UFC 109 Aftermath Notes: End of Night Bonuses, Mark Coleman's Future + More

Following an expectation-exceeding night of action at UFC 109, the UFC handed out $60,000 pay-bumps to the following competitors:
Fight of the Night: Chael Sonnen and Nate Marquardt, for their bloody 15-minute grind, in which Sonnen survived a nasty choke attempt in the third round to secure the decision victory and earn a middleweight title shot.
Knockout of the Night: Matt Serra, for beating down Frank Trigg and proving that his hands are always dangerous, even if they're on the end of very short arms.
Submission of the Night: Paulo Thiago, for putting Mike Swick to sleep with a D'Arce choke after knocking him to the mat in the second round of their fight. Thiago: 2, AKA: 1.
In other news...
Mark Coleman may have reached the end of the road as a UFC fighter. During the post-event press conference, Dana White told reporters:
As for a grudge match between Coleman and Tito Ortiz — who taunted Coleman after the main event — White isn't interested. "Tito is a lot younger than him, and Tito's talking shit to Coleman after Coleman just lost the fight that he's wanted his whole life," White said. "Tito's fighting Chuck. I'm not even thinking about Tito-Coleman."
Speaking of firings, Fox Fight Game's Mike Straka asked Dana White if Frank Trigg was in any danger after picking up his second-straight stoppage loss in the UFC, to which Dana responded "probably, yeah, I would say so."

I gave him no chance against Marquardt but he man-handled him.

MMAth does not apply to the UFC and never has. See Anderson Silva v. Vitor Belfort matchup, and the fact that Coleman v. Couture was being billed as winner get shot at LHW title.

I could have sworn they said at the end of the broadcast that Randy picked up the submission of the night bonus, but I'm glad they gave it to Paulo. With the shape Coleman was in, slapping on that sleeper wasn't the most impressive feat. Anytime an AKA guy loses, I'm happy.
Chael Sonnen opened up a lot of eyes yesterday. The best thing about his performance is that it wasn't a typical wrestling grind to a victory ala Jon Fitch's boring lay and prays. Sonnen was brutalizing Marquardt, and took a beating himself. If he ends up fighting Silva, I'll root for him if he can figure him out.

FINALLY the ufc is going to put anderson silva against someone who CAN and WANTS to take him to the ground instead of trying to boost his P4P hype by feeding him inferior strikers. Unfortunately this person is Chael Sonnen who happens to suck at submission defense and will therefore probably make Silva look even better by getting submitted once he takes it to the ground.

I was describing Sonnen as a more effective Guida, but Jon Fitch with better ground and pound is a good one too.
For the panel....What does Mazzagatti get paid for exactly???? I saw them have to wake him up during the Miller v Maia because there was a low blow....that guy is beyond brutal.

Maybe I'm giving Tito too much credit, but I think he was doing Coleman a favor - or at least TRYING to. He creates bad blood with Coleman and maybe the UFC lets Coleman hang around for a grudge match against Tito after the TUF finale. They shouldn't, but then, the UFC has done a lot of things they shouldn't.

At the end of the broadcast they did give Sub of the Night to Couture and I was shocked. Thiago definitely deserved it.
Sonnen vs. Marquardt should prove to be one of the bigger upsets of the year, and congrats to Sonnen, I gave him no chance either.
I thoroughly enjoy watching Swick lose, but he looks emaciated at welterweight and he's in the wrong weight class. I think the top level middleweights scared the hell out him and he believed he'd have more success at welterweight so he moved down. Well... it's not working out that good for him. Swick refusing to fight AKA members, and not actually earning a title shot... he doesn't have a whole lot of fight options left at welterweight.
As far as Randy/Coleman goes... were there some people that actually thought Coleman had a chance? I saw it as a fight that Coleman could make a few bucks off of and start planning for a non-fighting future. A courtesy match against an all time great who's classy enough to not brutalize a weaker fighter. Randy didn't have to choke him out. He was killing Coleman in the stand up and having his way with him.
Jesus didn't tap, and neither did Coleman, kudos to him.

Are you for real? Longest consecutive winning streak in UFC history, tied for most consecutive title defenses, two wins @ LHW (one being a former TUF and LHW champ and all around tough guy), three wins over two middleweight champions (Franklin and Henderson). He's lost one round in ten UFC matches, and hasn't lost in 4 years. A win over Belfort would give Silva the longest title reign in UFC history, and has dominated the MW division since his arrival into the UFC.
And you don't consider him one of the top 2 pound for pounders in the world? Can Chael Sonnen take Silva to the ground... probably. Will it work for him.... doubtful. Henderson (grappler), Marquardt (BJJ/pancrase), Lutter (BJJ)... I don't think Silva would be too worried about Sonnen's ground game and Silva's a much better striker than Sonnen.
No matter who wins in Abu Dhabi... Sonnen's got his hands full in his next fight, but I t think it will be Silva.

Watch how Silva knocked Griffin the fuck out and youl'll understand why he will get destroyed. Now I know that Sonnen will take him down but I don't see him controlling Silva like he did Marquardt. Silva's a bit bigger than Nate which will help him not get man-handled. But more than anything, Sonnen just doesn't have what it takes to beat Silva. Plain and simple.
