The 15 Most Questionable Decisions Made by UFC President Dana White

(#16: Whatever the hell this is.)

By Brian Lopez-Benchimol

There’s no denying the effect that UFC President Dana White has had on the world of mixed martial arts. Though it was no singlehanded effort, White has overseen the organization’s rise thanks to the strength of his fighters and partners in Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta.

However, looking back at his historic career, there are some confusing and questionable details that remain as stains in his otherwise successful tenure as President.

From verbal gaffes to questionable signings and regrettable firings, has the list right here. If you think they missed any, let us know in the comments section…

@ XENO, I'm critical but I do love it here at CP and they deserve their props for the majority of their work, you sir are a bonus.

I don't know if I share the same about Coleman, he is stone cold, but his age shows after the first round. If he was used as a plug for FREE fights, that would work for me....but not for the $50 bucks. The same holds true for Tito....and I would like to see Coleman have a shot at fucking up Tito.
As I understood Pride, it was riddled with corruption much like the other promotions - yet from what I know about Japan, this corruption was without a doubt tied to the Yakuza.
As for the Diaz debacle, I firmly believe that Dana was well aware of the GSP injury long before he made the switch by dumping Condit to step child status, and bringing in the mismatched BJ Penn.

@Todd M
Damit TM. I read your first post and had to agree - call an ace an ace, and a spade a spade.
Then I read your second post, and blushed.

Come on brah, cagepotato is a great MMA-site. I love how it doesn't take everything so damned seriously. Somebody described it as snarky, and that's quite accurate :D
Shifty-Eyed Dog- November 23, 2011 at 8:26 am
Oh yeah, I forgot about the Nick Diaz sidelining thing...

BEST decision DW ever made. I only wish he would have also made Nick wait until after the Condit fight to try again. Nick is an unprofessional punk who got what he deserved. I wish they would just cut his ass altogether.

^ LOL, I wouldn't go that far. This site still rocks, I enjoy lots of the articles, I just don't like The Bleacher Report, we have a much more sophisticated humour over here at CP and we have XENO, I'm not going anywhere. :)
NorthSouthDudesOnly- November 22, 2011 at 9:02 pm
This is a new low for CP. You guys must be incredibly desperate for money if this is the only way you can think of to get some page views.
I guess the site is basically done. At least have the pride to go away on your own terms instead of continuing this feeble, withering decay.

Fun read, but the list is fail since "Firing Akihiro Gono" was not on it.

15) Heh
14) Okay, that's legit funny
13) Um, I don't know, as a one-time freakshow fight thing I didn't think it was a problem, and it gave Couture a win. Not that I'm eager to see a repeat.
12) I have zero problem with Coleman coming back and taking a few fights. Even if he wasn't Top 15, he was still able to compete at a very high level so I have no trouble with him cashing a few paychecks here.
11) Yeah, re-signing Baroni was questionable, although ultimately pretty minor, considering they used him as undercard fodder for prospects.
10) I don't see what the big deal is here. Dana White gave Parisyan one final chance, and Parisyan did show up to the fight and promptly got his ass kicked in a dark match, prompting him to get cut again. It's not like Dana was relying on him for PPV buys that time, he was in a dark match.
9) Ortiz has been a useful stepping stone for a number of different fighters, saved a main-event that was on the verge of collapsing, and had an incredible comeback when he choked out Ryan Bader. Tito's re-signing has made the company money and done nothing to harm them as far as I can tell.
8) Yeah, this was awful. Odd only Fitch is mentioned. I would say Dana White cutting all of AKA in a tantrum after they refused to sign over lifetime likeness rights for video games for no compensation whatsoever is in the Top 3 for sure.
7) This is a really tough call, considering Pride still had no television deal in the Japanese market, without which it was basically a money pit. I might defer to someone who knows more about the specifics but it's hard to blame Dana here.
6) Yeah, I'm not really fond of what they've done with Strikeforce, better matchmaking aside. They should have done one of three things: folded the promotion and taken everyone worth taking (a bit over 40 guys still last I checked); taken everyone worth taking and leaving it around as a feeder org w/ WMMA; just leaving it as is with the occasional lateral move for a dudes at the end of contracts who _aren't_ champions. Picking off the four most marketable champions and Cung Le is kind of neutering it just kind of making a mockery of it.
5) Wrong list. This is one of the better things they've ever done. Shelby is world's better.
4) Uh I guess I'll take BR's word for this one. This would fit better on a list of 15 Stupid Things Dana White Has Done In No Particular Order. If bad music choices on a B-show was really the 4th worst decision Dana White has ever made then he'd be some sort of promoter-savant super-genius.
3) Uh, no? Has BR seen some of the other buyrates this year? This is not that bad a number (better than the 8 out of first 13 PPVs so far this year in fact), and putting Faber in a main-event is great for a burgeoning division. It did a lot better than either of Frankie Edgar's last two PPVs, and I don't see his name on this list.
2) Yeah that was mistake. I can't blame Dana for giving it a shot though. He even quipped at the post-fight press conference that "yeah, [the fans] blew it." Kind of a petty choice.
1) Er... Diaz got punished for being an irresponsible manchild. He didn't get fired, and he didn't leave the title mix. This seemed like an entirely appropriate decision. And if you're only looking in hindsight as far as what it did for the company, it actually helped them when GSP got injured. I don't see how this was a bad decision either way.

