The 10 Most Absurd Entries in the UFC’s New Fighter Rankings

(I had no idea what to use for the featured image on this post, so I Googled “puppy taking a shit,” and found this. It fits surprisingly well, I think.)

Last week, we learned that the UFC and FightMetric were organizing a new set of official fighter-rankings, which would be updated often and made available to the public. It was a good idea in theory — for one thing, the rankings would be a helpful reference tool for casual fans trying to keep the rosters straight — but it suffered from two fatal flaws: 1) The rankings would have zero impact on which fights actually get booked, as we were once again reminded today, and 2) If the ranking body is only made up of media members who are on good terms with the UFC, as well as reporters who don’t automatically recognize this exercise as a conflict of interest, the results will inevitably be biased.

The debut rankings list came out today, featuring the opinions of 28 media members, including longtime shills (Franklin McNeil), obscure non-entities (“Burbank Leader”?), and left-field surprises. (Andreas Hale, good to see you my man!) Yeah, I know this sounds like sour grapes from a blacklisted media refugee, but after scanning through the new rankings lists, it’s clear that this thing is as useless as you probably imagined. Here are some notable lowlights…

1. Despite his 0-0 record in the UFC, Gilbert Melendez is listed as the #1 lightweight contender. You know, because he’ll be fighting for the title soon.

2. Other 0-0 fighters on the rankings list: Tarec Saffiedine (#10 welterweight), Luke Rockhold (#7 middleweight), and Gegard Mousasi (#10 light-heavyweight).

3. After losing his featherweight debut against Jose Aldo, Frankie Edgar is now the 4th-ranked featherweight contender in the UFC.

4. In a related story, Edgar is #9 on the pound-for-pound list — right between Demetrious Johnson and Dan Henderson — despite being on a three-fight losing skid.

5.Steve Cofield, Mark Daniels, Marc Raimondi & John Silver all ranked Chael Sonnen as a top 10 LHW. Sonnen hasn’t fought at LHW in 7+ years.” Sonnen’s name doesn’t appear on the consensus light-heavyweight list, or the middleweight list, which is just as strange.

6. A dude named Anthony Springer Jr. had Roy Nelson and Pat Barry listed as the UFC’s #3- and #4-ranked heavyweight contenders — based on accomplishments, not personality — and ranked Brian Bowles as the #3 bantamweight, directly over Urijah Faber. Also, Daniel Cormier was in his Top 10 P4P list, but wasn’t included in his heavyweight rankings. This is the caliber of MMA-pundit that they’re relying on, guys.

7. Nick Diaz is ranked above Rory MacDonald on the welterweight list, which is kind of ludicrous if we’re considering their actual recent accomplishments in the welterweight division.

8. Since the UFC only has three fighters in its women’s bantamweight division, a rankings list for that division doesn’t exist.

9. Speaking of weak divisions, the flyweight ranking list has two fighters who sport 0-1 records in the UFC — #10-ranked Ulysses Gomez, and Jussier Da Silva, who managed to place all the way at #5.

10. Ian McCall is winless at flyweight in the UFC. He’s still ranked as the #3 contender, right above John Moraga (2-0).

And there you have it, folks — the difference between rankings and “rankings.” If anything else on the list upsets you, let us know in the comments section.

The next move for UFC to be recognized as a legitimate sporting event and not more comparable to WWE: Use FightMetric + Polls to determine who fights who.

No other sport in the world do you earn a spot in a championship game by losing your last one.

Rory beat the hell out of Condit except for about 2 minutes in the 3rd.. and Diaz is on a 0 fight win streak. Can't tell if trolling or just doesn't watch fights.

Wrinkled ring king rankings rankle rank hack ranks.
ThugNutzz- February 5, 2013 at 5:56 pm
Why the fuck is Bisping ranked #3 the best guy that he has beat is Stann who is not in the top 10, fuck they have marketed and padded out his career well to the point where they have convinced journalists he is a top level guy. Boetch is ranked #10 though despite beating 2 guys in the top 10 in Okami and Lombard, if only boetch got to face belfort and lose then maybe he would be ranked #3 because I guess it's who you lose to not who you beat, they should give Kalib Starnes a shot at Anderson then after he get's destroyed rank him in the top 5 because he did face a high level guy.

