UFC 118 Salaries: James ‘Half-a-Milly’ Toney Gets the Last Laugh

(That’s actually ketchup on James’s head. Randy tackled him so quickly that he didn’t even have time to put down the hot dog he was eating. / Photo courtesy of

The UFC paid out $1,608,000 in disclosed salaries and bonuses to the fighters who competed at UFC 118, according to figures released by the Massachusetts State Athletic CommissionJames Toney‘s whopping $500,000 salary led the payroll, putting him well ahead of fellow headliners Randy Couture ($250,000) and BJ Penn ($150,000). For you math aficionados out there, Toney earned over $2,500 per second in his UFC debut, which ended due to submission at the 3:19 mark of round 1. (Now calculate how much money you make per second at your job. Isn’t that hilarious?)

Keep in mind that the figures below don’t include additional compensation from sponsorships, undisclosed "locker room" bonuses, or cuts of the pay-per-view revenue that some UFC stars have in their contracts, which means that Randy Couture could have theoretically ended up with a bigger paycheck than James Toney. You know, if that helps you sleep at night.

Frankie Edgar: $96,000 (includes $48,000 win bonus)
def. B.J. Penn: $150,000

Randy Couture: $250,000
def. James Toney: $500,000

Demian Maia: $68,000
def. Mario Miranda: $8,000

Gray Maynard: $46,000 (includes $23,000 win bonus)
def. Kenny Florian: $65,000

Nate Diaz: $120,000 (includes $30,000 win bonus, $60,000 “Fight of the Night” bonus)
def. Marcus Davis: $91,000 (includes $60,000 “Fight of the Night bonus)

Joe Lauzon: $84,000 (includes $12,000 win bonus, $60,000 “Submission of the Night” bonus)
def. Gabe Ruediger: $8,000

Nik Lentz: $22,000 (includes $11,000 win bonus)
def. Andre Winner: $10,000

Dan Miller: $30,000 (includes $15,000 win bonus)
def. John Salter: $8,000

Greg Soto: $12,000 (includes $6,000 win bonus)
def. Nick Osipczak: $10,000

Mike Pierce: $24,000 (includes $12,000 win bonus)
def. Amilcar Alves: $6,000

Underpaid: Joe Lauzon still only gets $12,000 to show? What in the french-fried fuck? It’s great that J-Lau picked up the submission bonus; it’s not so great that he’s still working off his indentured servitude from TUF 5.

Overpaid: The Dark Emperor, obviously. In fact, James Toney might be the most overpaid fighter since Tim Sylvia made $800,000 in 36 seconds against Fedor Emelianenko. Also, whatever the UFC paid Nik Lentz for his dreadful wall-’n'-stall performance against Andre Winner in the Spike prelims broadcast, it was too much — especially when you consider that Lentz likely cost the UFC money by turning off viewers who might have been on the fence about buying the pay-per-view. Expect to see him buried in a dark match for his next fight.

That brain dead monkey didn't deserve that much money his first time in the
JaredB- September 3, 2010 at 10:08 am
Joe Silva chose to make that match, it is ultimately some idiot at Spike who chooses what goes on the prelim special.

UFC 117 had better prelim fights and should've got a prelim special instead of this show.

I just computed my earnings per second in a spreadsheet. I'm not laughing that it's rounded down to 0.

Paying James Toney more than Randy Couture is ridiculous...
dranokills- September 2, 2010 at 7:55 pm
fucking mumbles getting half a mil is a joke, and the jokes on us.
way to go Dana now every jack-legged halfass clown who wears oversized clown gloves will want to jump in the octagon....for fucksakes!
for that kinda money I would last longer and put on a much better show....fuck a boxer ever getting in with MMA fights again.
DARKHORSE06- September 2, 2010 at 7:08 pm
I had no idea who JT was before the fight; now that I have seen and heard him in action I have descided to intentionally not give two fucks about this truly truly stupid fuck.

