‘UFC 137: Penn vs. Diaz’ β€” Live Results & Commentary

Mirko Cro Cop vs. Roy Nelson:

Rd. 1: Nelson misses a wild overhand right early on, while Cro Cop stalks with the left hand cocked. Nelson nails a takedown, bull rush style, and is in Cro Cop’s closed guard. Cro Cop has Nelson’s right arm locked up. Nelson posts his left knee and looks to pass. He lands some body punches, but Cro Cop pops up to his feet; he lands a subsequent belly kick and a short, cracking left hand. Nelson’s right cheekbone looks red. Nelson lands a big overhand right, which Cro Cop counters with a left uppercut. Cro Cop scores with a nice left uppercut in close. In the final 30 seconds, both men let the hands go, but no real fireworks.

Rd. 2: Nelson charges in, but Cro Cop shoves his head back. Awesome. Big right from Nelson, and Cro Cop is pissed! Beautiful striking from Cro Cop: uppercuts and body shots. Nelson is bloody, but he’s still in it. Cro Cop still wants to land that left and is moving to Nelson’s right side. Nelson fires with the right hand, but Cro Cop slips it. Nelson grabs a single, drops Cro Cop, and has side control. He’s pushing down Cro Cop’s right arm and wants a kimura. There’s a lot of meat on Cro Cop right now. Crucifix for Nelson, who’s pounding away, just like he did to Kimbo. Mirko makes it to the bell.

Rd. 3: Nelson throws a body kick and then lands a big straight right. Cro Cop seems to have slowed down significantly. Nelson gets the takedown: back control, ground, pound, that’s all she wrote. Steve Mazzagatti calls it.

Winner: Roy Nelson via TKO

Thanks for the memories — and the highlights — Mr. Filipovic.

@RwilsonR You don't quit seem to grasp the meaning of "reframing" an argument, but no biggie.

Anyway, I understand your argument perfectly. Your simply wrong. BJ, has some of the best slipping and parries in the sport, and no one in MMA even comes close to employing a shoulder roll like Diaz. Any comparison of their defensive styles to Chuck's is just ridiculous and indicative of a lack of understanding. Being a good striker isn't about never ever getting hit, but more about knowning you will get the best of the exchanges.

I will agree that GSP's wrestling, makes his striking more effective. Besides his ability to use shots as feints he often uses wrestling to wear out opponents before engaging in striking. That said I was primarily a grappler for a few years before I really got into striking, so no; I see no "shame" in using all aspects of the game to win. But, it must really require some real mental qymnastics to continually tout GSP's striking as being on the level of BJ or Diaz. It's silly. GSP may very well be the best 170 MMA guy, but do we really have to pretend that means all aspects of his game are individually superior. It's just not reality.

But hey, why keep debating this thing? Wait and see. Remeber who told you first; GSP WILL NOT ENGAGE standing with Diaz. He will go to his wrestling and throw a few on the way in and out. There will be no striking domination of Diaz by GSP, unless he's on his back and you can take that shit to the bank.

^ Reframing the argument? Oh, like trying to make it about politics or Fox News hosts? I was keeping consistent with the argument I had with your stupid post.
And way to misunderstand what I previously said, jackass. I only compared them to Liddell inasmuch as they are willing to keep eyes forward and eat a punch to accurately land a punch. That only works as long as your chin holds up, but it doesn't mean they have great boxing fundamentals. BJ throws nicely, but has poor defense. He always has. GSP has a different style, but he also mixes up strikes, footwork, and head movement much better, and guages distance better, as well. He also adjusts to his opponent's game with greater ease. He isn't the greatest striker in MMA by a long shot, but neither is Diaz. Sure GSP uses his wrestling to win... as though there should be shame in that? His wrestling is mixed in with his striking, which makes his striking more effective, and why he won't have issues in dealing with Diaz. And if you think he only wrestles, you should go back and watch his fights. Watch him against BJ, or Fitch, or Alves, or Kos.
blaphtome- October 30, 2011 at 5:45 pm
@RwilsonR Yeah dude, blah, blah, blah; keep trying to reframe the argument. And no you didnt make the case anywhere on here. Comparing BJ or Nick's striking to Chuck's is utter fuckin' nonsense and anyone who has the slightest clue about striking knows this. You think BJ or Nick's boxing is shit and I think; no I know, you don't know what your talking about and Freddie Roach, Mayweather Sr., and Andre Ward would all agree. Your assessment of GSP's vast skill and talent as a striker borders on some sort of strange man crush rather than a critical or even objective view based on performance. GSP wrestles everyone to the decision, while Diaz beats everyone down with his hands = GSP is the greatest striker ever. This is nonsense and it is your position. Before you start talking about level of competition, let's not forget that Daley was widely regarded as one of the best strikers in the sport before Diaz beat him, STANDING. Again, make your case or STFU.

