Thiago Alves’s Brain Surgery Video-Blog Thankfully Avoids the Gory Parts

(Props: ATTMain)

When we first came across this clip, we immediately got bad flashbacks to Miguel Torres‘s reconstructive forehead surgery video, expecting basically the same thing but with exposed brain. Don’t worry, you’re not going to see the actual procedure here. It’s just Thiago Alves heading to the hospital on Wednesday, clearly a little nervous, and waking up later completely lucid and with no obvious signs that his skull was removed while the doctors fixed whatever was wrong with him. Actually, this Sherdog report informs us that the procedure was done to mend a malformation in the left hemisphere of his brain, and they basically went in through his groin. [Ed. note: *barfs*] Said ATT coach Ricardo Liborio: "He is really excited to get back to training and I think it is going to be hard to keep him from trying to get back too fast."

Ok boys n gents..

Thing that I have deduced from this entire situation is this.

Thiago essentially had an Aneurysm ( un-ruptured obviously )- So they used a superfine platinum wire to fill this bulge in the blood vessel up...and that pretty much takes care of it permanently...

They have to go in through the femoral artery to perform the Coil Embolization. It is not going through his cock or balls...

He is lucky indeed... as you do not have to get hit in the head to rupture an aneurysm and or have it cause any major trouble... He could of been the first MMA death in the ring though... and now he has a tiny tiny little ball of platinum in his brain.

Thanks for the clarification.

That sounds just as horrible as I had imagined it.

its called a cerebral angiogram where the vessels of the brain is viewed to check any abnormalities in its formation.
its just how the blood vessels (or venous/arterial system) are mapped out....the femoral/groin veins as well as your radial (wrist) blood vessels are big and connects to the major vessels to the brain and heart. after the catheter is inserted through the groin/wrist and positioned up to the brain, dye is injected and high resolution images are taken just like an x ray. this approach is also used for the vessels of your heart (called cardiac catheterization or cardiac angiogram.)

Is that a misprint?

They went through his groin to get to his brain?!!

Like Kim Couture?

I'm still having a hard time picturing them doing something in his brain by sticking a camera through his groin :O

Now please, swallow a knife.
Nut Puncher 9000- April 2, 2010 at 9:57 am
IT IS IRONIC...dont you think?
ReX13- April 2, 2010 at 9:07 am
...which makes your name more ironic than that song by that chick.
Nut Puncher 9000- April 2, 2010 at 9:04 am
I can handle pictures of nasty cuts, videos of exposed skulls, and even pics/vids of exposed brain all without a problem. The mere mention that it was done through the groin makes me curl up in the fetal position and cry.

According to TMZ Sports (shut up, i know) Alves' first words after coming to were "When can i start training?". I love this guy.

When performing brain surgery why not take the scenic route.
ReX13- April 2, 2010 at 8:39 am

from wiki: Typically the femoral artery can be used as an access artery due to its ease of access as compared to most major arteries. It can be catheterized to gain access to the heart, and the implantation of stents in the coronary arteries. Additionally it can be used to access the vasculature of the brain via the carotid or vertebral arteries. Access to the cerebral vessels via catheterization of the femoral artery is common in interventional neuroradiology procedures.

So basically, they take a left turn at Albuquerque and go around the heart.

Jimbo>> Yeah, he's impossible to mistake for someone else. He was talking about his recent health issues, which resulted in having a heart valve replaced (with a cow's heart valve, no less). He mentioned having an angiogram, and how they went in through the femoral artery in his crotch, because....
J-Dog- April 2, 2010 at 8:32 am
Oooohh... he had problems with THAT head.
Dubbayoo- April 2, 2010 at 8:31 am
I wonder if he eats pepperoni pizza and Diet Coke during his training camps too.
CAP10- April 2, 2010 at 8:31 am
OK, I'm not a doctor, but I don't fathom how it makes sense to do brain surgery through the groin. You'd have to go all the way through the heart to get up there, wouldn't you? Couldn't just just go in the neck and kind of skip the journey through the whole torso? It's like the scene in Hot Shots where the guy says he has to get eye surgery performed through the rectum. Anybody here who knows something about brain surgery want to comment one why this makes sense?
jimbonics- April 2, 2010 at 8:27 am
Aw he did? In reference to what? You know.. I was in the other room and heard him rambling to Jon Stewart... I couldn't keep up with a thing he said. I was just like.. "Yep.. that sounds like Robin Williams going off all right."
ReX13- April 2, 2010 at 8:20 am
Jimbo>> unable to give you points, since Robin Williams made this joke Monday night on the Daily Show. BUT--you're in good company.
CAP10- April 2, 2010 at 8:17 am
Shirtless here, but that's OK as the thought of making MMA fans' miserable lives slightly better with questionable humor keeps my torso warm.
jimbonics- April 2, 2010 at 8:03 am
Because, as we all know, the groin is the shortest path to a man's brain.
ReX13- April 2, 2010 at 8:03 am
Agreed. Glad to hear no permanent sideline for Alves.

That said, i hope the guy that made the "hit him with your brain" comment gets a shirt.
Viva Hate- April 2, 2010 at 7:32 am
Very good to read that Alves is recovering good and is excited to get back to training, an even more motivated Alves is great for the UFC. Cannot wait to see him back.
