MMA Video Tribute: 9 ‘Falling Tree’ Knockouts

UFC 90 Bonuses + Videos

What a bizarre night. If, like me, you can’t quite make sense of what you saw last night, the video above gives you another chance to sort through it all. What does it say when Bruce Buffer provides more intensity than the main event?

Bonus awards for UFC 90 were $65,000 a piece and it played out like this:

Fight of the Night: Sean Sherk and Tyson Griffin
Submission of the Night: Spencer Fisher
KO of the Night: Junior Dos Santos

Awarding bonuses this time around must have felt like a strange process. There were only two submissions (Thales Leites‘ choke of McFedries was not impressive enough somehow) and one knockout, and picking a fight of the night had to be a lot like picking a favorite Arena League football team. Apparently 15,359 people showed up to be disappointed by the most unsatisfying UFC in recent memory, with a live gate totaling $2.85 million.

Dos Santos’ vicious knockout of Werdum is after the jump, along with the so-called fight of the night and more.

Fabricio Werdum vs. Junior Dos Santos

Sean Sherk vs. Tyson Griffin

Thales Leites vs. Drew McFedries

The refs are getting out of hand. The mark of a good ref is not knowing he's in the cage until he's needed. These fucking guys...."come on guys"..."let's go guys"..."get busy guys". Were they overseeing an MMA bout....or directing a gay porno? Fucking annoying! I'm just glad I didnt pay to see that slop "main event"! Silva was acting like a jerkoff. Stop the fucking bowing and extended hand to help Cote up and all that bullshit. We get it...your a "class" guy. Now fight you coconut head mother fucker! Someone should have thrown a couple baseball bats with nails and trash can lids into the cage! WTF!

I agree with FimDrunk. Koscheck-Alves and Sherk-Griffin were great fights. Both Sherk and Griffin are so technical, I love that. Those guys are really good and it was such an evenly matched fight. As for Koscheck-Alves, I'm amazed at Koscheck's ability to recover so quickly from some of those shots that obviously had him hurt. He has improved SO much over the last couple years...I think another year or two and he's going to be one of the best, if not the best. He rubbed me the wrong way on TUF but I've got to respect his dedication and growth as an MMA fighter. Now, WTF was up with Silva? Seriously? Before the fight started I was telling everyone what an outstanding individual he was, how respectful and nice he was. Then he comes out and...hell, I don't even know how to describe his behavior! In my opinion, Cote blowing his knee out was the best possible ending. Here's how I see it. Silva's antics were extremely disrespectful to say the least. He showed absolutely NO respect for Cote or the fans. Lets be honest EVERYONE was excited for the fight because they believed Cote was going to be a human punching bag for Silva. No one believed the fight would go past the first round and everyone was looking forward to another Franklin style beating. Cote was trying his hardest. He came to fight. If Cote had actually caught Silva with a KO punch then Cote would have the title but he would have been robbed of a true victory because everyone, including himself, would be talking about how he didn't really fight the "real" Silva. Cote would have been fucked if he won the fight because of the goofying off Silva was doing. If Silva would have waited until later in the 3rd, or maybe the 5th who knows, before he opened his can of whup-ass, then his earlier antics are even MORE disrespectful to Cote. Basically he was saying "you are absolutely nothing to me...I can kill you whenever I please". That is fucked up. People don't pay to see Anderson Silva, they pay to see what he does. He didn't do shit last night. I wish the UFC had an interpreter (sp?) so we could hear what Silva's corner was saying. I hope they weren't condoning his behavior. I'm surprised by the lack of press regarding Silva's "show". That dude better provide an explanation soon.

Sherk and Griffin was a nice fight, it could go either way. Sean rocked Griffin and vice versa. Awsome standups. Alves thought Kosheck was gonna be an easy fight, but he had his hands full. Good fight that one too. The champ did what he did, he defended his title by be smart and exploting cotes weaknesses. Say what u want about Silva being disrecpectful. he did good against cote and had him rocked like 2 times but didnt finishing him, the fourth round would have been Silva's, no doubt.

I like the way silva behaves. He uses alot of psycological factors of the octagon. Like when the crowd starts booing and he drops his hands. Cote had to be getting so frustrated. No one else does this.

