fool’s Day Prank

(“That whole Zuffa thing was just a gag too, right? No? That one was for real? Rats.” Pic: Prommanow)

From a Strikeforce press release

STOCKTON, Calf. — Strikeforce CEO Scot Coker held a press conference here on Friday to announce that tonight’s scheduled Challengers event at the Stockton Arena was just an elaborate April Fool’s Day joke, one that he admitted had gone too far.

Saying the whole idea was “just a goof,” Coker said he was surprised more people didn’t catch on sooner. “Come on, like we’re going to host an event in the most miserable city in the country, headlined by Rodrigo Damm?” Coker said. “Not even Showtime would go for that crap.”

Satoshi Ishii’s Strikeforce Debut Postponed Due to Visa Problems

(“Well, maybe *you* can’t tell the difference between 18k gold and 14k gold…”)

Though he was slated to face Scott Lighty in a featured light-heavyweight matchup at this Friday’s Strikeforce Challengers event at the Stockton Arena in Sad City, Olympic gold-medalist judoka Satoshi Ishii has been forced to withdraw from the fight. Strikeforce announced this morning that due to the recent natural disasters in Japan, Ishii was unable to acquire a visa permitting him to leave his homeland in time for the event. Stepping in for him will be Lorenz Larkin, an undefeated knockout-artist who is currently 9-0 as a pro, following a 7-0 amateur career.

The Stockton Challengers show — headlined by a lightweight meeting between Justin Wilcox and Rodrigo Damm — would have been Ishii’s first MMA appearance in the United States. After losing his MMA debut in a decision to Hidehiko Yoshida on New Year’s Eve 2009, Ishii went 4-0 in 2010, with notable victories over Ikuhisa Minowa and Jerome Le Banner. Maybe when his visa issues are sorted out, a judoka vs. judoka bout between Ishii and fellow Strikeforce light-heavyweight Rhadi Ferguson is in order.

Stockton Really Is “Gangsta, Gangsta,” According to New Report

(More mindless violence in the 209.)

Nick Diaz isn’t joking about how dangerous his hometown of Stockton, California is.  A new report from Forbes (thanks to reader CMH for the find) named Stockton the fifth most dangerous city in the nation. Detroit is currently number one on the list, followed by Memphis, Miami, and Las Vegas.  The weird part is, of all the five most dangerous cities, Stockton is the only one with less than a million people.  We strongly suspect that it drops to ninth place on the most dangerous list when the Diaz brothers leave town for a fight, but could easily claim the top spot if they were to have sons.  Handsome, articulate sons.

CagePotato Comments of the Week: In Which Goog Owned All Your Asses

Nick Diaz Nate Diaz Stockton

This week we saw a CP reader named "Goog" emerge from obscurity to make a seriously strong case for CagePotato Commenter Rookie of the Year. Honestly, it was just win, win, win, and more win with this guy. Here were three of his best moments…

Goog on "Quebec Athletic Commission May Block UFC 97 From Happening in Montreal": It was probably all just a matter of miscommunication, because I don’t think there’s anyone in the world, even Canada, that doesn’t know James Thompson will eventually hit the ground.

Goog on "War Machine Arrested in Vegas": And don’t count him out too long. You know he’ll only be there two days and he’ll say something that gets him thrown out of prison.

Goog on "Stockton, Stand Up! …And Move to Pretty Much Any Other City in the Nation": Maybe it’s so miserable BECAUSE the Diaz brothers are there. If you could get them to leave, you’d probably be looking at the next Boston.

Amazing. We’ll also give a nod to Ouch! That hurts on the aforementioned ‘Stockton sucks’ post, who wrote: Perhaps the Stockton chamber of commerce should stop using their slogan "Don’t be scared, homie"

Anyway, Goog my man, you’re eligible for up to three CagePotato "Hall of Fame" t-shirts. E-mail your real name, address, and shirt size(s) to feedback@cagepotato.com. Same goes for you, Ouch!, except you only get one. Try harder next time.
