UFC 85 Ipecac Bet: Head-to-Head

Ryan “Fightlinker” Harkness has cast his final picks in our UFC 85 ipecac bet rematch; you can check out his take on the Bedlam matchups here. I was a little nervous picking Hughes and Werdum to win because both matches could definitely go either way, but Ryan has set my mind at ease by picking Hughes and Werdum as well (though he picked them to end by stoppage, rather than my decision calls). Of course, there are some notable points of dispute. Such as…

Michael Bisping vs. Jason Day
I said: Bisping by storm.
Ryan said: “I’m all over Jason Day’s nuts. After watching him destroy Alan Belcher, I’m convinced that there’s no way Michael Bisping is gonna be able to take him out. Bisping nearly got taken out by Elvis Sinosic for god’s sake. So I anticipate one round of tenderization and then Bisping getting subbed out on top in the second.”

Marcus Davis vs. Mike Swick
I said: Davis in a wild one.
Ryan said: “Davis has been on an upswing and Swick has been on a downswing. But Marcus hasn’t faced the kind of opponents Swick has, and has turned into a cocky motherfucker to boot. I’m expecting Swick to come in with a smart plan: put him on his back and don’t give Davis a chance to use his hands. This fight is simply too important for Swick to try and trade.”

Matt Wiman vs. Thiago Tavares
I said: Tavares by who cares.
Ryan said: “Everyone’s underestimating Wiman and overestimating Tavares. Tavares is the weakest of the UFC’s Thiago trio, and has a hard time finishing fights. Add the fact that he seemed completely stumped by Michihiro Omigawa (who Wiman pummelled for 3 rounds), and I think he’s just not that great. On the other hand, Matt Wiman keeps getting better. His jiu jitsu was wild and sloppy in his first two fights but in his third he put it all together and wasted his last opponent in three minutes.”

Luiz Cane vs. Jason Lambert
I said: Lambert by Punishment.
Ryan said: “Cane is supposed to be the next big thing at 205. Jason Lambert sucks. Cane knocks people out. Lambert gets knocked out. All of Cane’s fights end in the first round. Jason Lambert sucks.”

Antoni Hardonk vs. Eddie Sanchez
I said: Sanchez by late haymaker.
Ryan said: “Hardonk is a great kickboxer who prefers to use his terrible jiu jitsu. Eddie Sanchez is a self-styled brawler who can’t seem to knock anyone out. I’d say this is gonna be a sloppy fight that will end with Hardonk landing some kind of submission that will have Joe Rogan going ‘Wow, that’s not really how it’s supposed to be done, but I guess it worked’.”

What do you think? Is Ryan going to have to record a video of himself violently purging, or am I? Lemme know in the comments section…

Winners- Hughes, Davis, Bisping, Vera, Leites, Kampmann, Wiman, Carneiro, Cane, Taylor and Sanchez. Those are my Predictions and if they are right, then you would win, unless Ryan picks the right round and method on most of his picks.

The first poster forgot the most important piece of the puzzle. The stupid shit coming out of Mike Goldberg's mouth trumps any and all comments made by anyone even loosly affiliated with MMA. When I hear him talk I'm reminded of a scene from Billy Madison: Mr. Goldberg what you just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard.... Everyone in this room is now dumber from having listened to it.

You can breathe a sigh of relief, Benny G!! That Fightlinker guy must be a closet bulemic... throwing the contest!

i think Hughes is going to beat Alves, its like when everyone thought Rich Franklin sucked because of the way he got demolished by Anderson Silva, same with Hughes and GSP.

I gotta admit im closer to CP's picks, is it me or has FL picked most of the fights to end in sub, how often on the last god knows how many cards have that many fights finished by sub.

As far as the epicac ingesting goes, I think it's a toss up. Interesting how you both figure Hughes still has it, I'm not convinced.

At least your picks seem to have a little bit more of a legitimate reasoning to them as opposed to "Jason Lambert sucks.....Jason Lambert sucks" I mean, it's funny and all but I would be all business if it was me on the verge of puking my guts out!

Wow, FL's picks are fucking rubbish.

I can't think of a single group of fights in recent memory that are more difficult to pick than these.
Myles Kilometers- June 4, 2008 at 8:36 pm
He made some bad picks. I have a feeling you won't be the one doing the yacking.

I mean, Liaudin? Wiman? Day? Sanchez?

He picked too many upsets.

He's done.

Ok both of you guys are dead wrong about hardonk, submission is highly unlikely and i dunno y u would risk doing that lol. Hardonk is gonna KO sanchez mark my words.

I think there is one piece of this puzzle that you guys aren't taking into account, who's reffing this shit?
TheFeniX- June 4, 2008 at 7:47 pm
I wouldn't discount Bisping. He's overrated, but still a tough opponent. Downplaying him at 185 doesn't seem like something I'd put too much stock in.

Swick has all the tools to beat Davis, but he's inconsistent and doesn't seem to analyze how a fight is going too well. He makes some poor choices on how to go about a fight, unless some criteria comes up that makes his brain say "SWICKATINE."

I think Eddie Sanchez is being underestimated. He looked like shit in his fight with Cro Cop, but other than that he's been pretty much on the ball. And as for not being able to knock someone out, he's got enough TKOs on his record to kind of put that to bed even if it's not technically the same thing.

Other than that, I don't have enough of an opinion to make a decision on the other fights, although I'd love to see Matt Hughes lose. Personally, I think both of you guys are insane for taking this bet, but then again vomiting for me isn't an event, it's a process. A terrible one that I will do anything to avoid.

Good luck on all that.

Bah! MMA isn't about who wins or loses fights. It's about the stupid shit that come out of the mouths of Gary Shaw, Dana White, and Tito Ortiz. That and tearing all the refs to shreds for every fight that doesn't end in a tap out.
