Tito Ortiz Discusses Back Agony, Recent Surgery

Via MMA Weekly:

Since the Randy Couture fight, I have had lower back problems. Each fight it got worse. I have made it though the last eight fights by physical therapy, methylprednisolone pills, and spinal injections for last three fights.

I fought injured time and time again for the fans. After the Rashad (Evans) fight, I told the fight doctor I was having excruciating back pain. It was so bad that my security had to carry me from the Octagon to my dressing room to the press conference and back.

This continued for the next four months. If anyone has had back pain, you know the pain I deal with. It got to be so bad that I was barely able to get up off the couch or drive for longer than 20 minutes.

Now try to imagine training for eight hours a day and having to fight formidable opponents like Rashad, and (Lyoto) Machida. From November of 2007 to May of 2008, I did two separate injections and worked my ass off in physical therapy so I was able to fight Machida.

During the second round of the fight I felt the same pain as I did in the Rashad fight. After the fight, I told the fight doctor I was having back pain. It never got better. I didn’t want to fall into the terrible life of having to take painkillers in order to be capable of making it through training.

I simply refuse to fall into that trap. I started to look into other ways to help my back pain. I have done everything from rehab to injections to make it better and nothing has succeeded…

The kicker to this whole story is that the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) denied my claim for coverage of my debilitating back injury OBVIOUSLY acquired in the Octagon. This was the last kick in the gut made by the UFC.

After all of the battling, and allegiance I pledged to them, they now have stooped so low as to not give me the medical care I so desperately needed. I am not surprised at their last effort to hurt me, so I took it upon myself to get surgery in hopes that my fight career will jump back on track and I will be back to the explosive monster I always have been.

On Oct. 6, 2008, my extensive back surgery was performed in Las Vegas by Dr. [William] Smith. It lasted three hours due to the doctor’s careful hand and my densely muscled core that had to be separated in order to get to my spine. My doctor was impressed with my quick recovery, and an hour after surgery I was on my feet and walking to the car.

This is now the beginning of a new era. There will never be a question again about where my heart lies… and that is with my fans…

Mark my words… the best is yet to come.

During the broadcast of “Heat,” Ortiz said he’d be out of action until the Spring. At the time, he hinted that a contract with EliteXC was all but signed, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the fallout from Kimbo Slice‘s loss — the financial and ethical scrutiny that EliteXC is now facing, as well as the unlikelihood of a high-profile match against Slice — has made Ortiz think twice about where to fight next.

Dana White is the one with the sore asshole.Tito Ortiz carried the UFC for years.

Hey tito's surgeon, that wasn't a deeply muscled core, it was the remains of dana white's broken off cock.
John Kimble- October 8, 2008 at 9:26 pm
I'm completely ignorant to back surgery recovery time, however i must ask this question.

Does a surgery that has him up and walking in an hour leave him out of fighting for nine months?
tree_choppa- October 8, 2008 at 4:12 pm
sounds like he needs a backiotomy

Sooooo... if EliteXC falls through and Affliction is in partnership with thim... how soon do we take bets that we'll be seeing Tito Ortiz and Jenna Jameson in "Rear Naked Choke" or simply "Tito Loves Jenna" or even, "The Waterhead and Plastic Fuck Doll 4?"

I used to be a HUGE Tito Ortiz fan. Back in the days of the Shamrock fued he was fun to watch and explosive as hell. I am dissapointed with the way Tito has handled things. He has turned into an over dramatic prick. "After all of the battling, and allegiance I pledged to them, they now have stooped so low as to not give me the medical care I so desperately needed." WTF. Tito stop being a punk ass bitch. He is so dramatic about EVERYTHING! I'm tired of hearing from him. He was once my favorite fighter. He now is just another Tool with a big head.
MMAnoob- October 8, 2008 at 11:52 am
Give him a title shot against Kimbo Slice. That would be amazing to watch. I would love that so I can wear my Affliction Shirts to the bar again and explain all the sick moves to everyone.
StinkHole- October 8, 2008 at 11:48 am
Ah..perfect.

Now we all know why Tito has been losing lately.

It's not because he is washed up and underskilled, its because he has a bo-bo on his back.

