Tito Ortiz Looking to Build Fighter-Businessmen on ‘TUF 11′

The eleventh season of The Ultimate Fighter is set to kick off on March 31st, and Tito Ortiz doesn’t plan on sleepwalking through his second tour of coaching duty like some people we know. As we see on this recent Inside MMA appearance, Ortiz vows to train his guys hard — not just as fighters, but as businessmen:

"This season ain’t gonna be about guys partying, guys making jokes on each other. This is gonna be about making legends, making champions, making the future Tito Ortizes, Chuck Liddells, Randy Coutures…TUF 3 was mostly about smearing [Ken] Shamrock and beating his guys. This one, I want to make superstars…I don’t want to teach them just the way to train, just the way to be fighters, but to be businessmen. To be behind the mic, PR, you know, really understanding the business side of it and not just being ‘the fighters.’ And this is what I’m going to bring to the table when it comes to doing this year of The Ultimate Fighter."

So will Ortiz be giving seminars on personal branding in between the sparring sessions? ("Nobody leaves this gym until they give me three new t-shirt designs!") Will he make his guys watch old tapes of him on Celebrity Apprentice? As Bruce Buffer points out, Chuck Liddell will probably just show up and be Chuck, so maybe there is an advantage for the TUF 11 hopefuls to work under a master self-promoter like Ortiz. And maybe Tito’s personal attention to his team will make him the surprise good guy of the season…

I would like to see more of Bruce Buffer commentating BUT staying OUTSIDE the ring also. SOOOOooooo sick of him presenting the fighters.

Tito on the other hand.... you go boy! Seems you're cleaning your shit up. . . .
I see Chuck being a "Rampage type" coach and losing the competition but still kicking ass in the Big Fight with TITO.

Any intelligent contestant that season will actually be able to take a lot away from Tito. Tito, like it or not, has a strong following. (Even if its just to record the next dumb fucking thing he says) But lets face it people, in a sport where the competitors are underpaid at best, Tito has managed to pull his millions out of it. That is something any young professional should be coming out to do. No one lasts forever fighting...capitalizing on the time you do have is a skill that some have and some dont. Tito has it. And if he didnt, Jenna does and should be pulling all the strings by now anyway.

Plus I actually believe Tito is a quality coach. He is not the elite perhaps, but he will pay attention and give advice. On the level that most of the contestants have been of late, Tito's cardio mind and desire to actually teach will benefit all on his team. He may be teaching the B game but thats more than most of these contestants will be able to handle anyway.

So tito will instill in them his gift for whining like a bitch, appealing to the basest brainless teenaged fanboys, spouting mindless gibberish including being occasionally racist, and being periodically fired for monkey wrenching the company he works for and consistently insulting his boss.

Hate to say it but UFC falling for this 3rd grade bullshit again makes them look like they still haven't figured out the most basic schoolyard tactics all these years later after getting punked and played like fools by pride the first time.

UFC makes me sick sometimes.
I hope they pay dearly for this because they deserve it.

I love how he throws himself in there with Randy and Chuck like he deserves it. Not even close. That was a wonderful observation I just made. Here is a list of people who have made great observations. Me, Abe Lincoln, and Dan Rather.

I don't know about the life coaching side but I think Tito will be a better coach than Chuck. He's a tool and all but the man works hard, he takes pride in what he does and he wants his team to shine. Chuck is a bit too laid back and I don't think he'll be as focused on his team as Tito will.

Man, am I ever looking forward to this.

Tito Ortiz going all Tony Robbins on his team is going to be one of the most wonderful things any of us have ever witnessed. Although since Diego Sanchez all ready has "Yes!" branded to himself, I would like to suggest "What?" for Tito's team. Then on the off chance L'il Jon shows anywhere on the MMA radar in the future he can have "Ok!" thus completing the holy trinity of references from 4 years ago.

Also, how many coach's challenges this season do you think are going to be lifted directly from "Are you smarter than a 5th Grader?"

That's my time,

I need a coffee.

Tito looks like the Cookie Monster in the accompanying image.

I think Ken's coaching was so abysmal because he was solely focusing his rage on Tito and not his guys. Who knows how things are going up at the Lions Den right now, though.

Tito really seemed to take a level of pride training his team in TUF3 as memory recalls, and (again, if I'm remembering this right) I'm pretty sure Bisping has trained up at Big Bear with him since. So he must have been decent.

I have to respectfully disagree.

Is Tito the most evolved fighter today? NO

However during his heyday to won the LHW title and held it longer than any other guy has before or since.

Tito is a pioneer in the same way that Mark Coleman was a pioneer. He had a style that nobody could compete with for many years.

Chuck had a more visually pleasing style and Dana's verbal fellatio to promote his accomplishments.

Without Royce Gracie,Ken Shamrock, Tito, Randy, and Chuck. The UFC and MMA in general isn't what it is today. I firmly believe that.

$3 says between tito and chuck, this season will be the most subtitle'd season in the history of TUF.

and yes, im fully aware of how many subtitles there were in the UK vs US season.

The screenshot above is priceless!
They are looking at Tito like, "Are you serious?".
danomite- January 8, 2010 at 8:57 am
I think Tito's idea of teaching them to be superstars will basically consist of him jumping in the ring with a mic after they win and telling them how they are feeling right now.
Birdman- January 8, 2010 at 8:43 am
I have to say that I don't think Tito is nearly as smart as he thinks he is however, he has been one of the best coaches ever on TUF. IMO I also believe he actually has a chance in the final showdown with Chuck. Chuck is awesome don't get me wrong but I just don't know anymore. If Tito does win I think he gets the winner of Coutour/ Coleman. If Chuck wins I think he fights Coleman if he wins. If Chuck wins and Randy wins I don't know what they will do with either.

@ Get off me

Yep, i agree

Flag on the play for Tito, he is no Chuck Liddell or Randy Couture and I cannot stand when he throws his name out there like he is a pioneer of MMA. Tito was at best a decent fighter, in the last few years he has declined heaily in my books both inside(fighting and comments) and outside(comments) the octagon.

@portland mma
Me neither, but I will tell you there was a time way back when I met Ken Shamrock and a young Vernon White at the airport and Vernon had just won a nhb tournament training out of the lion's den. I think Shamrock was a good coach at some point, but I think he was past that point on TUF 3 thus making Tito look better. The only thing I can say about Tito's coaching is that is was fairly good on TUF 3, but again the foil was an out of touch Ken Shamrock, I hope Liddell out coaches and then beats the fireshorts off Tito's ass.....AGAIN!
Clinch-Smash- January 8, 2010 at 8:00 am
what a fuckin joke, Tito.......a life coach.....hahahahaha.
you just got pieced up homey- January 8, 2010 at 7:57 am
I wonder if Tito will bring Dean "someone please god kidnap me and take me to Thailand for a year" Lister back as his jitz coach again
ReX13- January 8, 2010 at 7:47 am
Tito is going to teach his team about how to operate "behind the mic"?

Oh shit, this is going to be DVR'ed every time.

HDNet just re-aired the Affliction Day of Reckoning event with Ortiz--and completely cut him out of the broadcast. I was simultaneously amused and disappointed.
portland mma- January 8, 2010 at 7:46 am
I can't tell if I was really impressed with Tito's coaching on TUF 3 or if it was the simple fact that I was comparing him to Ken Shamrock.
