Takanori Gomi vs. George Sotiropoulos Added to UFC 144 in Japan

(Gomi Head approves of this matchup. Props: Dallas Winston.)

Takanori Gomi‘s run in the UFC has resulted in an underwhelming 1-3 record, marked by submission losses to Kenny Florian, Clay Guida, and Nate Diaz. But it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the UFC is giving the Fireball Kid one more try in front of his home country’s fans — or at least the ones who will be dragging ass to the Saitama Super Arena early enough to catch the prelims.

The UFC has confirmed that Gomi will return at UFC 144 on February 26th, against Aussie grappling specialist George Sotiropoulos, who’s also had a rough go of it lately. After going 7-0 in the Octagon following his stint on TUF 6, Sotiropoulos is now riding back-to-back losses against Dennis Siver and Rafael Dos Anjos. In other words, jobs could be on the line here.

Gomi vs. GSots brings the UFC 144 card up to 12 star-studded fights, including the lightweight title headliner between Frankie Edgar and Ben Henderson, and bouts featuring Quinton Jackson, Cheick Kongo, Jake Shields, Joe Lauzon, and Yushin Okami. Check out the current lineup after the jump, before injuries blow it all to hell.

Frankie Edgar vs. Ben Henderson (for lightweight championship)
Quinton Jackson vs. Ryan Bader (LHW)
Cheick Kongo vs. Mark Hunt (HW)
Yoshihiro Akiyama vs. Jake Shields (WW)
Anthony Pettis vs. Joe Lauzon (LW)

Yushin Okami vs. Tim Boetsch (MW)
Riki Fukuda vs. Steve Cantwell (MW)
Norifumi Yamamoto vs. Vaughan Lee (BW)
Takeya Mizugaki vs. Chris Cariaso (BW)
Takanori Gomi vs. George Sotiropoulos (LW)
Hatsu Hioki vs. Bart Palaszewski (FW)
Tiequan Zhang vs. Leonard Garcia (FW)

Cryptic is it, signed X (wink)

I think your right about George. My guess if he wins, its the beginning of a new mental for him, and a new series of "WINS" for his future record.
Thanks for answer, for second best MMA promotion.

Interesting to see how there's only one Japanese fighter in the main card. Okami in the preliminary card is border line insane.

^ Yeah still no word on who they are sending down here or if we are even getting an event this year, WTF UFC? Also George should take this but he did have touble getting Siver to the mat and Gomi has decent wrestling, if George can't get the takedown he could be in trouble.

@Xeno Ha ha. Yes, the Japanese lose all power when they enter the cage and when they get behind the wheel of a car FACT.

@Iskander Neptu
Quick quesiton. After have two guesses.
Is Iskander Arabic for Alexander?
or is it a reference to the 9K720 Iskander (NATO reporting name SS-26 Stone) which is a mobile theater ballistic missile system produced and deployed by Russia?
Also, Neptu....I'm at a loss after a few guesses.

The only jap fighter worth watching is Aoki. Get him in the cage Dana!
Iskander Neptu- November 28, 2011 at 9:18 am
These fights are as random as they come, apart from the title. U can't build much of a narrative on any of them. Kongo v Hunt?? Why are they doing Cup Cheick favors? he's a dirty-fighting-gate-keeper. Screw'm.
Gomi v G-sot has submission written all over it. Goodbye Flameout Kid, haha!

@Dog Dicks Magoo
Got to agree 100%. The Nipponese don't impress me! GRIN
Too saddled in the native tradition of martial arts, and they all need to step it up.
Problems is how does one take another man seriously when he shows up to the fight with his Pokemon card collection. The Japanese just don't exclude "tuff" when they wear pink and purple, take snapshots with fuzzy cartoon characters, and slurp the noodle.
After too consecutive loses to Siver and dos Anjos, Jorge takes this, and saves his own ass.
If he happens to get outclassed in front of Gomi's own people - can anyone tell me the next best promotion to go after getting the boot from the UFC?
Cup Cheick- November 28, 2011 at 7:42 am
I don't think they are trying to get rid of him. If he can't compete he can't compete..unless they create some sort of legend division where old fighters who refuse to adapt but we still love can go at it old rules.
Dog Dicks Magoo- November 28, 2011 at 7:20 am
Huge Gomi fan here but it's almost like the UFC wants to get rid of him. He will get wrestle fucked as usual. Gomi refuses to evolve and he's lazy by todays fighters standards *grabs cheetos and takes sip of mountain dew*
RoJoegan- November 28, 2011 at 7:17 am
This card is getting crazier and crazier—G-Sots gonna overpower and out grapple Gomi to a first-round submission win.
