Poll: Who Should Jose Aldo Fight Next — Cub Swanson or Conor McGregor?

(Presented without comment.)

It seems Jose Aldo won’t even be given a chance to clean out the cobwebs from his epic war with Chad Mendes last weekend before we start discussing who he will face next. While the crowd vote seems to be swaying in the way of a fast-talking Irishman wid da finest suits money can buy, the MMA media almost unanimously agree that whatever Daddy Dana says is fine Cub Swanson, should he defeat Frankie Edgar at Fight Night 57 next month, would undoubtedly establish himself as the division’s true #1 contender.

Chuck Mindenhall wrote a great piece about the prospect of giving Conor McGregor the next title shot over at MMAFighting, but that was before McGregor was booked to take on Dennis Siver in Boston on January 18th*. Swanson, on the other hand, took to Twitter following Aldo’s victory to ensure fans that he would be given the next title shot “as long as he won his fight against Edgar.”

Unfortunately for Swanson, a verbal agreement for a title shot doesn’t mean sh*t when you’ve got a bonafide star like McGregor waiting in the wings. In his post-scrum interview with Ariel Helwani at UFC 179, Dana White declared that “If everything goes to plan, then we can probably have a fight between [McGregor and Aldo] in the summer.” Not only does this statement directly contradict the title fight Swanson was apparently promised, but it really doesn’t say much for how the UFC feels Siver’s chances are against McGregor either.

It’s a clusterfuck of a situation, basically, but it’s times like these when the voice of *true* reason needs to be heard. We’re talking about the voice of MMA fans so hardcore that they only a follow an uncredentialed blog full of UFC-hating hacks, posers, and h8rs. We’re talking about fans who read a blog that pulls no punches except for when they are forced to by threat of legal action. We’re talking about MMA fans who read a blog that was quoted by The New Yorker and Jezebel this year and not once paused to brag about it. They are called…the Taters.

Join us after the jump to vote in our poll, Taters, lest your humorous insight and spot-on analysis of the featherweight title picture go unheard.

(Jose Aldo vs. Chad Mendes UFC 179 highlights, via UFC on FOX)

In case you missed the action on Saturday night, check out this video recap of the five-round war between Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes at UFC 179 in Rio. Aldo came out of the fight looking worse for the wear, but took four out of five rounds on all three judges scorecards.

Below: Aldo and Mendes are interviewed after the bout, and the champ discusses the late-punches controversy at the end of round 1. Aldo lands a great diss on Conor McGregor — “I’m the king, Chad’s the prince, and now we have a joker” — while Mendes just promises to kick McGregor’s ass.

And speak of the devil…

Cutting Through The Bullsh*t: UFC 179 Edition

By Alex Giardini

UFC 179: “Aldo vs. Mendes 2” proved to be exactly what we expected it to be, and that was a one-fight boxing card with a scintillating main event for the ages. The “greatest featherweight fight in history” was nothing short of amazing, with Jose Aldo defeating Chad Mendes for the second time after knocking out “Money” at UFC 142 almost three years ago. The battle was full of wild punches, eye pokes, a lot of heavy breathing, and at times, flying shit that didn’t land.

With a certain “joker” sitting cageside, let’s examine UFC 179, and why it was great and equally pathetic…

Conor McGregor vs. The Haters: UFC Fan Q&A in Brazil Turns Hostile [VIDEO]

(Any time you need a security detail to do a live interview, you’re gonna have a bad time. / Props: UFC)

Since UFC featherweight Conor McGregor is in Rio this weekend to mean mug at Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes at UFC 179, the promotion decided to book him for a fan Q&A at the Maracanazinho Gymnasium. Yes, the UFC had an Irish superheel do a live show in front of a bunch of Brazilians who hate him, and yes, it was kind of a fiasco.

As Helwani summed it up: “This is like Andy Kaufman in Memphis. They hate him and he’s eating it up…Never experienced something like this. Basically every fan is coming to the mic to tell Conor how much they hate him.” Here are some highlights…

0:44: McGregor tells the crowd that the “Brazilian mamacitas” like his hair.

3:45: “It was your MOTHER.”

4:28: “The next time Jose steps into the Octagon after Saturday night, it will be to face me.” The crowd cheers, then starts chanting something that is either “Aldo” or a death threat.

6:49-7:13: One of the attendees goes on a rant that the translator doesn’t even try to pass along to McGregor, perhaps out of fear. Eventually, he huddles up with McGregor to give him the basic gist of what was said.

8:15: The guy is still talking. Paula Sack attempts to restore order. McGregor never responds to what was said and the next fan steps up to the mic.

