Twitter Beef of the Day: The UFC Responds to Cheap Shot from…The Los Angeles Kings?

*Someone* who runs the Los Angeles Kings’ Twitter account is jealous that our Guida vs. Danzig was better than theirs.

Judging from a quick glance at our Twitter followers, I’m guessing at least thirty percent of our readers are either Canadian or Eastern European. I’m guessing at least twenty percent of our American readers are hipsters who “ironically” “like” things that most of their peers don’t care about. I’m also guessing at least ten percent of the remaining American readers are from Pennsylvania, New York, New England, Minnesota or Detroit. Basically, if my assumptions are accurate, I’m guessing we have a lot of hockey fans here.

Those of you who follow hockey may already know that whoever runs the Los Angeles Kings Twitter account doesn’t exactly shy away from a good ole fashioned Twitter beef. That account is ready to deliver a knockout punch to anyone who takes a jab at their players, fans or the awful ratings that the Los Angeles Kings brought in on their way to their first Stanley Cup in team history. Oh, and apparently anyone who invites their players to an event for free publicity, because that’s clearly an insult to the organization somehow.

With the UFC heading to the Kings’ stomping grounds, the Staples Center, for August 4th’s UFC on FOX 4, the company offered the Stanley Cup champions an invitation to the event. Much like Lebron James at UFC 148, the invitation is a good way to build momentum for the Kings – not to mention the NHL as a whole – leading up to the 2012-2013 season. For whatever reason, however, the Kings decided to respond to this by tweeting “Sorry, the Cup is only for those who play a real sport.”

The tweet has since been deleted, but whaaaaat? They invited you to come watch fights, guys, not to a triathlon for Christ’s sake.

Seriously though, how does free publicity warrant a cheap shot towards the UFC? I’m willing to bet that there’s a significant chunk of MMA fans who like hockey (such as myself and Jason), and that there’s an even bigger percentage of hockey fans who like MMA. Unfortunately for the Kings, an organization that’s all about promoting fights is probably the last group of people that you want to pick a fight with – even if it is just online. Here’s how the UFC responded:

That knockout is worth the five minute major.  Next time, keep it on the ice.

I've been a hockey fan for 40 years and in that time I've seen a lot of hockey. Wayne Gretzky may have ultimately introduced hockey to the West Coast, but I'm responsible for bringing it to the attention of all the kids that lived in my condominium complex in Anaheim, CA 11 years before Disney brought The Mighty Ducks to the big screen and 12 years before they brought an actual team to the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim. I supported the Kings the best I could starting in 81', but it was never easy when their own local paper dedicated a 1 inch by 1 inch area in the Sports section to whatever happened the day before at the Great Western Forum or on the road. No one cared, no one went and nobody really knew who the Kings were. I remember wearing a King Jersey to school and kids asking me what I was wearing. In the 45 years the Kings have existed, they accomplished nothing until June 11, 2012. I'm not going to take anything away from their accomplishment. In each series, the Kings took a commanding 3-0 lead. They were clearly head over skates better than everyone else. No one deserved the cup more than they did and although I prefer seeing the Ducks (fan since 93 and going on 5 years of being a season ticket holder) being more successful, I was sincerely happy for the Kings and the respectable fans that needed some type of award for putting up with more Kings disappointments than accomplishments in 45 years. UNFORTUNATELY, there are a number of Kings fans that cross the line with their stupidity, some of which make comments on behalf of the actual organization. By all means, come to the Honda Center and support your team. Chant your Go Kings Go and cheer when Dustin Brown makes a good check on a Duck in open ice or when Anze Kopitar scores the big goal. I paid for my ticket to hopefully see the Ducks win, but more importantly to see entertaining hockey. I did not come to the game to hear the Kings fans yell profanities for the sake of yelling profanities. If you're not a fan of Corey Perry or Ryan Getzlaf, that's fine. You don't have to be. But to yell out that they’re homosexuals and that they suck each other off is probably a bit too much considering the number of kids that go to these games. It doesn't surprise me in the least that the stupidity carries over to the internet. The Kings have won one Stanley Cup in 45 years and somehow they've become the greatest hockey team ever and that somehow justifies their ignorant and arrogant comments made on twitter, facebook and other social media sites. I’m not surprised.

ahaha.. nice ufc...
but lets be honest here.. the LAK checking line would destroy the UFC's... there's probably only one person there that can skate... and GSP ain't no checking line guy... he just doesn't have that grit in him... half that line have probably never seen ice... if they get buses confused with horses how are they gonna react when they first see a hockey rink... C'MON!
Also, they'd get a too many men penalty right away

Living in So Cal but being a Ducks fan - it is not shocking that the LA KINGS acted the fool. Whenever they play at the Pond . . . errrr Honda Center against the Ducks, their fans are dipshits and the organization as a whole is full of mouth-breathers. Just because they cruised to their first CUP ever doesn't mean they can act like assholes. I'd rather have Corey Perry than Jonathan Quick any day you fuckers. Now, Mr. LA KING FAN - give me my valet ticket and go park my car - asshole - and keep your grubby paws outta my change dish.

If DaMarques Johnson gets injured, put Johnathan Quick in there against Mike Swick, we'll see who's best.

Canuck Power.

As a hockey player and obvious fan I am blown away that whatever fuckstick who controls their twitter account would ever tweet such a twat response. Hahaha, I guess that tweet was more or a twat. But congrats on the UFC's response. Certainly a PC KO.

You will have to forgive the Kings, see, for the first time in their 45 year history they actually one something that mattered. They are not used to being in the limelight, they are more used to being forgotten, maybe that is why they are talking out their butts.