Why isn't Chael P. Sonnen listed in his rightful place at the top of every division? Because reporters couldn't find their ass with both hands, a flashlight, and a GPS, that's why. Ask anyone on the mean streets of West Linn, Oregon to vote on the rankings, and the people will tell you who the true champion of every division is, even in the ones he's never even bothered to compete.

Hey asshole rory broke bjs rib and he beat condit till the end. And when he meets him again in montreal....well i suggest u dont watch.
Nippletwist- February 5, 2013 at 4:46 pm
whaat? rory macdonald is so unproven. he has barely fought anyone. he got smashed against condit. his most impressive victory is bj penn, who is a lightweight. and nick diaz also destroyed bj penn in much more devastating fashion. and nick diaz had a much better fight with condit. and diaz is on a huge winning streak, and hes the top contender. diaz is top 5 welterweight. macdonald might not even be top ten, hes young and unproven, i understand the hype, but he doesn't have the credentials of diaz yet.

Those "rankings" are bullshitty. That's was probably the worst list ever made. That is until you guys dcided to make this list detailing they're obvious failure. Good job pointing out this deficiency in mma today though gotta give ya that.
The12ozCurls- February 5, 2013 at 12:57 pm
Either I am a complete moron (which is probably mostly true) or the UFC site has taken down the ranking list. Every link to the UFC rankings within this post directs me to a UFC web page that says "coming in February" - Conspiracy theorists begin your banter.

Deadpanda- February 5, 2013 at 12:48 pm
Is amateur statistical analysis really this fucking hard? Stick to the numbers prople! Opinions will always stink, they're always full of shit & they're always better than everyone else's opinion... just like your asshole.

UFC should stick with fightmetric stats & winning records for their rankings. Adding 'reporters' to the mix only provides more opportunity for a human element to corrupt raw data.

No Cheik Kongo? UFC JayT ain't gonna be happy about this..

Roy Nelson and Pat Barry at 3 and 4? This is like that time Sodak was insisting that Aleksander Emelianenko was a top 10 heavyweight in 2012.

Again: the other Emelianenko brother. Top 10 Heavyweight. 2012.

Oh Sodie, you so crazy.
Deadpanda- February 5, 2013 at 12:51 pm
Yeah I instantly thought 'Did Sodak contribute to this list,' when I saw it. But we know he wasn't actually involved because Mousasi wasn't ranked #1 in every division.

#FREECAGEPOTATO to unfuck this nonsense list.
mania112- February 5, 2013 at 12:21 pm
This article is clearly written by someone butt-hurt he wasn't picked to submit rankings.

Hey, genius - let's see who you rank where.

El Guapo- February 5, 2013 at 12:44 pm
I can assure you his butt no longer feels pain..
The12ozCurls- February 5, 2013 at 1:20 pm
But he does in fact want to get a face to face meeting with Cpt. SwingDick . . . . so there is still a chance of potential butt pain if said meeting ever happens.

My biggest problem with the rankings is that even though it's completely meaningless, the writers involved still treated it like it actually matters.

Other problems I had with it:

1.) Frankenberry, Blue Demon Jr, and my alter-ego, Spidermang, received zero votes in the heavyweight rankings.

2.) For that matter, how has Shane Carwin not fought in forever, yet still be considered a Top 10 heavyweight?

3.) No one cares about little flyweights.

4.) Hector Lombard crushes Failhares, and gets ranked higher for doing so than the guy who kicked his ass in his UFC debut.

5.) What the actual fuck is the Asbury Park Press? Bam Bam Bigelow's signature move has its own newspaper now?
Onan- February 5, 2013 at 12:29 pm
Upranked for #5 alone. Well done.
Hutch- February 5, 2013 at 12:13 pm
How the hell is Renan Barao not this list?
