UFC 109 Aftermath Notes: End of Night Bonuses, Mark Coleman’s Future + More

(Chael Sonnen explains that it’s the Ultimate *Fighting* Championship, not the Ultimate Mitt-Hitting, High-Altitude Training, Flipping a Tire Around, Screaming the Word "Yes" Championship. Props: MMA Fighting)

Following an expectation-exceeding night of action at UFC 109, the UFC handed out $60,000 pay-bumps to the following competitors:

Fight of the Night: Chael Sonnen and Nate Marquardt, for their bloody 15-minute grind, in which Sonnen survived a nasty choke attempt in the third round to secure the decision victory and earn a middleweight title shot.

Knockout of the Night: Matt Serra, for beating down Frank Trigg and proving that his hands are always dangerous, even if they’re on the end of very short arms.

Submission of the Night: Paulo Thiago, for putting Mike Swick to sleep with a D’Arce choke after knocking him to the mat in the second round of their fight. Thiago: 2, AKA: 1.

In other news…

Mark Coleman may have reached the end of the road as a UFC fighter. During the post-event press conference, Dana White told reporters:

"I think tonight was probably Coleman’s last fight in the UFC…I have nothing but respect for him, and I’ll say this now, too: Mark Coleman has always been a stand-up guy to me. He’ll always be a part of this organization. I just think he’ll have a hard time competing with the guys at the top level. Age is a factor with him…It’s tough to say, ‘It’s over, and I’ve got to hang it up.’…It’s the toughest thing in the world, and I hate dealing with it. It sucks."

As for a grudge match between Coleman and Tito Ortiz — who taunted Coleman after the main event — White isn’t interested. "Tito is a lot younger than him, and Tito’s talking shit to Coleman after Coleman just lost the fight that he’s wanted his whole life," White said. "Tito’s fighting Chuck. I’m not even thinking about Tito-Coleman."

Speaking of firings, Fox Fight Game’s Mike Straka asked Dana White if Frank Trigg was in any danger after picking up his second-straight stoppage loss in the UFC, to which Dana responded "probably, yeah, I would say so."

Questions for your MMA discussion groups:
– Who should Randy Couture fight next?
– Should Rolles Gracie commit seppuku after disgracing his family’s name with his garbage-ass performance against the Mexicutioner?
– When Mike Goldberg said that Phil Davis vs. Jon Jones would be an "explosive matchup," did anybody else LOL?

@rlh61 - no dude, that is what makes you look like you do know what you're talking about. In a sane universe, Vitor should have a 1 in 100 chance against Anderson. And Sonnen should have had even less against Marquardt. His victory was legit, i cannot deny. It just seems that lately a smotherers chance has been good for a lot more than it used to. And a punchers chance too. First Lawler. Now Sonnen. Is Mars too close to Earth or wtf is going on?

@r3ap3rmma - He has beaten Nate Marquardt, unfortunately. What I would like to know is how the hell he got a match with Marquardt in the first place? And I believe you have it backwards on Gomi-Florian.

u know what i hated chael with a passion but i have to respect his performance and his no fear of anderson silva (cuz all the other fighters are def intimidated a lil), i think spider could possibly be in trouble if chael can implement the same gameplan he used against nate minus the guillotines
R3AP3RMMA- February 8, 2010 at 6:36 am
I can't stand Chael Sonnen who the hell has he beat in the UFC that entitles him to a title shot. Also who the hell thinks he is going to have an interesting fight against whoever is the middleweight champ at that point he is just going to lay on top of the person every chance he gets, Marquardt still deserves the title shot first cause Vitor Magically Jumped in line in front of him, Marquardt only took this fight to keep fresh and to have an oppurtunity to fight while Vitor gets HIS shot at the belt. Don't get me wrong Chael did put it to Nate but I do not see how this should CATAPULT him into a number 1 contendership. None of his fights in the UFC have ended in any kind of spectacular fashion, he always leaves it in the Judges hands and he has not beat anyone of worth till now with Nate. So can someone tell me what the hell is the UFC thinking? Who all thinks Takanori Gomi is going to hand Florian his ass?

once again, tito ortiz shows the world how classy a guy he is, what a fuckin jackass. dont care if he's tryin to hype himself, the organization, or another fighter, that was probably colemans' last curtain call, show some respect to a hall of famer of the sport, let the man have his moment.