LOL @ Anonymous, your such an ass-hat. Show me one other Silva fight, title defense, were he did any of that crap. Cote, in all honesty wasn't even a real contender, yet Silva felt the need to test Cote for 3 rounds? Please, he was fucking with him and everyone knows it. What has Cote done that would, in your opinion mr. vaginal discharge, require Silva to be so "cautious" with Cote? When Silva took the belt from Franklin, one of the worst beatings I've ever seen, he didn't "feel" him out by running circles around the cage and waving his hands at his opponent like he was trying to get rid of a particularly sticky bugger. No, especially for 3 rounds. Anonymous, you are a nuthugger plain and simple. You have a stiffy for Anderson and will defend anything he does therefore your posts are biased and will not be considered. Oh and FYI you stain, WTF is a "wannabe mma fan"? Silva wasn't showboating.... Cmon this is a title fight. The belt is on the line. Silva isn't going to be a moron, rush into action (because everyone in the US gets bored of tactical fighting) and get KO'd by a lucky punch. He's being extremely careful and doing what he thinks is necessary to win. He's never fought someone past the 2nd round in the UFC so he was pulling out all the stops to make sure he'd win. You have to admit he bashed Cote up pretty bad with some combos and the guy didn't look dazed at all. On the other hand I feel pretty bad for Cote. He definitely deserves a rematch. And his ACL snapping was sickening... That's happened to me before and it's feels like your leg is fuckin bendin all the way in a wrong direction. I could actually feel the snap and FUCK it hurt. It surprisingly doesn't take much to injure it. Just too much pressure with your footing in a wrong way and BAM torn/snapped ACL.

Round 1 : Silva Round 2 : Cote I want to see a rematch. Silva was hesitant to engage due to Cote's power and his movement. Cote can take a punch and KO punch back when Silva gives his punch and ends up on the inside. Alves/Koscheck was a good fight, as well as Griffin/Sherk. Maynard gets the job done, just keep him in the undercards until we absolutely have to see him.

When he finally someday catches a great shot and get KTFO, Rogan will say "Anderson Silva gets knocked out better than anyone in the sport. He's probably the best in the world at being knocked out. Unbelievable. He trains with some of the greatest glass jaws in the business and he's in a class by himself. This guy is a get-knocked-out machine. I think Silva was cautious of Cote's power and that's not a dis to Anderson, it's a complement. It's not just Anderson's physical abilities that make him a world champ and possible pound-for-pound #1, he's also a very SMART fighter! It would have been totally stupid for him to underestimate Cote's punching power, and he didn't. Cote deserves a lot of credit as well. He lasted longer than anyone including the odds makers thought. His chin kept him in the fight and his corner did an amazing job keeping him focused. Mark DellaGrotte (spelling?) gave Patrick awesome advice and kept him pumped up between rounds. DellaGrotte proved why he is a world class corner/ trainer by helping Cote believe in himself and providing insight into the Spider's fighting habits. It's a shame that the fight ended that way, but that's the reality of the fight game.

LOL, thanks I'm flattered. I'll be sure to post novels from now on just to annoy you. Oh and thanks for enlightening me about Silva's "surgical" game plan. If Silva would have KO:ed Cote in the first round it everyone would have loved the card. I do admit, I did feel robbed by the anti-climatic ending. Also, it was weird not hearing Rogan's commentary. Like UFC Fan, you are one of the reasons MMA is notorious for attracting hicks, little molested boys and dumbasses, and another causative reason as to why MMA finds it hard to achieve credibility in a market already saturated with differing combat sports. Stupid fuck. And doesn't the Silva/ Cote match reveal that MMA fans are fickle as shit, with no understanding of the sport whatsoever? He hit Cote with the same sort of shots that dropped Leben and Franklin, and Cote was relatively unfazed. Hee knew he'd have to work it for a bit longer, but unfortunately we all know what happened. What's really unfortunate is that Cote will likely as not NOT get another title shot. His chances at the title blew up with his knee.

Why does that even matter if he was just messing with him. I had the first two rounds going to Cote because Silva was doing some Billy Idol shit and dancing with himself. Anderson Silva did not impress me in the first two rounds and it looked like his ass was dancing on hot coals. Plus, I called the Dos Santos fight. I shoulda put 100 down on him on bodog. Overall kind of a boring night. I feel bad for Cote blowing his knee out. I think he could have possibly took Silva to a decision.

