Are you noticing a pattern here? By bizarre coincidence, the top six fights at UFC 117 (August 7th, Oakland) all feature an American fighter taking on a Brazilian fighter. It’s not an official gimmick like UFC 58′s "USA vs. Canada" setup — in which the Yanks went 5-3 against the Canucks — but it’ll be an interesting theme for the night, and hopefully the UFC will make the most of it. (Sorry Chandella, but we’ve found your replacement.) I’ll go out on a limb and say Brazil takes this event in a 4-2 rout, with Fitch and Guida scoring the only wins for the home team. Your predictions?
After the jump: Joe Rogan runs down the Hughes vs. Almeida matchup, and Jon Fitch discusses his co-headlining rematch against Thiago Alves.

commentsAs for the card, there's a lot of bouts with upset-potential. Roy Nelson for example is someone nobody expects to win but he might just do it anyway. And although I recognize the 99% possibility he's simply gonna get Fitch'ed, Thiago Alves might...just might...ah, well. Nah. You're right. Hughes vs. Almeida could be declared a draw for sheer irrelevance though.
This will be my first and quite possibly my last live UFC event, Travelling from Canada is quite expensive,...unless you have a friend who works for Air Canada...
I couldn't pass this up as I am 100% sure Anderson Silva will out-strike and out- maneuver Chael Sonnen. I just wanted to be there to see one of the best Pound4pound, Muay Thai strikers in MMA do his magic.
If he clowns around and showboats during this fight you will hear me Booing louder than any fan in the arena.
Should he repeat his jack-ass performance like the Damian Mia fight, I will start cheering for Sonnen.
Muay Thai is steeped in respect for your opponent and his skills, I don't care how good you are, disrespecting your opponent like he did Mia wont sit well with me at all.
Fight with honor Anderson or risk losing a ton of fans.
Fitch > Alves
Guida > Dos Anjos
Almeida > Hughes
Nelson > Dos Santos
Thiago Silva > Tim Boetsch
put that on your fight picker and thank me later!
Anderson Silva > Chael Sonnen
Fitch > Alves
Guida > Dos Anjos (I just really enjoy watching Guida fight and I will be rooting for him)
Hughes > Almeida
Nelson < Dos Santos
Thiago Silva > Tim Boetsch
Hopefully Pitbull can tag the Human Blanket during the 3 seconds at the beginning of the round when the fight is on the feet.
Oh yeah, and 4 - 2 Brazil. Chael will bring back the Anderson people used to like.
I'm basing my assessment off of the GSP/Alves fight. GSP may have won, even dominated the fight, but still. Alves did stop some takedowns, and was able to get back to his feet (fightmetric says he stuffed 2 of 10 attempts). Not the best as far as numbers go, but they were GSP takedowns.
Basically I think it's obvious that while it is standing, Alves will easily outstrike Fitch, which he couldn't do to GSP, hence the beating he received. The big thing will be if he can get back to his feet after being taken down.
Lets not forget that Fitch is due for a loss. Like come on, the guy has fought so many guys other then GSP, he's bound to finally lose to someone.
Oh, and if you're gonna replace Chandella you need to do better than that Olympic Powerlifter you put up there. Seriously, even Lee Priest is jealous of those monster thighs. If I ever want a girl to leg press me in and out of her then maybe I'd get a girl like that, but until then no thanks.
Thiago is gonna win, tho
Alves has been known to have great TDD, as he showed vs. Koscheck. Lets not compare Fitch to GSP's takedowns now.
On another note, USA could pull some wins with Fitch, Guida and Hughes. Ultimately every fight on the card could go either way other than the main event. Sorry Chael but you're shit talking skills may fool some people, but all I see is a good salesman with mediocre skills and a tendency to get caught in submissions. War Anderson!
I just hope we get to see Silva redeem his old style of embarrasing people and knocking them the fuck out! shit i'll even take another nasty triangle/elbows to the head.
F-T-W
"I think Thiago's TDD is good enough these days to stop/impede Fitch enough."
Really? Yea, his take down defense looked GREAT against GSP. Seriously, what are you basing this statement off of? Has he been working on his TDD that you know of? Have you been training with him lately? Just curious.
Thiago is all about that stand up game. That's where he will win this fight.. but I don't think he's going to be able to stop Fitch from taking him down for 3 full rounds. So, my personal opinion is that if this fight goes the distance, Fitch will get yet another decision win.
My picks for winners: Silva, Fitch(crosses fingers), Guida, Almeida, Dos Santos, and Silva again.
If Sonnen somehow takes the win, him and his big mouth could be a pretty good ratings draw for Spike... vs. Belfort?
And Spider's gonna annihilate Chayol. Badly.
I'm guessing you live in a pretty white area.