I hope titos' next opponent kicks the everloving fuck outta him.
rlh61- February 8, 2010 at 6:01 am
Look what I did with that last post...I completely ignored the existence of Vitor. That's the kind of thing that makes people (me) look like they have no clue when it comes to MMA...maybe I'm the d-bag.
rlh61- February 8, 2010 at 5:56 am

I hear you. Never know what to expect out of this guy. The way I see it, he beat Nate on the controversial decison or early stoppage...I think we have to give him props until we see how he fairs against Silva. That being said, I'm not putting all my Potato Chips on him when he and Anderson meet up.

Maybe I'll put half on Sonnen...then when I lose I can blame CP and swedish will come to my rescue.
JamesToneysContract- February 8, 2010 at 3:45 am
I don't know about all this info, but without the Potato Index I'm completely lost as to how each fighter's outlook was affected by last nights action.

I just don't know what to think about this Chael dude. He is pretty hilarious I'll give him that. I just remember him getting sub'd by Babalu, and then again by Paulo Filho and thinking man this dude is lame. Then next time I see him he beats Filho and I'm like ok well that was lame but looks like he is getting better. Then Maia chokes him out and I think nah it was a fluke he still sucks. Then he beats Okami and I think ok maybe he is good. Now he beats Marquardt, so do I give him his props? I really don't want to. I can't think of a fight that he has finished. Is it possible to respect a dude who never finishes a fight?
peckawoodd- February 7, 2010 at 10:38 pm
All of this talk about Chonnen being the answer to Anderson Silva is a little premature. If you think that he'll be able to do to Silva what he did to Nate, you're greatly mistaken. Watch how Silva knocked Griffin the fuck out and youl'll understand why he will get destroyed. Now I know that Sonnen will take him down but I don't see him controlling Silva like he did Marquardt. Silva's a bit bigger than Nate which will help him not get man-handled. But more than anything, Sonnen just doesn't have what it takes to beat Silva. Plain and simple. Sonnen is the complete wrestler, Silva is the complete fighter. He will get cracked or submitted.

AKA sucks. Every last one of em...
dogpt3- February 7, 2010 at 10:04 pm
This is ridiculous. Im glad Chael won, I even dropped 50 bucks on him to win. But if you guys can't see the wool being pulled over your eyes then you are idiots. He is attacking Silva and talking so much shit to the point that he actually has people convinced that Silva is fake. This guys a sneaky little politician playing angles building hype for the fight, he's smart. I love how some people are already jumping on the Chael bandwagon cuz he beat Marquardt, who got demolished by Silva. Silva's record speaks for itself, demoralizing Forest Griffin is not an easy task, chael is so far out of his league against Silva he may as well try and get as much attention now as he can. If he does fight Silva, its done dada and he can take up a career in stand up comedy. what was it he said about wanting to fight silva so he can just run through his long legs? sounds a little bit like the time a dude named leban said he would walk through Andersons punches.
BrandonTheTruth- February 7, 2010 at 9:28 pm
why does swedish keep coming back to this site? oh yeah... because he's a middle aged douche bag living in his mommy's basement with nothing better to do than rag on cp articles, which by the way, he keeps coming back to read. fucking idiot.
Randy Pan- February 7, 2010 at 7:31 pm
Anderson Silva beats Belfort, beats Sonnen, GSP's first middleweight fight should be Sonnen.

Sonnen is number one contender? I haven't been that surprised by the way a fight turned out since Machida v Rua. Interesting how Nate destroyed Maia, Maia destroyed Sonnen, and Sonnen destroyed Nate (so to speak). Striker beat ground game, ground game beat wrestling, wrestling beat striker.

