(*sigh* What could’ve been…)
Wanderlei Silva’s sudden withdrawal from his UFC 175 clash with bitter rival Chael Sonnen came as a surprising, if not foreseeable turn of events yesterday. Despite his willingness to throw down with Sonnen on the TUF Brazil 3 set or at a Mr. Olympia event, Wandy has been a bit more trepidatious when it’s come to actually signing on the dotted line, resulting in the grudge match being shuffled between three different cards.
It was originally believed that the reason behind Wanderlei’s removal from UFC 175 was that he simply no-showed for his pre-fight medical exams. However, today brings a few developments that would lead one to the conclusion that Silva never planned on fighting Sonnen in the first place. According to MMAFighting, Silva both failed to apply for a fight license despite being given “ample time,” and when asked to partake in a random drug test at UFC 173 last weekend, flat-out refused to do so.
Of course, when you hear Sonnen’s side of the story, things only get weirder…Read More DIGG THIS

(And just like that, Wandy disappeared in a cloud of smoke, his greatest April Fools prank of all times in the books.)
According to Brazilian outlet Combate, the twice-delayed grudge match between TUF Brazil 3 coaches Wanderlei Silva and Chael Sonnen tentatively scheduled for UFC 175 has finally reached its breaking point. Wanderlei has no-showed for his pre-fight medical exams with NSAC, and somehow, been replaced by Vitor Belfort against Sonnen in the evening’s co-main event:
The card for UFC 175 on Wednesday suffered a decent turn of screenplays. After starring with Chael Sonnen moments of biggest rivalry TUF Brazil 3, Wanderlei Silva ’s out of the fight against the U.S. that would loudmouth in the July 5 event in Las Vegas.
The Combate.com found that his replacement will be none other than Vitor Belfort, who returns to work for the UFC in Las Vegas, after all the controversy involving his name and the use of TRT (Testosterone Replacement Therapy). The fight between Chael Sonnen and Vitor Belfort remains the penultimate event, which will feature two title fights: the weights of female-cocks between Ronda Rousey and Alexis Davis, and the weight-average, between Lyoto Machida and Chris Weidman.
OK, I feel as if something might have been lost in translation there (female-cocks, LOL!).
How Vitor Belfort has suddenly been licensed to fight is anyone’s guess. A month ago to the day, Dana White stated that Belfort “had a lot of work to do” before he would be approved for a license in the wake of the TRT ban, and that the approval process “doesn’t happen just like that.” Further muddling things are the rumors currently running rampant that the fight will be held at 205 lbs yet serve as a #1 contender fight for the middleweight title. Welcome to the wacky world of MMA, ladies and gentlemen.
We will have more on this insane story as it develops.Read More DIGG THIS

The constantly-shifting date of the Chael Sonnen vs. Wanderlei Silva fight has become one of the UFC’s most baffling mysteries. But finally, we have an explanation. UFC president Dana White confirmed to MMAJunkie last night that the bout was bumped back five weeks to UFC 175 because the brawl between Sonnen and Silva on TUF Brazil 3 left the Axe Murderer pretty busted up:
“What happened was Wanderlei got hurt in that fight,” White said following Wednesday’s TUF Nations Finale. “He got double legged on the concrete and he hurt his back. He hurt his hand punching Chael in the head and he got injured.
“He couldn’t fight on time because he got hurt in the fight f—ing coaching a show. I’m done being angry now. I was angry when it happened. It’s just disgusting…
“There’s a bunch of idiots in the media saying, ‘That thing looks contrived,’” White said. [Ed. note: It's nice to see that Dana still reads CagePotato!] “It was far from contrived. That thing was a disgusting display of what shouldn’t happen, and if I was there it would have never happened…Read More DIGG THIS

Remember how we mentioned yesterday that BJJ champion Gabrielle Garcia made a guest-appearance on TUF Brazil 3, sometime before her bust for the testosterone-boosting drug Clomiphene? Well, this is what that moment looked like.
The combination of Gabi’s Tom Hardy-esque physique combined with that hilarious-in-retrospect caption makes this my favorite MMA-related screen-cap of the year, hands down. A new Potato Awards category will have to be created just for this image. I mean got damn, that lady big.
If you think you have a better MMA screen-cap from 2014, please shoot us a link in the comments section.
Update: Crooklyn passes along another Wandy/Gabi screen-cap from TUF Brazil 3, with an even greater caption…Read More DIGG THIS

The infamous “brawl” episode of TUF Brazil 3 finally aired yesterday, giving us a complete picture of what led up to Wanderlei Silva and Chael Sonnen tussling on the gym floor, and it’s honestly one of the funniest moments in TUF history. Silva instigates the situation by punching his palm and repeating the word “soon!” at Sonnen, like a schoolyard bully from a Disney movie. He spits at Sonnen’s feet, and I hate to make insulting comparisons here, but it’s the kind of thing that a llama or ape would do.
Chael remains as a cucumber, though: “How do you feel when you say crazy things like that to me, when I’ve been challenging you for years. You ever feel weird about that?”
At the 0:40 mark, I kid you not, Wanderlei says that Sonnen is going to have a daymare. Goodness, the English language offers so many possibilities for clever turns of phrase. But the best part is when Chael tries to grill Wandy on when exactly they’re going to fight. Of course, Wandy doesn’t have a clear answer for that. Then, Silva does some kind of slapping thing in front of Chael’s face, and the next time Silva closes distance on him, it’s on. Before you know it, Sonnen is on top of Silva, and Andre “Dida” Amade — who is an assistant coach on the show, not a competitor — is slugging Sonnen in the back of the head and ripping his jersey.
And that’s when this whole incident goes from comedy to tragedy. Sonnen called Dida’s behavior “straight-up illegal”, and he might have a point there. Just because you’re sucker-punched on a reality show doesn’t mean that normal assault rules don’t apply. Right? I have no idea, actually; I’ve never been on a Brazilian reality show. But I hear good things.

