UFC 103 Prelims to Air Live, Free, and Uninterrupted on Spike

(Time to earn that thing, Effy. Photo courtesy of MMA Frenzy.)

In what will hopefully become a recurring trend, the UFC has decided to air a two-hour commercial-free telecast of UFC 103‘s undercard on Spike TV as a lead-in to the pay-per-view card, according to the OC Register. And why are we being treated to such generosity? Well, MMA-hater Floyd Mayweather Jr. is fighting Juan Manuel Marquez on the same night, and Dana White wants to be a pain in their asses. That’s good enough for us. It’s only a matter of time before the UFC begins counter-programming NBA playoff games and presidential addresses.

UFC 103, which will be headlined by Rich Franklin vs. Vitor Belfort, and also features Mirko Cro Cop vs. Junior Dos Santos, Mike Swick vs. Martin Kampmann, and Josh Koscheck vs. Frank Trigg, has a whopping eight fights scheduled for the undercard. It’s hard to imagine all of them will make the broadcast, but we could be seeing the returns of Vladimir Matyushenko and Dan Lauzon, the Octagon debut of Paul Daley, and Efrain Escudero‘s first fight since winning TUF 8‘s lightweight trophy. UFC 103′s full lineup is after the jump.

Rich Franklin vs. Vitor Belfort
Mirko Cro Cop vs. Junior Dos Santos
Mike Swick vs. Martin Kampmann
Josh Koscheck vs. Frank Trigg
Tyson Griffin vs. Hermes Franca

Efrain Escudero vs. Cole Miller
Jim Miller vs. Thiago Tavares
Dan Lauzon vs. Rafaello Oliveira
Paul Daley vs. Brian Foster
Drew McFedries vs. Tomasz Drwal
Eliot Marshall vs. Jason Brilz
Vladimir Matyushenko vs. Igor Pokrajac
Rob Emerson vs. Rafael Dos Anjos

So what happens if their are a lot of quick fights on the main card? Do we watch the same fights twice? I'm not complaining about getting free fights, I'm just curious.

This is nice! I usually buy the ppv's anyway, but now I just might watch the prelim's on spike and watch the main event fights on CP. Dana should hire me to manage the UFC's money.

call the bar ahead of time and tell 'em you're bringing 15 people if they show the spike prelims.

This is awesome. We can finally see some of the fights that will be more exciting than the main card usually is. Now the question is should I stay home and buy the pay per view or go to the bar and trust they will be showing the spike version of it and then the pay per view... decisions decisions.

One Two: +1

Seems like they were wasting all those prelims and not making any money off of them. I mean, how many people buy the prelims on the UFC Vault? Probably not many.

This is effing great! I'm still not getting the ppv though....The UFC has enough of my cash.

Nice! Also, I think Thiago Tavares is injured and is being replaced.

I'll tell you why they are doing it. Same thing the WWF use to do. Have something for free leading up to the pay per-view and people will watch, see all they hype videos and buy it at the last minute. This is a very smart move, and it beats the hell out of showing Twins again if your Spike.