P.S.- I know nothing about mma either, I just jumped on the silva band wagon and felt his large dick in my anus. God I'm a douche and just won't admit that silva was disrespecting Cote and that if cote's arms were an inch longer silva would be ktfo in the first 20 seconds. Honesty though shinbone you're a fucking dumb cunt. Phunnybonz is right and he's made you look really uneducated about the fight game. Obviously fighters will get ''surgical'' but what silva was doing was basically trying to make cote mad so cote would press the action and silva could back peddle work off his jab and counter. It's like a nigger version of chuck liddel they like to counter and cote was being smart. But seriously you're going to wave your hands in the guys face for 2 rounds? He reminded me of kalib starnes for awhile there. Fuck he was runnin track LOL. What a douche silva is, he try's too hard to be classy. @ cr_trinity, you wouldn't by chance be related to shinbone or anonymous would you? You're their younger retarded brother right? You should change your name to ShortBus. Your comment barely makes any sense at all and I'm being generous. What does Anderson Silva show boating have to do with Anderson Silva striking Cote? Nothing. When Silva is actually fighting he's outstanding and when i say fighting that includes feeling out your opponent and testing the waters. I never questioned Silva's striking power or Cote's chin so your comment is pointless. According to Yahoo sprots, even Silva's corner was yelling at him and asking WTF he was doing. Dana White, who I'm not fan of, even expressed surprise and was scratching his bald head over Silva's antics like you lovingly fondle Silva's Brazilian sack.
  51. Big M Says:

OK, to everyone denouncing Silva because he was inactive think about this. In his other defenses and fights his opponent pressured him and actually attempted to attack, Cote was stalking him down and throwing lazy hooks and (decent) leg kicks. Silva had no major opportunities to counter, and when he did, he scored (knee, switch kick, jab down the middle) and if you cannot understand that maybe you should watch a simpler sport, like handball or something. Silva could not have possible been scared about Cote's supposed power because although he might have some, he is so slow he would never be able to land anything, evident by Silva's fluid defense. Silva was clearly attempting to get Cote to throw, i mean he did offer his chin, and walk around with his hands at his side. You call it showboating, I call it strategy. Cote was just as inactive as Silva was but at least Silva had a purpose. He has nothing to prove.

So it was a weird and boring night. And I get that Silva was measuring Cote during his stupid dancing but c'mon Silva, show some respect towards your opponent. I too was telling my friends how humble Silva was being from Brazil and all but he really let alot of fans down. I'm still a Silva fan after this fight and still think no one can beat him right now but that was just crap. I agree with a previous post 'bout if Cote's arms were an inch or two longer he would of knocked Silva out or at least 'caused some serious damage. Cote's injury was unfortunate and just makes u wonder what if? The only reason it went as far as the 3rd was because Silva kept dancing but Cote took alot of damage and still held his own, unlike everyone Silva's fought in the UFC. Everything said and done...awesome event....big let down. Can't wait for Silva/Cote 2.

His new-found-bullshit reminds me of Frank Shamrock in the early UFC days when Frank "retired" with the belt. Now I am a fan of whomever fights Silva. He needs a reality check. Silva toyed with Cote, end. Cote had nothing for Silva. And he did some of the same shit against Rich Franklin. The bottom line is that Cote was timid, gun shy, and content to just get punched in the face for five rounds in order to not look completely retarded. You see, certain fighters want to win, Cote wanted to not get totally embarrassed. That was his goal for the night. There is no need for a rematch, we saw who the better fighter was.

JP, I'm glad that you have proven yourself to be a fairweather fan and a complete putz. You act like he didn't dance all over Rich Franklin while ol' Ace tried desperately to wing punches at the champ. It was only a matter of time until Silva won, if a dominant performance punctuated by playful movements is enough for you to jump off of the bandwagon, then maybe you should be a fan of a different sport, you insignificant little twit. How did Cote gain fans? He didn't throw anything, he didn't commit to anything, he just sat there and got picked apart. You can't expect to win a fight if you don't throw, especially if you have a negligible ground game. Silva was trying to lure him in and get him to commit to a punch, it isn't a new tactic. But hey, what can you expect from the kind of person who thinks and talks about Rogan and Goldberg mutually masturbating?

"This fight instantly made silva go from one of my top 5 fighters…. to just above Kalib Starnes." The above comment is exactly what I love about Cage Potato comments. When you win as often and as convincingly as Anderson Silva has done, rather than earn a little benefit of the doubt from fans, you just set yourself up to be vilified for a less than stellar performance. The difference between this fight and that Starnes one is that whenever Cote did more than throw lazy hooks or jabs, then Silva responded, while Starnes rarely, if ever, pressed the action. The fact is that Silva was never in any danger, he was more accurate and the strikes that landed were more effective and punishing. Whether you consider the hand and footwork to be showboating is a personal preference, but the same ones that are shouting the loudest about this fight are also the ones who would be calling Silva washed up if he had waded in and gotten caught with a hard shot and knocked out. I think its a shame that Cote was injured and I hope he's ok. It would have been interesting to see how the fight would have been in the later rounds. He fought a game fight but he doesn't have the speed or quickness and he was unable to do any damage in the clinch.

