Technique of the Day: Pat Barry Demonstrates the Left High-Kick Trick On Matt Mitrione

Whether you’re an MMA fighter or a guy (or a girl) who likes to settle your differences behind the Dairy Queen, you really need to add this cool little technique from Pat Barry to your bag of tricks.

Basically, you flip the script on the traditional kickboxing combinations that see you end with a kick from the opposite leg of the last punch you throw and follow up a purposely missed left hook with a left high kick. Easier said than done, right?

Not if you follow Barry’s instructions and practice the sequence a few times. After about ten minutes I was throwing headkicks like it was 2003 and I was CroCop and the heavybag was Igor Vovchanchyn.

As Pat so eloquently puts it, “You need to get the rabbit to duck in its hole and once it thinks it’s safe, it’s gonna get sniped by a left high kick.” Check out how interested “Meathead” is in his description of the trick.

We couldn’t find any instances of Pat using this nifty little trick, but here’s a painful clip of his first three fights:

An even better way to make a rabbit come out of his hole is to let said rabbit nearly beat you to death twice within a minute and then throw an overhand right/ uppercut combo when he comes charging in for the kill.

Don't try this on the street, you may end up waking in the arms of concerned friends. Ending a punch combo with a strike to the leg is must safer and limiits the power in counter striking from the opponent, Mitrione could have come with a straight shot down the pipe after Barry's weak left hook.