@ Karma - I generally agree with your last on both Anthony Johnson and GSP. The problem I have with Johnson is that he is inconsistent like Melvin Guillard. No doubt he could beat anyone, but I could also see him losing to a lot of mid-tier guys... and he has. And I would hate to see him get a title shot, because if he were to catch GSP and actually win, it would be awful to have an unprofessional champion who can't consistently make weight for title shots. I suppose the upshot would be that while I could see him catching GSP once, if GSP were given a rematch I don't see Johnson winning that fight a significant percentage of the time.
RwilsonR- October 30, 2011 at 9:51 am
@ blaphtome - I did make the case a few posts up, and much more specifically than anything you wrote. Agree or disagree, fine with me.
I was just pointing out the absurdity of you coming on here to insult other people's arguments, post your argument, and then saying you aren't inclined to argue with anyone about it. If you are so confident that your position is superior to all others, and everyone else is so stupid that you don't want to hear from them, then why don't you go stroke youself off and keep your fucking opinion to yourself. The whole, "I feel the need to tell everyone how stupid their opinions are, and post my unsupported opinion, but warn anyone they better not try to say anything about what I said because they're so stupid" routine is pretty pathetic. And you're telling other people to "grow up"?
ringjoker80- October 30, 2011 at 9:50 am
ufc 137 was a card filled with guys that will never and I mean never in any of the weight classes will ever see a championship belt. bj "i cant beat edgar anyway" penn is done and can have a seat in between couture and hughes as the washed up trio. all the heavyweights suck except for future champ junior dos santos, cain velasquez, brock lesnar, and frank mir period. cerrone is the only one on this card who showed up and did his job but thats edgar's belt. all i know is 138 will be worse. for the first time in ufc history 137 and 138 must be forgotten. all real mma fans will forget...
CarlosConduit- October 30, 2011 at 9:49 am
Funny how Nick appears to have a personality disorder, possibly early signs of schizophrenia (see post-fight press). That and he’s on the Autism spectrum. Diaz is a little like Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man, but with fighting instead of numbers.
edhedicus- October 30, 2011 at 9:43 am
I think Diaz is in for a rude awakening. He was obviously allowing Penn to punch himself out in the first round. He knew he would get tired, hell BJ was winded walking out to the fight!
GSP has just as much cardio, a better jab, and straighter punches. Perfect example of how straight punches trump hooks, watch the Condit v Hardy. Hardy threw that wicked hook clearly before condit threw that straighter punch, and look who was counting the lights.
GSP, too athletic, too strong, too well conditioned, and you know the magician Greg Jackson will have the winning game plan. I will say this, I would say that Diaz will poke GSP in the eye, and that will be his chance.
KarmaAteMyCat- October 30, 2011 at 8:37 am
Now I have said for a long time that Rumble Johnson is that sleeper in the division he can finish anyone at any moment. So if that is what you are implying then we are on the same page for the moment, but don't get comfortable and you can call me a nutt hugger but I like Nick as a fighter and his "GO fuck yourself tpe attitude" is a draw for MMA. That said I personally believe on any given day one man can just have an edge on the other. So Diaz isn't athletic as GSP and he has less body mass but he's taller and his Jujitsu is better and his Boxing is on par with top boxers in the world. Regardless of who wins this fight it's going to be good, I'll end this by saying remember the last time GSP beat up someone he didn't like? He stood and banged his eye shut with a jab that was on par with PacMan people were shocked. Gsp isn't the guy who's normally going to take you down and I think he'll be more ready for that takedown Nick is still evolving. So Great fight coming I can't wait, I'll roll the Dice and take Diaz.
blaphtome- October 30, 2011 at 7:58 am
@RwilsonR. Yours was precisely the type of stupid shit I'd hoped to avoid. Rather than making a fucktard republican/O'reilly style attempt at saying something catchy or cute, why don't you make the case GSP's superior striking or STFU.
Iskander Neptu- October 30, 2011 at 7:54 am
Just contradicted myself there. How i hold down a job or graduated from college is a mystery...
Iskander Neptu- October 30, 2011 at 7:52 am
Rumble Johnson is the only threat to the dude. For when a title shot?? (not soon. nobody wants to c the poster boy get beat up by a giant black guy) how that dude cuts weight i dont know.
Iskander Neptu- October 30, 2011 at 7:46 am
When BJ showed up fat at the weigh-ins, the writing was on the wall: 3-round slap fest.

