UPDATE: A clip of Silva playing Vera like a bongo has been added to the end of this post…check it out while it lasts.
The third round of Thiago Silva vs. Brandon Vera at UFC 125 represented one of the most humiliating beat-downs in recent MMA history, as Silva seemingly got tired of punching Vera about midway through the round and just started slapping him in the face until the fight was over. With Vera’s job likely on the line that night, it was the worst possible final impression to leave with his bosses — as if that mangled schnozz wasn’t enough.
After the fight, top light-heavyweight contender Jon Jones fired up Twitter and posted the following: "Wow that slapping was so disrespectful.. id love to give him a slap in the face…Dominating someone in a fight is 1 thing, looking to simply humiliate them is another..Traditional martial artist always seemed to show honor and respect.. Anyways what’s done is done, I’m headed to the gym to make sure nothing like that ever happens to me."
We say: Eff the haters, Thiago. You’ve just joined a very select group of MMA fighters who have demonstrated their dominance through slapping and spanking. The other members of the MMA Bitch-Slap Hall of Fame are after the jump…
(Fabricio Werdum nearly slaps Andrei Arlovski‘s beard off at UFC 70.)
(Kazushi Sakuraba teahches Ryan Gracie a lesson at PRIDE 12. Saku also developed the double-slap technique that Thiago Silva briefly used on Saturday.)
(Antonio Inoki slaps the piss out of Lyoto Machida after the Dragon’s pro debut in 2003. As the story goes, it’s Inoki’s way of saying "congratulations," but Machida had no idea it was going to happen.)
(Randy Couture takes a page out of Sakuraba’s book and disciplines Tito Ortiz at UFC 44.)
(Bas Rutten lands the loudest backhand in Pancrase history against Frank Shamrock. Later, Shamrock pays him back, though in a laughably pussy sort of way.)
(And the moment you’ve all been waiting for…)

commentsHey Jones you really need to worry about Ryan Bader knocking your goofy head off your shoulders and stop worrying so much about fighters who would whip your ass anyways, so don't talk shit you can't back up young man.
I am no fan of Jones, he either doesn't know the rules, he can't control himself from being a cheapshot artist, OR he just doesn't give a damn.
Either way Jones need to do something before he can talk about what his betters are doing.
Where did this come from? Any examples to back it up???
Seriously, dude has mad respect, gives out beatings and took his KO loss well, fought with a blown out back against Rashad and did not pull a Tito post fight.
He beat alexander who was jumping around mean mugging after he Ko'd Jardine and just walked towards the camera to salute his fans.
He Ko'd Jardine and pointed down at him(pointed did not Hendo or Jeremy Stephens his ass) and walked away, after all that smiling and taunting from Jardine.
Silva does not insult fans, does not insult fighters(simply says he will try to beat their ass like everyone else) and when he is in the Octagon obviously knows what he's there for and acts like it.
I don't see where Silva is this big villian, sure he grew up in the shitter and probably saw some shit, but he's in the U.S. now with his wife trying to make a better life for himself.
nah
This means he has something to build on after he heals up, it was nice to see him let loose with some strikes, if he could have stopped takedowns or got up after being taken down he may have had a better chance against Silva.
Bottomline, Vera needs to work of takedown defense and grappling in general, Silva took a page out of Randy's book with not only the slap to the ass, but also with the "couturesque" under hook against the cage control.
My biggest problem with Vera for a while now, besides the banana hammock at the weigh ins vs. Jones, was that he stopped trying to utilize his striking in his fights and did not take any risks standing with his opponent, but he seemed to try against Silva, eventhough he lost, to me that's a big win for Vera and at least something he can take away from this fight....
