‘UFC 162: Silva vs. Weidman’ Video Promo — If You Think Anderson Is Going to Lose, You’re in Good Company

Over the past few years, the UFC has used a number of different hooks to lure you into buying Anderson Silva‘s fights on pay-per-view, from building Silva up as a supernaturally-gifted phenom to acknowledging the ridiculousness of his matchups. So here’s a new angle: To hype Silva’s UFC 162 middleweight title fight against Chris Weidman, the UFC has cut together clips of Gray Maynard, Georges St. Pierre, and Rashad Evans talking about Weidman as if he’s the next champ. Indeed, “every fighter out there” apparently thinks Silva is going to lose his belt on July 6th.

Call it trash-talk by proxy. Weidman isn’t speaking for himself in this promo because, 1) having other people do it lends him credibility by association, and 2) the sound of Chris Weidman’s voice has never gotten anybody excited for anything. Not trying to hate, here. Chris is just a soft-spoken, respectful dude who does his talking in the cage. And that’s fine. And that’s why GSP and Joe Rogan are doing the talking for him.

Whether that’s an effective promotional strategy or not remains to be seen, but I think this clip captures the current zeitgeist among MMA fans. Whether it’s because they truly believe that Weidman possesses the skills to knock Silva off his throne, or they’re just getting tired of King Andy’s bloody reign, it feels like public support is leaning hard on the challenger this time.

So who are you picking for Silva vs. Weidman? And why? And are your reasons actually rooted in reality?

GSP is scared and HOPING Weidman wins so he doesn't have to fight AS.

I think Weidman has the tools, but he's probably not going to win. My guess is Anderson will lose sooner or later, but it will be father time that dethrones him and whoever his opponent across the cage is will be the lucky benefactor of the fact that Anderson showed up for a fight and all of a sudden he was old, and the magic was gone.

I still think this may be Anderson's toughest challenge. In fact... I would not be the least bit surprised if Andy boy pulls out with an injury. Weidman is a beast and he won't stop until he gets it to the mat.

Thank God Weidman has had 9 whole fights for Anderson to watch tape on. Gimme a break DFW.

Young guy, strong wrestling, good submission grappler, well rounded; yes I remember Nate Marquardt and I'm guess Anderson does too. Weidman's supposedly dangerous skill set isn't something Anderson has never seen before. His stand up is moot point in a fight with Silva and his wrestling isn't really better than what Silva's already faced. Sure he's a good submission grappler, but he's a brown belt facing a black belt. Silva in 2

weidman only has 9 pro fights, with his most impressive win coming against mark munoz, and i'm supposed to expect him to defeat the greatest martial artist of all time? lol sure that makes sense, lol ya good luck with that one.

silva by first round KO
IgorDzaic- June 17, 2013 at 8:33 pm

drainplugofideas- June 17, 2013 at 5:14 pm
I think Weidman will win this fight. He's got excellent wrestling and ground game. Also he's young athletic and strong. I think he's gonna beat silva in this fight.
Mr_Misanthropy- June 17, 2013 at 5:13 pm
Silva has won more than two of Weedman's full careers IN A ROW. Mostly all title fights, against mostly deserving title challengers. I'll believe it when I see it.

And no I'm not going to count that ROTR Okami bullshit as a loss because nowhere in reality do you get kicked on the jaw and get knocked into stupid land for 20 minutes and your opponent is unscathed and you get declared a winner.
Sopapo- June 17, 2013 at 5:08 pm
@Imnotamoose are you seriously going to compare the stand up of a world class champion who's greatest weapon is his Muay Thai, to a contender who's greates strength is his grappling and took the fight on 2 weeks notice? that's retarded.
RearNakedSpoon- June 17, 2013 at 4:43 pm
UFC 162: Soft spoken vs squeaky voice.
Imnotamoose- June 17, 2013 at 4:31 pm
I know Weidman took the Maia fight on short notice but if you want at look at mutual opponents...

Chris looked like poo in a sloppy kickboxing match against Demian... Anderson was giving him f'ing deadlegs and throwing "kick around my other leg and hit you in the shins, lord Im bored" kicks. All the while slinging insults and playing air guitar.

Sure Chris has a chance and a good one at that of taking it down and beating up Anderson. I just don't see it happening. Weidman is in for a massive jump in competition and I personally don't think he can hang.
LetsBetOnIt32- June 17, 2013 at 4:24 pm
Silva by unanimous.
Thumblaster- June 17, 2013 at 4:22 pm
It's a good thing the soft spoken weidman has gsp doing the talking he's so scary with that tough french accent and all. I will never pick against the spider untill someone beats him.
eatthecage- June 17, 2013 at 4:01 pm
Silva will win with a stunning KO in the face of adversity and once again redefine True Champion.
Hexed79- June 17, 2013 at 2:55 pm
Don't forget Weidman already beat Uriah Hall - the very same Uriah Hall who was ready to beat Silva during his time on TUF.

Can y'all teach me how to make that eyeroll emoticon? June 17, 2013 at 2:49 pm
unless of course you want to count the shit show that was the split decision win over maia... June 17, 2013 at 2:34 pm
Time to get some perspective and try to remember you first instinct when this fight was announced, before you got caught up in the hype train. Chris Weidman has fought NO ONE, wait , munoz, seriously am I supposed to be impressed. explain munoz as relevant in the middleweight scene...Chris is good , no doubt, but he is part of the recent trend of fighters who come in undefeated BECAUSE they have been can crushing on the regional circuit in fights arranged to pad their record so they can get up to the big leagues. He's got potential to be great one day but he is about to get smashed!
Fried Taco- June 17, 2013 at 2:25 pm
After this fight, everyone will be calling him Anderson "The Weidwhacker" Silva.
Sopapo- June 17, 2013 at 2:16 pm
Weidman is the best representant of new school mma at middleweight. Complete fighter. u got Cain at HW, Jon Jones at LHW, Weidman at MW, everyone at LW (that division is so stacked with complete fighters). New breed taking over.
phantom151- June 17, 2013 at 6:04 pm