So yeah, this list was fun to read but pretty dumb.

There are like two or three indisputably legitimate entries here. The rest is things that are either minor shit, comedy entries, or things that are either questionable or actually good moves.
Todd M- November 22, 2011 at 8:13 pm
Fucking amateur hour, Dana didn't shut down Pride Japan shut down Pride, be it their Television Networks or their questionable, finger missing overlords. Oh he cut Jon Fitch? for about 24 hours untill they came to an agreement, He pulled talent from Strikeforce to the UFC, Uh Yeah he is the Pres of The UFC not Strikeforce. Firing Rich Who? Quote 'Rich Chou, the Strikeforce matchmaker, had helped put together many memorable matches inside the Hexagon, including the talent-loaded December 2010 event which saw Dan Henderson defeat Renato Sobral, Robbie Lawler besting a former UFC title challenger and Paul Daley making an emphatic debut against the hard hitting Scott Smith—all ending by knockout.' Is there any one who didn't pick all 3 winners of those matchups ending it by KO? Hey Brett Rogers put in a solid round against Fedor befor getting KTFO'd, lets see what he can do against The Reem. Jesus Fucking Christ never link to a Bleacher Report article again, ever heard the term guilty by association?
doowm- November 22, 2011 at 5:58 pm
bleacher report sucks balls! who wants to have to change pages every time? cagepotato........take lessons from the comments about bleacher report.
Lesson 1: Never link another article to the shitstain website cause every one on here hates it!
Lesson 2: Don't repeat the same dumb fuckin shit they spew because that makes this site even fuckin shitteier than the site the shit orginated from in the first place creating a shit storm of unimaginable proportions!
Lesson 3: Never make us change pages to view "the next photo"!
That is all.
Karmaatemycat's a bitch for not replying. We know you've been back and seen the comments Karma, be a man and act tough over the internet for gods sake!
KrmtDfrog- November 22, 2011 at 5:40 pm
bleacher report.
Shifty-Eyed Dog- November 22, 2011 at 4:59 pm
First of all, I fucking HATE "slideshow" articles!!! Just give us the whole list on one, maybe two pages!!!

Plus most of that list was just wrong. Sure Toney, and the re-signings type stuff I agree were bad decisions, but Shutting down Pride? GOOD move. Stripping Strikeforce? GOOD move. Faber/Cruz headline? GOOD move. ...and the list goes on and on.
djp1988- November 22, 2011 at 2:43 pm
Dana "White" indeed.
J-Dog- November 22, 2011 at 2:27 pm
Putting only one fight on their big FOX premiere was a major mistake.

I agree that article pretty much sucked.
myklhoey- November 22, 2011 at 1:56 pm

My spidey sense is telling me that everyone is not a fan of Bleacher Report.
XENOPHON- November 22, 2011 at 1:28 pm
So Dana White prefers to beating off other me, and kisses Mexican men named Pepetio, then believing that a washed up boxer could learn the MMA game in 3 months (whom he respects), and asks the boxers team if they can have a phone call to make the freak fight work...and
OK, I stopped watching and closed the tab after the 3rd bit of non-sense.
Viva Hate- November 22, 2011 at 1:24 pm
My spidey sense is telling me that J3T is not a fan of Karma.
Fried Taco- November 22, 2011 at 1:22 pm
Karma could just use all the shit you give him, J3t!!
Yazloz18- November 22, 2011 at 1:21 pm
Lets just skip the bag and shit directly onto the porch
Motivated Penn- November 22, 2011 at 1:18 pm
Bleacher Report is shit. Every single goddamned article is a desperate page hit milking.
J3t- November 22, 2011 at 1:13 pm
You're forgetting that someone would have to buy a paper bag for you first Karma. Can you even afford enough food to produce shit?
KarmaAteMyCat- November 22, 2011 at 12:49 pm
I Concur lets all take shits in paper bags light them Onfire and leave them at the doorstep of the bleacher report!
Iskander Neptu- November 22, 2011 at 12:40 pm
Bleacher report sucks ass. At every sport, not just mma. Don't pollute the Spud with their POS "writing" please.
ccman- November 22, 2011 at 12:29 pm
Agreed, the list was horrible and second guessing at best. Chou made fights he knew would end badly. Much as we want ko's a full card of them actually says mismatches. Only one I halfway agree with was fans picking fotn.