Whats up with these Hawaians and Newzelanders (Polinesians in general)?! They're impossible to put away. Like the Kenyans and Jamaicans, they have a super power. "heads full of concrete and stuff"

If you TRULY think that GSP wouldnt trample Nick diaz 19 times out of 20.. I dont know how you hold a job or graduated from highschool. This is not GSP nut-huggery, its just plain FACT. GSP may be too saf eand boring, but he is unstoppable. The only to to see him beat up in a cage is to kidnap him and throw him in with the Jedi. But he's too smart for that. The rumour of going to lightweight was BBBRILLIANT... Greg Jackson's behind that one, i'll bet.
Todd M- October 30, 2011 at 7:28 am
^ Dude seriously? How did I not identify their strong points? I didn't mention them full stop, all I said was I wasn't sure if Nick could win. For the record I kinda thought BJ would beat Nick if he finished him early and that was definately a possibility, BJ is a quick starter and finishes people when hurt and Nick can be quite slow to start as we seen tonight. Now as for GSP 'whooping' BJ on the feet, come on man George tired him with wrestling and then connected with a few jabs in the later rounds, hardly a whooping, no where near what Nick did tonight. Keep my name out of your mouth cunt unless u've got something constructive to say.
Iskander Neptu- October 30, 2011 at 7:24 am
GSP has literally TWICE the strength of nick Diaz.

GSP will NOT allow punches in bunches.

GSP will take Diaz down every time, 15 seconds into every round.

" and the winner is ... GSP, 50-45 "

bye bye turd...

(fucking obvious)

I love how Mobile internet is exploding and cage potato is doing everything possible to make their site as non friendly to mobile as they can with these stupid galleries and stupid captchas and stupid multi page articles. Mobile doesn't work well with this shit get with the times retards this site used to be good!
RearNakedSpoon- October 30, 2011 at 5:31 am
@Todd M
How can you claim to be a fan when of both when you clearly couldn't identify their strong points? Or know that GSP gave BJ a "whooping on his feet" before?
Diaz was taller, heavier, longer reach, better cardio, just as much a coconut head as Penn and arguably better ground game. How did people think BJ had a chance?
Chael Sonnens Balls- October 30, 2011 at 2:12 am
With Kongo's win we'll never hear the end of it from GayT

At least we can all be comforted knowing he's still a "straighter-than-straight" cum guzzling douche nozzle.

Hey guys u gotta hand it to Nick, I'm a big fan and I was not sure he could pull it off but he did what no one has done before, gave BJ a whooping on his feet. Such a hard fight to watch they are both my favorites and if BJ really is retiring it is a sad day. BJ is the man, he has bought us some of the best fights in the history of the sport and I've always loved seeing him peform, much respect to the Prodigy I wish him all the best. Also I have to mention Cowboy, cott damn he looked good tonight that switch kick was one of the best I've seen, great stuff and also Bartimus got the KO in the prelims good for him he deserves a big win in the big show.

2 WORDS Matt Serra

Digest that for a second, one haymaker from a guy with a 68" reach took him out. Diaz has a 74" reach
dranokills- October 30, 2011 at 12:07 am
Hated to see Siver lose to that retarded looking cowboy.
hated to see the jap win when it was clear he wasn't even close to winning, thats piss poor judging.
batzilla or whatever his name was with the tats and the rainbow hair was awesome, I like his style.
So sick and tired of hearing about how great Vera was, because he is NOW a curtain jerker or less caliber fighter. Why doesn't HE retire? fuck.
furguson finally put an end to hearing how great currans jits is. he sure is great at defense, but he can't beat anyone....yawn.
FINALLY after the 50th lose in the UFC that pissbag mirko crow-crap is gonna leave. man it is about time. Good job fat boy......but don't call out the champ when you fight like a chump against hasbeens and newbies and nobodys. AND I am so glad I called it.
Another fight I called was Kongo beating meathead. So glad to see it, cause I was tired of hearing how great Matt was when in reality he has beat cans, and finally faced a real opponent in Kongo. he is lucky his nuts don't look like his face.
sadly we come to the last fight, diaz vs penn. I hate em both, I always thought BJ was a titty baby who crys when he loses and says hes gonna tell his mommy on ya. Nick is a retard who throws punches in bunches. I hate em for separate reasons, BUT I expected Penn to win. What I really wanted was for one or the other to be hauled out on a stretcher. I wanted one of the other to wake up having shit their pants. I wanted a finish, instead we got a decision win for prick Diaz....and shocker, cry baby penn took his fucking ball, and went home. well good one douchebag down, but for every good thing there is still a Nick Diaz to deal with.
hey Karma you were right, but guess what? I'm that guy you spoke about....theres no way Diaz can beat GSP. Diaz couldn't finish Penn whom GSP destroyed so bad he couldn't continue the fight.
All in all I sure am glad for the retirements.
oh and all you cunts who are bitching at Ben about the "click here for next page" you people really need to get a life you lazy bastards. It was mentioned in the very beginning that it was done to keep spoilers down for ungrateful cunts.
As for other aspects of this board...YES the captcha is bullshit, and its NOT working. we need an edit button, and we need to get rid of the goddamn spammer bots. Stop being silent Ben and address this shit.
Annnnddddd gnite.