What a piece of shit Tito is..
mayhem420- October 8, 2008 at 11:20 am
Tito is a 2nd generation fighter, the game has passed him by and he is and will no longer be in any top 10.
He could still be competitive and put on a good show, but top level fight he isnt.
The guys he used to beat couldnt handle his ground and pound. Now fighters are so well rounded that he just cant rely on the take down anymore.
It also doesnt help that he's a cock mo fo that people just cant stand. Especially if you are losing fights that you used to win.
Jay Smith- October 8, 2008 at 3:34 am
What the fuck...................I remember when Tito was the shit. Charging out of his corner, and killin mutha fuckas. What happened to this guy, and why does he talk like that????? He makes himself sooooo hateable! Tito, your wifes a whore!

"I suffered excruciating pain that dehabilitated my performance and lessened my career ... for the fans." Goddammit this guy is a fucking idiot. I can't believe he's reproducing.

Tito and Judie are brothers. Acouple of pillow pumpers.
Tito's a Bitch- October 8, 2008 at 2:12 am
Gosh I am so sick of this Douche. Dr. Smith is so Generic. Probably a Doctor that doubles as an accountant and lawyer. His office is the backseat of a 79 Ford LTD. Does he seriously believe this crap or is he laughing behind the scenes. He makes Hulk Hogan look shy.
Frank- October 8, 2008 at 1:20 am
I wonder what specifically his back problem was? He doesn't seem to have a lot of specific info about what good ol' Dr. Smith was doing back there. Microdiscectomy? I don't think Tito would be walking back to his car an hour after a major open surgical procedure. My girlfriend was in the hospital for a week after her lumbar fusion surgery. But, she doesn't have a "densely muscled core" like Tito.
MMANewbExpert- October 8, 2008 at 1:09 am
Nphixion and The Biz.

If you couldn't tell that my post was pure sarcasm then you're a moron. You're the type of moron that most people think all MMA fans are.
I Know Nothing- October 8, 2008 at 12:41 am
I'm sure the scalpels made of surgical steel wilted when viewed Tito's "densely muscled core." At which point the doctor had to bring in a light-saber!!! Just a thought, but if Tito had a "Cranium Reduction" his back problems might clear up. It's either that or an orthopedic pillow to properly cradle that gargantuan mellon.
mma fan- October 7, 2008 at 11:58 pm
if he ever fights again will get to see if that is really true.
nphixion- October 7, 2008 at 11:16 pm
first post was Tito

fightfan was Dana

:)
fightfan- October 7, 2008 at 10:25 pm
So sick of this fucker. He just has to CONTINUE to try and bring attention to himself. Does he really suffer from some kind of attention defecit syndrome??? Always with a problem, then with the answer......Always breaking news. etc, etc, blah, blah freakin blah

I am too lazy to research and find the quote, but it was either Lyoto or Rashad, or one of his last fights where he said "he is 100% healthy" blah blah blah, bore, bore, bore

Always and excuse or a copout. Poorest sportmanship ever. Just an all around tool that needs to be the bully of the schoolyard, playing in the kiddie section, cuz he cant hang with the big kids.....It the only reason he will go away from the top 12 of 15 LH's in the world in the UFC. He is going to where he can seek the Kimbo treatment and fight slugs in order to look much better than he actually is.

I have always said the best thing that could happen is for crooked ass EliteXC to finally fail.....I take that back, the best thing could be the same, but Elite signs Tito to "record breaking" contract....then the promotion fails the next day
Hacksaw- October 7, 2008 at 10:19 pm
"an injury obviously acquired while fighting in the octagon" lol I bet he blew his spine out trying (failing?) to satisfy Jenna.
The Biz- October 7, 2008 at 10:18 pm
To MMANewbExpert: He ducked Chuck Liddell for years knowing he would he would get his ass kicked and lose the belt. Tito is a pussy!

I'm in the industry and I can't tell you the number of horror stories about people doing business with Tito only to get F'ed in the a$$ by him. He has no class, no ethics...all Tito cares about is Tito.

Don't let him fool you. He may have been good for the sport long ago, but that time has passed him by. Tito's a douche!
Summoner10- October 7, 2008 at 9:54 pm
Whatever. My mother has had suffered through horrible back problems so I sort of feel for the guy, but this just seems too well calculated to coincide with his next career move to a new organization. He has canceled fights for less before and we're supposed to believe he fought with mind numbling pain and couldnt even walk after the rashad fight? I remember those post fight videos and the post press conference, he walked himself to the podium just fine.
Fenix- October 7, 2008 at 9:42 pm
"and my densely muscled core that had to be separated in order to get to my spine."

*rolles eyes

Either way I'm happy for the guy. A healthy Tito is always good for the sport. I think he will end up with the UFC in the end which will be for the best fights to see him in anyway.
