(Bundles of ones. That’s how I’d want my UFC bonus money.)
Bonus money winners for UFC 85 took home $50,000 each this time around, down from the $75,000 bonuses handed at UFC 84. It’s still a nice boost in pay, however, especially considering that three of the four bonuses went to prelim fighters.
Matt Wiman and Thiago Tavares garnered “Fight of the Night” honors. Kevin Burns finished Roan Carneiro with a triangle choke to win “Submission of the Night”, and Thiago Alves took home “Knockout of the Night” for his face-smashing antics against Matt Hughes.
Is it me, or did Wiman (and possibly Antoni Hardonk) get screwed out of some money for KO of the night? Alves put Hughes away, and that is impressive because of who Hughes is, but it lacked some of the finality that Wiman’s KO did. He found Tavares’ off-switch and hammered it hard. That seems like it ought to be worth a little something extra, though I doubt he’s complaining. He still went home with a lot more spending money than he expected.

commentsAs for me going to Hughes next weigh-in and and give him my opinion, I'm not sure what that would prove as I scream from the audience so as to be heard that I think he sucks, whats he gonna do come out into the audience and beat me up? ha! you have a vivid sense of stupidity. Is that how your fantasy world works? get a grip, I would have zero fear in doing that, plus the fact that I'm way bigger than him, and I would prolly wipe my ass with him!
Alves should a made weigh, he didn't, get over it. it wasn't very professional , and he paid for it professionally like all the pros do, they get fined for not doing their job correctly.
Fuck, even Dana White didn't bitch about it, and he is an asshole ....so that makes you, what? worse than an asshole? Yeah that's what I am thinking!
Just to give some perspective, I was recently involved with a smaller promotion where the headliner called before hand, and said he could not make weight and he, the organization, and his opponent ageed to a catch weight. TRAP. While one guy has been working his ass off (cardio, food/carb reduction) to get to within reach of cutting to his weight, the other has been training and eating in a way that is comfortable and conducive to maximum performance. One guy has worked his way down to 164-164 (155 wt class), the other is hanging out in the mid to high 170's knowing he is just gonna get a 165 catch weight (as some of you may not know it is easier to cut more weight when you are heavier). Besides the actual weight there are the issues of greater levels of dehydration, and glycogen depletion. The effects these factors have on performance is far greater than someone who hasn't experienced it can understand. I have comfortably cut 14lbs. before, but ask me to cut 4 more; shiiiiiit. Law of diminishing returns, that shit starts to get really hard. Needless to say one guy essentially dwarfed the other at weigh ins, stepped in the cage with big fat full muscle bellies and kicked the guys ass in first minute of first round. BULLSHIT! Unwillingness to face a man on even terms is a form of COWARDICE.
Anyhow, still hate Hughes and glad he got his ass kicked, but don't think so highly of Alves right now either.
Alves should have made weight - period!
P.S. Go buy some spelling lessons you clown.
"your precious hughes got DESTROYED, just like he will from here out cause he doent have ANY fight left in him its obvious."
I've been sleuthing the Cagepotato forums for a while now and whereas Hughes may still have some fans, I don't think I've heard one person talk about him in glowering terms like "precious". If anything, I've heard more shit talked about him than anything.
Most people don't care that he lost. Alves could have been fighting the Stalin and people here would probably still be pissed he missed weight. This is because he bills himself as a pro fighter. And professionals full-fill the terms of their contract.
The way I see it Dana owes the Hitman 50 large
regardless of it being his job to cut weight the facts are he didnt, he got fined for it, he took it like a man, he went out he destroyed hughes, and here we are you whiny beotches. ha!
yeah it must be his excuse, matt hughes got beat down cause dude weighed about a phone book heavier, yep thats it, surely it wasnt that hes washed up or that alves was just the better MMA fighter, nawwwww. Its as onvious as the nose on your face and you cant see it. thats a YOU problem.
enjoy my emoticons...thank you! :) ;)
I'm not even a Matt Hughes fan, but Alves should have made weight, would it have changed the outcome? no, but that's his fucking job, shit, even I can throw on a sauna suit to lose a couple pounds, and I'm a chubby bastard.
also, please stop using emoticons(sp), they are annoying, thank you

I do agree with you guys on 1 thing, he dont deserve a title shot, he didn't beat anyone to deserve it yet :) all he did was beat a washed up has-been called matt hughes, that dont mean much.
By the way they mentioned that thiago was gonna be fined for not making weight, cause THATS all you can do to a fighter who doesnt make weight, and YES if hughes had refused to fight he woulda looked like the puss he really is, as it turned out he got dominated by a kid with a bad wheel.......yeah, he needs to retire to sheephearding and broke-back mountain 2.....oh I hear they are gonna make an opera of that, I bet thats where matt is going :)
and all you guys who feel thiago insulted you fan-boys needs a reality pill, you just saw history, and you are to busy whining about something that the UFC takes in stride and handled in house, get over it. your precious hughes got DESTROYED, just like he will from here out cause he doent have ANY fight left in him its obvious.
"You are way to much into these fighters personal life, and you care waaaaaaaay to much if you are insulted……fuck it man did you lose money?"
Yeah, I did lose money. The fact that Alves only has 2 prefight responsibilities (make weight and don't juice) and he failed one of them is a huge insult to the fans and the opposing fighter. If Matt Hughes had backed out of the fight, he would have looked like the asshole, and he would have been called a pussy for ruining the card. Fighters go through immense pressure to fight injured and fight opponents that don't make weight. In every sport, the fans take an interest in the player's personal lives. That is a part of becoming a professional athlete and celebrity.
"So what he goes clubbing picking up chicks, you think any of the other fighters are perfect? get a grip! Chuck Lidell is a man-whore, and flabby as hell looking yet puts people to sleep with one punch."
Chuck does go out clubbing and pick up chicks, and it caught up with him. Rampage crushed him, and he's still another fight away from getting a shot at his title again.
It hurt to even roll hard. He shouldn't have gotten ANY bonus at all, they should have given that to Hughes as well. The begging for a title at the end was ridiculous!..'I been a good boy!' Are you kidding, dinged for diuretics and then a miss of 4 pounds. He should slide right back down the list, if not up to his own weight class. Hughes cuts MASSIVE weight to get to 170, at least as much as Alves, he's never had a problem with it.
I cant believe i'm saying this but I felt like cheering for Matt Hughes because Alves didn't respect him enough to make weight.
Enough bitching though, I think Wiman should have won KO of the Night but because he won fight of the night I reckon it should have gone to Hardonk, I even would have given it to Cane over Alves.
I lost $45 dollars yesterday. If I am a paying customer I can be insulted at an unprofessional miss at a weight cut.
Alves could have got his ass on a bike with some sweats on and rode it til he was at weight. Its just an excuse.
Hardonk should have at least got a bonus for his nice KO of sanchez last night. The Matt Wiman fight was the fight of the night for us.