The mystery of when Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva will actually fight each other — if at all — has taken another twist. The TUF Brazil 3 coaches were first slated to settle their television rivalry at UFC 173 on May 25th in Vegas. Then, it was bumped to a week later in Sao Paulo, Brazil. And now, according to UFC president Dana White, the matchup has been pushed back five more weeks, and will serve as the co-main event of UFC 175: Weidman vs. Machida. Allegedly. Pending any sudden injury announcements.
The latest re-scheduling has caused a ripple effect of fight-reshuffling behind it. Since Chael vs. Wandy had been scheduled to headline the 5/31 Sao Paulo Fight Night card, the new headliner of that event will be Junior Dos Santos vs. Stipe Miocic. And since that fight was slated as the UFC 173 co-headliner, the UFC is scrambling for another fight to support Barao vs. Dillashaw and Lawler vs. Ellenberger. Just let me know when this stuff starts to become a little confusing. I actually keep a cheat-sheet in my pocket to keep it all straight. It’s a little scrap of paper that says “www.wikipedia.com“.
Anyway, we’ll update you when Sonnen vs. Silva is canceled.Read More DIGG THIS

I almost feel bad for the cast of TUF Brazil 3 — whoever they are — because all the squabbling/fake brawling between coaches Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva is stealing so much of the spotlight. Then again, do I care about regional-level Brazilian prospects fighting in a reality-TV tournament? I do not. Do I have any plans to subscribe to Fight Pass to watch this show and others like it? No sir. At all, like ever? No no no.
So here’s something else that happened during filming: Wanderlei Silva demanded an apology for all of the nasty things Chael Sonnen said about Brazilian people in the lead-up to his first fight against Anderson Silva. Sonnen refused. Silva threatened to leave the show if Sonnen didn’t apologize. Sonnen refused some more, and suddenly we were at an impasse. Here’s what Chael had to say afterwards about Silva’s failed power-play:
“He is so stupid, I’m ashamed of him. He is a checkers player. In checkers you play one move at a time. If you are a chess player, you have to guess what I’m going to do and plan your next move, you have to be three or four moves ahead. He is so stupid, and I’m not trying to offend him, stupid is a word for a real thing. He comes and say: ‘the show stops if you don’t apologize for what you said about Brazil’. He did what a real checkers player would do. He would never imagine that I would refuse to apologize. When I refused, all that he could do was give up. He put himself in check, I didn’t do that. The show stopped and was almost over. They had to call Dana White and the producers. I begged him to come back and he didn’t. So he called for a cab and the cab came. One producer had to stop him in the cab and make him come back…Read More DIGG THIS

At this point, you’re probably sick of hearing whether or not Chael Sonnen vs. Wanderlei Silva is actually going to happen. For weeks/possibly months now, the “biggest rivalry in the *history* of MMA” has been booked and shuffled between events, only to be placed on hold due to Silva’s refusal to sign a bout agreement (possibly because he didn’t have his video crew around to angrily vlog about it afterward). Our frustration with Silva has only been matched by Sonnen, who has recently taken to threatening Silva with the release of some incriminating evidence (more incriminating than this?) over Twitter should he not sign the bout agreement by March 31st.
But thank f*cking God, Sonnen vs. Silva is finally a go. Probably. That’s according to MMAFighting, at least, who was the first to pass along word that the TUF Brazil 3 coaches have finally agreed to do battle in Sao Paulo, Brazil on May 31st at an unnumbered “Fight Night” event.
The announcement was made by UFC officials on Sunday night. While there are a few members of the MMA media claiming that Wanderlei has still yet to sign on the dotted line (it wouldn’t be the first time that the UFC has put the cart before the horse if this turned out to be true), the “Fight Night” card is already starting to fill up with supporting fights…Read More DIGG THIS

In the lead-up to the third season of TUF Brazil, there were several audacious claims being made that Chael Sonnen vs. Wanderlei Silva is “the greatest rivalry in the history of mixed martial arts.” A rivalry isn’t truly great until it involves a Twitter war, a reality show, and a (possibly staged) on-set brawl on said reality show, is essentially what we’re being told. (Author’s note: In which case, allow me to cast my vote for TUF Japan: Sakuraba vs. Gracie.)
Being that Sonnen vs. Silva ranks second only to King Kong vs. Godzilla on the list of mythologized rivalries, you’d think that both sides would have signed the bout agreement for their May 31st showdown by now. If anything, you’d think that Sonnen would be the one hesitant to agree to anything in the wake of the TRT ban.
In either case, you’d be wrong, dummy. According to Dana White, it’s actually Wandy who has yet to sign on the dotted line (via MMAFighting):
“Yeah,” White affirmed when asked on Thursday if the fight still has yet to be signed. “There’s a lot more to that story than (I can say).
“He’s not balking,” White said of Silva. “Not even a little bit. It’s not over money either. I can’t tell you. It has to do with the show (TUF Brazil 3). It has to do with the show, that’s all I can tell you.”Read More DIGG THIS