And Dana White dopped about 50% in my esteem-o-meter for paying this jack ass a dime.

I would have rather seen Randy fight his ex-wife.

Dana, you still owe me $50!!!

Whoever picked Lentz vs. Winner

Joe Silva?
JaredB- September 2, 2010 at 3:54 pm
Whoever picked Lentz vs. Winner for a hype show fight is an incompetent boob who should be the actual one getting punished. Lentz outwrestling a decision from Winner is something that could've been seen coming a mile away and they should've put Salter and Miller in the same spot.

Toney secured more than 10,000 additional buys for this event, even if it was just more wishy-washy mma fans who cant resist a good beatdown. The goal was to get a few boxing fans to change over - a worthy cause to pay Randy for a warm up session. The UFC KNEW they would only pay Toney once, why else would you feed him to Randy?

Discussion of athlete pay gets me irritated. Negotiate a contract to your liking accepting that you may advance or fall. Be happy with it when you sign your name. Live up to your contract. End of story. If you want the freedom of more money dont sign a 6 fight deal that will most likely span many years...if you are a retard, GET A BETTER AGENT!

How the fuck does Frankie Edgar, the god-damned LW champion (disputed victory or not), get $48k to show? I'm not saying that BJ was overpaid, but come the fuck on. Then again, your paycheck does coincide at how well you and your management can negotiate. I'm sure that Frankie will get a bigger piece of the pie next time.

Pretty sad pay for some of the guys.
cecils_pupils- September 2, 2010 at 1:04 pm
James Toney's one and only UFC paycheck - 500K
Randy Coutoure's paycheck for handling Mumbles - 250K
Putting an end to the boxing vs. MMA debate - priceless
SnallTrippin- September 2, 2010 at 12:41 pm
@LAS- Money is about name recognition and being exciting in the ring though.
Sakuraba3900- September 2, 2010 at 12:38 pm
i would fight and beat james toney for less... takedown, pass, mounted aokiplata
LAS- September 2, 2010 at 12:37 pm
Given that Joe Lauzon was already 1-0 before opting to go on TUF, it's hard to view him has underpaid, especially since his 7 subsequent UFC appearances have included 6 of his fights being included on a live broadcast and 2 Fight Night headliners. What do most 5-2 LWs expect to make, maybe 20/20 or 25/25? Maynard is 8-0, came off the same season of TUF and is only making 23/23.
SnallTrippin- September 2, 2010 at 12:26 pm
Tony should have just backed up against the cage.
Ballkick- September 2, 2010 at 12:23 pm
I would definately take a Toney beating for 5K,.....and probably put up a better showing, that I mean I would have landed at least one punch more than JT.
howardsternspenis- September 2, 2010 at 12:21 pm
for 500k i would let mumbles and randy violate me anally.
stopdrinkingpee- September 2, 2010 at 12:16 pm
Good call on Lentz. Lack of action has become a real problem with some fighters. Did you all see Old Dad's conversation with John McCarthy, where Big John basically said refs should never stand fighters up from a dominant position? Someone wrote a response slamming lay and pray (as well as wall-n-stall -- Lentz is specifically mentioned) and saying Big John is wrong.

SnallTrippin- September 2, 2010 at 12:14 pm
@Agent: I'm not saying I wouldn't take it- I'm just saying you sound a little too eager. Heh.
agentsmith- September 2, 2010 at 12:07 pm
@ SnallTrippin:

You're projecting, fruity. And do the math, 1% is 5 grand. Don't try to tell me you wouldn't suffer a takedown and an armtriangle for 5K.
Viva Hate- September 2, 2010 at 12:05 pm
For the Toney money i'd take a Marcus Davis beating.
El Guapo- September 2, 2010 at 12:04 pm
Mumbles made more than Randy Couture and BJ Penn COMBINED?? Yikes!

Oh, he's crazy alright. Crazy like a fox.
