UFC 102 Video Hype: Marquardt vs. Maia

Though it was snubbed from the UFC 102 extended trailer, the middleweight bout between Nate Marquardt and Demian Maia is as significant as any other fight on the card. At most, the winner will find himself one win away from a shot at Anderson Silva‘s 185-pound title. In the above video profile, Marquardt says his goal is to be the best in every area of MMA. He’ll try to keep the fight standing, but he isn’t afraid to go to the ground with Maia. After the jump, Maia describes jiu-jitsu as the "boat" that led him to MMA, and says he’ll be sticking to his strengths next Saturday. "It’s no secret, if I can grapple with him I prefer [it]." So whose gameplan will come out on top? Your predictions, please…

this will be a 3 round, technical grappling contest - while standing and on the ground... the most likely fight result is decision to the fighter who is the best grappler on that night.

if maia can smother and/or frustrate marquardt in all moments of the fight, maia will win by decision. if maia is not good enough to keep his body on marquardt for the entire fight and marquardt gets to show his striking for more than 30-45 seconds at the beginning of each round, that will probably be enough for nate to win by decision.

the true winner will be dan henderson.

I'll have to go with the general consensus on this one. I'm all about BJJ but even Maia will be hard pushed to catch Nate in something when there's striking allowed. I don't think he'll finish him but I think he'll be on top enough for the judges to give him the nod.

Barring any unnecessary strikes to the back of the head followed by an unneventful middleweight title bout of course.

I'm going with Nate on this one. BJJ black belt + great striking + wrestling + athleticism and strength > BJJ Master.

This should be a good one, but as Maia says at the 2:10 mark of his video, "EveryFing can Happis" in this fight.
And whoever said Nate was arrogant, has never seen the dude fight or, seen any interviews with him.

Its funny, when this fight was announced for this card I figured it would be the co-headlining fight, then when I saw that Jardine and Silva was on there I understood, but to have it before the Chris Leben and Rosholt fight makes no sense to me at all. Yes, Chris is from portland...no, no one gives a fuck, I don't know anyone who has met Chris and actually liked the guy. I'm probably more excited for this fight then any of the other ones on the card, I Love Maia's BJJ but I've talked to people that have seen him train and they say his striking is almost non existent, so I'm curious to see how this is gonna play out.

I think this fight is one of the more even matched of the year, to be honest. Maia is proving to be a BJJ deity and subbing guys that ought to have solid submission defense. Marquardt is the savvy veteran though, and his striking is pretty monsterous, too. This fight could be better than we're giving it credit for.

Or it could be the hangover talkin'. I misspelled like 600,000 words typing that :(

marquardt is going to own maia. lister couldn't do shit to maia so i'm not sure how maia is going to slip something in against a true veteran. super well rounded fighters are bad matchups for 1 trick ponies.

The longer the fight goes the more chance Maia has to sink in a sneaky sub and snap off an appendage. Barring a one hit KO from Nate, I'm going with Maia. And so is this here fifty dollar note!

I think Marquardt has the defense to keep from getting subbed and the striking to pound out the decision. I don't see this fight being middle-of-the-road; I think it'll either be very dull or very exciting.