Hey jameson since you are so fucking smart, why is it that cotes "negligible ground game" was so bad yet Silva didnt want any part of it? was cause hes scared of "negligible ground games" or maybe its cause on the ground you cant dance and run, and act a complete fucking ass? Silva acted like a douche, and should apologize to everyone for his stupidity.

So I guess Ali was a douche too right? He only did what anderson silva did in every fight he had. Get off the spyders back. I honestly believe that if Cote doesnt get hurt at the start of the 3rd round that nobody would be talking all of this shit about silva. He would have been tired of playing around and unloaded on the predator finishing him in usual anderson silva fashion.

@Anonymous I am sure the trailer park comments more closely resemble your life than they do mine, as for me being a nobody and needing to grow up I am successful in life and own my own home at the age of 28. I am sure that is more than you can say for yourself. And how did Anderson not live up to expectations? because he didnt knock Cote out in the first? Or because he had the audacity to allow the fight into the third round where Cote could not continue, seems to me Cote is the one who did not live up to expectations. As for the rest of your stupid comments I wont even respind to them, its like an old joke I once heard about winning in the special olympics and arguing on the internet. Have a nice life asshole.

My cheap Irish ass is SO GLAD that I didn't drop the 50 bills on this fight. Yea for cheapness! WTF is up with the Siva/Cote match? I get the feeling that Silva was playing it safe to not take any damage so he can finish his marathon sprint towards retirement. As much as I admire Silva for being smart and leaving at the top of his game, if Saturday's fight is any indication of the style in which he plans to leave, ...DON'T DO ME ANY FUCKING FAVORS! Worst. Silva. Fight. EVER! And to all those haters who love to trash Machida for running away, I ask: "Did you see anything different in Siva's fight?" Half the time Silva was in reverse and dropping his guard more times than Dana drops F-bombs! Wha' happen'!?

first off jameson is a moron, when exactly did he pick him apart. i mean most of the fight he was backing up, sure he hit him with a few good shots but cote hit him with a few good ones in a couple of the short rare exchanges. I believe cote did well and held his own, he took the shots that he got like they were nothing, the same shots which have knock out many opponents of silva's. I have never been a fan of silva's just dont like him. it was an unfortunate injury and hopefully cote gets another shot when he is healed and 100%. and teereks why would you say fuck canada, you must not realize how much canada does for the united states but that has nothing to do with the fights so w/e. also why and the fuck is this called a TKO dumbest fucking thing ever should have been a no contest the fight wasnt even half over and cote was injured he didnt get get beat by silva or anything complete bullshit. anyway very dissappointing fight overall ok fight card kos vs alves was a good fight as was sherk and griffin.

Onan, I agree with most of what you said and I think it was well put. OBI, I think at times during the fight Silva was being evasive in a tactical way but I don't think it's true for all of the fight. The major point I'd like to bring up regarding Silva compared to Lyoto, or Ali or anyone else that has been brought up as showboating, is that for Lyoto - being evasive is how he ALWAYS fights. Ali did showboat but he did it ALL the time, and no I didn't like it then either. The way Silva behaved last night was not characteristic of how he normally fights. This is what I think. If you don't give a shit what I think, stop reading now. I still like Silva and think he's the best. I think he's a really nice guy and he's sincere in that. I also think that last night he didn't intentionally mean to be disrespectful. I think that he was being playful and was hoping to "entertain" the fans. I think he had good intentions it just didn't go over well. Ultimately, it was Cote in the octagon with him and if Cote doesn't complain that Silva was disrespectful then that's that and the rest of us can STFU. I will say this though, I doubt we'll see that kind of style from Silva again.

