UFC 132 Cruz vs. Faber: The Bonuses

For all the grief we give the guy, we owe him a second photo of this submission. (Pic: UFC.com)

There were a score of unofficial bonuses dealt out last night. Tito got to keep his job and shut up his many, many detractors. Cruz evened the scorecards against Faber and avenged his only loss. Chris Leben bounced back from a crippling Gummi Bear addiction to score a vicious 27 second KO victory over Wanderlei Silva. As if that weren’t enough, the UFC handed out a quartet of its official, more financially lucrative $75k bonuses as well.

It was the UFC’s first bout for the Bantamweight strap, and Dominick Cruz and Urijah Faber did their damnedest to put the little guys on the map in their “Fight of the Night” performance. They gave us five full rounds of the high-energy, dynamic style best exemplified by the sport’s lower weight divisions, and in doing so they may have secured a rubber-match in the near future.

He not only needed a win, he needed it against an opponent that few gave him a chance of beating. Tito Ortiz didn’t just earn the victory, he ended the fight in under two minutes and picked up the evening’s “Submission of the Night” bonus along the way. This was a very big win for the former champion, and it felt a little nostalgic to see the old “grave digger” routine once again.

UFC 132’s “Knock Out of the Night” was delivered by Carlos Condit, who earned his third straight bonus courtesy of a flying knee that dropped Dong “Stun Gun” Kim. A few follow up punches on the ground put Kim out just shy of three minutes into the first round. Now riding a four fight win streak with three consecutive stoppages, expect Condit’s calls for a title shot to grow louder.

@Smitty
That's the very top of Mario Yamasaki's head as he's bent over trying to see Tito's hands and Bader's face.

Melvin's KO was just as impressive as Carlos, but Carlos's opponent was a more impressive conquest. So I agree with the KO of the night going to him. It was almost expected for Melvin to KO him.

I'd like to see Tito/Rampage next, I think this fight will sell tickets/PPV's and I think they could book it for the near future.
Wandy needs to maybe entertain 170 div at this point, he seemed small against Leben, like a mini axe murderer, maybe TRT is the answer as he definitely was no stranger to the juice in Pride.
Guillard/Guida needs to happen as well.
Great night of fights, tough night at the bookies.

I think Bader is over-rated however I also think that he was looking far better than Tito was on the feet, Tito hit an awkward punch that knocked him out enough so that he didn't even remember what happened until he woke up in the choke. Lucky shot from Tito and good on him to take advantage. Not often you see someone so happy when he wins. In the end, Tito probobly won't win much as he is just so tight and slow. You have to give it to him though, when he says he lost to top guys it is true (other than Hamill), Rashad beat him then went on to be champ, Forrest beat him but imo only because Tito gassed out, Machida beat him but almost got caught in a triangle when Tito was on his back and then went on to become champ. Tito will never be at the top of the division, however he probobly would sell more tickets than any gate keeper in MMA

What a sad world to live in, where Wanderlei gets Knocked out and Tito "Pumpkinhead" Ortiz wins in the same night.

I am so sad about G-Sots. Condit managed to cheer me back up but oh man what the fuck happened? tito winning was coincidental, you put him against 5 people he can beat and he beats the last one after he's been mentally broken by the champ. GIVE HIM A TITLE SHOT

I actually am slightly happy for Tito, because I could have seen him starring on a TMZ segment on the bad end of an overdose sometime in the near future if he had lost his job. However, there seems to be a lot of "Bader was over-hyped" or "I never thought Bader was very good to begin with" talk. Tito certainly won, and good for him. But this wasn't a three round war that let us really see what each man had to offer, and it doesn't tell us a whole helluva lot about either guy except that Bader was hit on the jaw by a 220lb man who trains every day to throw punches. The truth is, pillow hands or not, if you connect just right, anyone can go down. Bader was a bit overzealous, and perhaps a bit reckless. Good for Tito for the win, but I'd like to see where both guys go from here before passing judgement. I still think Bader has a lot of potential, and Tito will continue to struggle.

OK OK, we done Tito Nut Hugging yet???
Next War Machine will be voted comeback fighter of the year...

Wouldn't it be fucking hilarious if Tito failed his post-fight test for PED's?
It just seems to be what all the cool kids are doing now.
Clyde- July 3, 2011 at 3:35 pm
Well... shit. Did not expect Tito to win that. And look more impressive against Bader than Jones did.

Totally agree with condit for KO bonus, that was nice. I think he needs a win aginst either Fitch or Kos before he gets a shot as GSP though. Assuming GSP beats Diaz, but then I assumed Bader would beat Tito and that didn't turn out so well.
Smitty- July 3, 2011 at 3:09 pm
I just want to know what the hell that is next to Baders right hand......
fightfan- July 3, 2011 at 2:16 pm
I just want to know what Tito does with all those old, premade, postfight trash talk tshirts. You know the ones of Evans, Griffin, Hammil, Machida. He probably had a shitload of them made up b4 every one of those fights.

ALSO...I'll bet Tito is happy he doesnt have to practice the "gravedigger" routine in front of a mirror anymore. After nearly 5 years he finally got to do it again for reals.
mmacanada- July 3, 2011 at 2:06 pm
@Naked rear Poke:

sub of the night = 1
kock of the night = 1
Fight of the night = 2

for a grand total of 4!
Naked Rear Poke- July 3, 2011 at 1:32 pm
Doesn't quartet mean four? I see only a trio of bonuses. Are you saying it's the amount of fighters who got the cash? Me confused, don't use words like quartet!
jimbonics- July 3, 2011 at 1:01 pm
The gravedigger thing seemed rushed and trite, reminding me of when shooter mcgavin finally made a putt in front of a rowdy crowd and goes "Yeah!!" And pulls out his gun and does his signature move all hasty-like.

@AllinYourGrill

I wish Rogan had said to Tito after the fight "Let me tell you how you feel right now."
CaptnJonesy- July 3, 2011 at 12:43 pm
Well your opinion sucks because it wasn't Fatty McCocksucker
AllinYourGrill- July 3, 2011 at 12:41 pm
Let's give it to Tito, one of the greatest light heavyweights of the night.
Fatty McDickbutts- July 3, 2011 at 12:19 pm
Thats bullshit imo Melvin's KO was much more impressive
Deal_the_Seal- July 3, 2011 at 12:05 pm
Gotta post this somewhere... There should be a bonus for worst translator of the night. It would go to Dennis Siver's dude.

Joe Rogan: What do you think have you done to win this fight?

Dennis Siver (in German): My takedown defense was better, my punches came through more precise, I did a few take downs and my defense on the cage was much better. That's why I think I won.

Translator: Next time I will try to improve my takedown defense and altogether I was satisfied.

And so on...
Maine Blazer- July 3, 2011 at 11:18 am
Aww, look at how happy he is!