Gross Injury of the Day: Alan Patrick Pulls Out of UFC 179 Due to Horrifying Fractured Jaw [UPDATED]

(The “before” picture, via Getty)

Undefeated Brazilian lightweight Alan Patrick has withdrawn from his UFC 179 matchup with Beneil Dariush due to a fractured jaw suffered in training. Patrick sustained the injury last Thursday while sparring at X-Gym in Rio de Janeiro. As he told Sherdog:

I was training and was hit by a knee. I was using a mouthguard, but it hit the bottom of my mouth. I have never been hit by such a knee before. It went right into my chin. Now, I will have to put a titanium plate on my chin. If I wasn’t going to be hit anymore, I wouldn’t have to do it, but as a fighter, I have to be cautious…In about a month, I’ll be able to resume doing cardio, and after another month, I’ll resume with the soft-contact training. I expect to fight in December.”

We have placed a photo of Patrick’s injury after the jump, because honestly, it’s too gross to leave on the homepage. Brace yourself…

Injury Roundup: Jose Aldo Hospitalized With Kidney Stones, Conor McGregor Rumored to Have Busted Hand

(Because fuck it, this video is just *adorable*.)

EVERYONE JUST CALM DOWN, ALRIGHT!! Jose Aldo‘s UFC 179 rematch with Chad Mendes is not — I repeat, is not – in danger of being cancelled. UFC 179 WILL NOT be a repeat of UFC 176 a.k.a “The event that Jose Aldo’s cervical spine injury murdered.” And just because Aldo has said he was fine when he was injured in the past, only to later pull out of a fight because he *wasn’t* actually fine, doesn’t mean he’ll do it again. So just CALM. DOWN.

But yes, several of the UFC’s totally reliable sources have confirmed that Jose Aldo did spend a day laid up in the hospital due to a kidney stone, which he expelled within the day and was released. As Aldo’s coach and manager Andre Pederneiras told Combate:

Aldo has this renal calculi issue since he was 16 years old. After his fight against ‘Korean Zombie,’ he also expelled a stone. Same thing last week. It started with a little pain, he was then hospitalized, took some serum and anti-inflammatory, and then he expelled the stone.

For all you dum-dums out there, “renal calculi” is just doctor speak for a kidney stone. But again, EVERYTHING IS FINE…

OK, NOW WE CAN PANIC!!!!

Jose Aldo Admits That He Shoved Chad Mendes Just to Hype Their Fight [NO DOY]

(“Okay, forget the shoving thing, I’ve got a better way to promote us. Have you ever seen the music videos of this man Weird Al?” / Photo by Leandro Lima)

In a regrettable instance of an MMA fighter breaking kayfabe, UFC featherweight champ Jose Aldo went on record yesterday saying that his unsolicited shove of Chad Mendes earlier this week was only done to hype their fight. I know, I know…ShockedJohnCena.gif.

Here’s what Aldo said to local media (via MMAFighting), following a faceoff with Mendes in Sao Paulo on Wednesday that did not result in shoving:

We were talking to Andre (Pederneiras) in a meeting about how we could improve our fight promotions. It’s part of the show. But I told Andre after (the staredown) that it’s not my style,” Aldo said. “It was not staged, we were talking (trash) to each other and it happened. … We (Aldo and Pederneiras) tried to spice things up, but that’s it…

I’ve never pushed anyone during a staredown before,” he said. “I should behave better. I’m not saying I regret it. We did it, it was good. There was a good thing about it that people are now talking about it, but it’s not who I am. It won’t happen again.”

[VIDEO] Jose Aldo Shoves Chad Mendes at the UFC 179 Media Day

(via MMAFighting.)

In a move nobody could have possibly seen coming (nobody I tells ya!), Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes got a little physical at today’s UFC 179 media day. More specifically, Aldo shoved Mendes after the two exchanged some words (I can’t be certain, but I’m pretty sure Mendes told Aldo he was going to “f*ck him up”). To reiterate: There is absolutely *no way* this was staged or pre-rehearsed, so all you conspiracy theorists can just stuff it.

Seriously though, how hilarious would it be if the UFC regularly started staging confrontations to sell PPV’s? The Jones-Cormier scuffle earned them a spot on Sportscenter and easily a couple hundred (thousand) more PPV buys, so the potential is obviously there. Aldo’s hype and status as a PPV draw is ever-dwindling, so what better opportunity to play up the grudge angle? The format is simple: Have both guys talk some smack on Twitter, get in a controlled scuffle at media day, and I dunno, maybe have Mendes take a steel chair to Aldo’s back at the weigh-ins. I know what you’re thinking…

…and you’re right, but don’t call me Jerry.

THIS JUST IN: Jose Aldo breaks leg, UFC 179 cancelled (not really, but it’ll probably happen soon.)

-J. Jones