I agree that silva's antics were psychological warfare intended to get cote off his game...that said, i think it went beyond good sportsmanship no matter how effective it can be...when guys like koschek engage in getting their opponents off their game mentally, they're hated and considered douchebags...when rashad evans engaged in such behavior on TUF it was looked upon as being basically bush league antics...and furthermore silva seems to pride himself on honor but at select times he shows absolutely none...a lot of his fans seem to turn a blind eye to this...it just takes attention away from what a unbelievably skilled fighter he is and puts it towards the negative, which this sport does not need right now from one of its best

If I see one more person say that AS was being disrespectful by offering PC a hand getting up I'm going to go out that choke the piss out of the first person I see, so long as it's not my 80 yr old neighbor...lol....I'll just kick her in the shin...but what the hell, we all know AS as the most respectful fighter in the game by far, all he was doing is showing that great amount of respect. The fight, I don't have answers for that, I think could of been that he wanted the fight to last a bit longer than most of his and was taking it easy the first few rounds then would lay him the fuck out in the third or fourth....cause lets face it folks anytime he did get off he got off so much quicker than PC also he's so god damn elusive PC wouldn't of hit him very often the whole fight. I almost think he wanted it to go a bit longer and was afraid if he hit it too many times one of those strikes might of put pc out just like most all other fighters he's faced.....that would be fact, he's put people out in no time flat....no way was he being disrespectful or trying to take the piss at pc, and specially not show boating he's done that in all his fights, check them out....it's to throw of the other fighters rhythm and timing.....god damn how somones opinion changes when they don't put on a great fight they were expecting. Bullshit.....AS is the most respectful fighter in the game period.

This card left me with a major case of blue-balls but I must admit that it did 3 things to me that I never thought would happen: 1) I found myself rooting for Sherk. Never dreamed I'd type that sentence. 2) I found myself rooting for Koscheck. Never dreamed I'd type that sentence. 3) I found myself wishing A. Silva would stop acting like a epileptic moron and get violent. He's always been a bit of a showboater even back in his Pride and Cage Rage days, (was it in his fight with Curtis Stout that he intentionally dropped his hands and let Stout wail on his chin?) but last night was way, way, way overdone. He crossed a line. Those of you saying, "That was his gameplan, he was trying to confuse Cote. You don't know anything about MMA!" are cracking me up. Silva's always done stuff like he did last night, just to a much lesser degree. It's not a gameplan, it's typical Silva quirkiness. Silva is a genuinely nice guy and I don't think he was trying to disrespect Cote as much as he was trying to "put on a show." Obviously, some of you enjoyed it. I didn't. I like Anderson and always enjoy it when he mixes in a little showmanship (I thought his bobble-head dancing in his second fight with Franklin was hilarious)... but 2 entire rounds of showing off? Ugh. I hope he brings his briefcase and gets back to business next time he enters the Octagon.

@ Phunnybonz "OBI, I think at times during the fight Silva was being evasive in a tactical way but I don’t think it’s true for all of the fight." Agreed, but frankly, based on past experience, Silva had Cote sized up and measured at the one minute mark. Maybe I'm wrong, but Silva could have pressed the fight and taken Cote out pretty much anytime after the 1:30 mark of the first round. That's just my opinion. Silva was being evasive in a tactical manner, but why? He had Cote. Nothing against Cote. He came to fight and he gave his best. But frankly, Silva is a better fighter than Cote. "The major point I’d like to bring up regarding Silva compared to Lyoto, or Ali or anyone else that has been brought up as showboating, is that for Lyoto - being evasive is how he ALWAYS fights. Ali did showboat but he did it ALL the time, and no I didn’t like it then either. The way Silva behaved last night was not characteristic of how he normally fights." Damn straight it wasn't characteristic! Dude, I understand. Machida is "characteristicly evasive". That's his style. It works for him, so why would he change it? I guess my point was, people bash Machida for the same style of fighting that Silva displayed. Obvoulsly, it's effective. I was really just trying to draw a comparison to Machida. As far as "showboating" goes; sorry, Silva offering the hand was a total disrespect to Cote. There was nothing friendly about that. Please IMMEDIATELY refer to the Silva vs Lutter bout where Lutter was on his back trying to lure Silva to the ground and Silva responded with a a foot stomp. IMO, he was trying to embarass Cote into standing back up and playing the game Silva wanted to play. Total control tactics. Anyone who thinks that Silva was offering a "hand of friendship" to Cote and being "gentlemenly" to Cote, go here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jsw3kILVH_c Check out the 4:40 mark and you'll see what I mean. Overall, it was a really weird fight. That wasn't a version of Anderson Silva that I have ever seen before. I may not be the Nostradamus that "Mayhem420" is, but something was behind Silva's approach to this fight and I'm really curious to find out what it is. I'm just shooting in the dark, but Silva proved that he can hurt the UFC as much as he can help them them. Think about it.

Anderson Silva now equals Kalib Starnes...running around the ring like some gay hair dresser. Sure, he is a much better fighter than Cote, but what the hell was that? If he is lacking motivation to fight, to defend his title, then he should retire. Hell, Cote won the first round, the second round was a toss up but probably Silva's.