Franchise1998- February 7, 2010 at 7:16 pm
Ok, so let me get this straight, this guy Chael gives an interview, and
- speaks intelligently,
- admits to being pretty beaten up,
- during the interview it would appear his cut starts to open
- states that he believes he can beat Silva,
- states he would prefer Silva over Belfort, as he knows that Vitor would be tougher for him
- is openly annoyed with guys in UFC that use all these various training methods, when his method is "fighting" and he says that 'there's nothing wrong with that, it's just that that's what I prefer to do . . '

and he is considered a douche? In all honesty guys, not trying to start a debate, but what am I missing? He did beat Nate, and Nate - Nate was classy in defeat -, and while it wasn't the UFC fight of the year, Nate knew he got beat. Am I the only one that thinks this Chael seems pretty decent - not that I am a huge fan of the guy, just getting tired of guys that talk trash, and then seeing the press pick that up and run with it.
LockDown- February 7, 2010 at 7:15 pm
The Ultimate decent Gracie is Roger.
I can't understand how people grabbed all this hype over Rolles. The guy has not a history even in BJJ.
LoneWolf- February 7, 2010 at 6:57 pm
I still can't stand Chael.....hes such a freaking douche
jizzninja- February 7, 2010 at 6:27 pm
I think his head could fit in it, may be a lil snug but definitely able to fit
jizzninja- February 7, 2010 at 6:21 pm
I want to see jon bones fight silva, call me crazy but that dudes nasty and be it he's young its that young confidence and unorthodox striking that fks people up. I think dude could fuck silva up. Vitors gonna get ko in the first 30 seconds via silvas precise precision;)
bombsauce- February 7, 2010 at 6:09 pm
Jenna has been banged by a lot of dudes, but I bet Tito's head is still bigger than her vag....
rlh61- February 7, 2010 at 5:25 pm
I'm with deadpanda...didn't swedish have some other dumb-as-fuck comment a few weeks back?

As if CP was holding a gun to someone's head and forcing them to make bets. The picks may have been off, but give me a break. And if anyone is in dire straits from betting on MMA fights, they've got bigger problems than the money lost.

It just pisses me off when someone makes a comment that implies people shouldn't take responsibility for themselves and thier own actions. What a d-bag.
KidDinomite- February 7, 2010 at 4:38 pm
Gracie 2.0? More like Gracie -2.

I've never seen anyone with the last name Gracie lose so bad in my life. That was embarrassing, especially since he was fighting someone who doesn't look like a high level striker. You could tell that he's a one-dimensional fighter in that he didn't even look like he trained in striking before this fight. Seriously, why were people building this guy up as the next level of Gracie fighters?
AussieJosh- February 7, 2010 at 3:53 pm
loser of Rampage v Jackson or winner of Chuck V Tito yes , BUT.........them fights are a long long way off! he would not get to fight them untill the later half of this year. Randy is OLD!!! He needs fights as soon as he can! he needs a fight in about 12 weeks time
I can think of off the top of my head is Forrest Griffen, hamill or soszynski? Or Thiago silva.
DazedNConfused- February 7, 2010 at 3:32 pm
seriously? Chael grinds a decision against nate "THE GREAT" and people start thinking he can wreck Anderson Silva. Mannn. It'll be a Travis Lutter all over again. Traingle choke.
iDestroy- February 7, 2010 at 2:49 pm
I'm mad at you guys for making me think that chael sonnen wasn't the man. You guys.

Anderson is good and all, but I think he'll have a lot of trouble with chael. Unless he can catch him on his way in for a shot or in a sub I think sonnen could take him. That is if he can make it past vitor. Hopefully not though.
Smitty- February 7, 2010 at 2:18 pm
Yo, 831, Travesty, and Keyser Soze, don't trip off the haters. Keyser broke it down for these dumb asses the best, and the people saying shit like Anderson Silva fans want to have sex with him, are the ones that look the most ridiculous. Even most of the fighters of the UFC say The spider is the best or, at least in the top 3 of the p4p rankings. It's ok to hope he loses, but you make yourself look completly silly by saying all this other shit about him that no one else even believes. Shows how much they know about the sport......
