UFC 96 Bonuses and Videos

('Page vs. Keef. Props to MMALinker.)

After a wild, occasionally bizarre night of action which once again proved that weak-on-paper cards often turn out to be the most entertaining ones, the UFC released $60,000 end-of-night bonuses to UFC 96's standout fighters. Taking home the extra cash are...

Fight of the Night: Quinton Jackson and Keith Jardine, who put on a surprisingly competitive three-rounder in the main event; in fact, the fight was one of the few matches on the card that wasn't a one-sided squash.

Knockout of the Night: Matt Hamill, obviously, for his Cro Coppian head-kick obliteration of Mark Munoz.

Submission of the Night: No bonus was given out, even though Tamdan McCrory did technically make Ryan Madigan tap due to strikes. We'll let you know if he decides to file a complaint with the athletic commission.

UFC 96 drew a very-impressive 17,033 spectators to Nationwide Arena, for a gate of $1.8 million.

After the jump: The Hammer's nasty KO, Carwin's ownage of Napao, the Brown/Sell fiasco, and Kendall Grove's job-saving beatdown of Jason Day.

(Hamill vs. Munoz)

(Carwin vs. Gonzaga)

(Brown vs. Sell)

(Grove vs. Day)

ah,first

nice videos, good night, gj carwin

We need a volunteer to start the petition to remove Jardine from the UFC. He needs to take his Lucky Charms and get back underneath the bridge. Hunched over MF'ing troll. We need athletes in the UFC, not hacks.

Go fuck yourself JPfighter.

GJ Carwin, although he almost got his ass handed to him. What's with the HW division? the UFC probably has the best in the world and it's weeeeeeaaaakkkkkk. Start eating your wheaties kids, and forget college football. Lots of opportunities to make some reasonable money, and it'll only get better.

I don't think the Brown/Sell stoppage was unwarranted, just a little awkward. Sell didn't look like he had his head in the game really.

And while Jardine could be better than many of the next 20 guys waiting to get into the LHW division, he consistently looks like bottom of the totem pole - sure a lucky punch might get him up a notch, but he looks a bit like a hanger-on.

good stuff, thanks for the vid links boys. Good to see Hammil/Grove/Carwin all walk away with knockouts. I'm a big fan of Kendall.

My thoughts:
Yves Lavigne has apparently been watching "How to referee MMA Fights" by Steve Mazzagatti. Carwin KTFO's Gonzaga with a freakin arm-puch! WTF?!?!?!

I don't think Sell was gonna pass the "What the Fuck?" test on that first knock down.

I think last UFCs rash of early stoppages was still fresh in Yves head. Its hard to blame the guy when there is such a fine line between stunned and KOed, but you gotta go with your first reaction. The worst that could happen is that you spare a fighter additional punishment. I guess you could get fired, but hey...it's a seekers market...right?

That shit Yves pulled with Brown/Sell was crazy. He stepped in and physically seperated the fighters, stopping the fight. You CAN NOT restart them at that time. That being said, I would rather he restart them so we don't have to hear all the "I was fine" BS from Sell. And what a douche for trying to get some mic time while Brown was being interviewed.

Funniest Phrase of the Night: $60,000 was awarded to Joe Rogan for his hilarious quote: "Carwin's in trouble" LAWL

Bum Fights, Whens dream gonna be on??

Not that I didn't have respect for Matt Brown before this fight but I have much more now. He was looking out for the safety of the the other fighter (Sell) more than the Ref. This fight was clearly over and he didn't want to hurt Sell. Props to Matt Brown.

Some sweet fights! Especially that win for Carwin, Gonzaga was just warming up for some severe steam rolling. Great punch. Hamill is looking good, although I believe his next match up should be with a more substantial all-round fighter, he's clearly been hard at work.

@JPFighter - I agree dude, Jardine looks sketchy as fuck. Thats without taking into account the fact that he could pass as an 80 y/o woman...

I agree with JPFighter...Jardine looks like a 6 year old white belt...no technique what-so-ever....

@ UFC fan....

Go fuck yourself....you'd get more pussy....

Thanks, CP. You just renamed my punk band. We are now called "Cro Coppian Head-Kick Obliteration".

Too bad rampage didnt even deserve the win. Jardine blew Quintons legs apart all fight and landed more aside from the two knockdowns. I dont see how you can give a guy a win for getting beat up the whole fight exept for 2 knockdowns he managed to pull off.

On another note i like rampage to so nothing against him getting thw W.

Exactly UFC fan. Jardine may not be spectacular, but he is a really strong fighter. He has his slip ups but he's not Vera either. When you have a Jardine fight, you never know if he is going to f someone up, go 3 competetively or get ko'd. But 996.7% of the time, the fight was pretty good. So Go Fuck yourself JPFighter.

bitch, jardine would rape your throught

Gonzaga out in the first round?!!!! My bracket is busted already!!!! Not awesome baby!!!

Fuck Rampage and Rashad's staredown got me pumped!I really hope we get to see that fight asap

I see we have a few Jardine huggers here, and that's okay. The fact is, this sport will not continue to progress with guys like him on PPV cards. The sport of MMA needs athletic, multi-faceted fighters that are dynamic and skillful. It's nothing personal, I'm sure Jardine is a good guy, and apparently cuddles frequently with Nipples and UFC Fan. If Dana wants to continue to move the UFC forward in a progressive fashion, there is no place for hacks like Jardine. Frankly, he is the caliber of fighter that belongs with the smaller promotions. If you have a PVR, take a chance to watch some of his technique in slow motion. Very entertaining.

@ STFU
Jardine didn't land half as many leg kicks as Griffin did. What other damage did he cause on Rampage. He got a couple good hits in, and that's it. I don't really care for Jardine, but I do think he's a pretty good fighter. He for sure lost that fight too. He'll be a gate keeper at best. While everyone knows Rampage is one of the best in the world. He MIGHT get his belt back from Rashad, and keep it for a few months before "The Dragon" takes it from him and kicks everyones ass!

In addition to the awards listed in the article, they should have awarded "Least Sportsmanlike of the Night" to Matt Hamill for his ridiculous over-zealous celebration while Munoz was clearly in very bad shape and being carried out of the ring on a board. I know Matt is deaf, but blind also? C'mon Matt, show some respect for your downed opponent. In the last few fights Matt earned some respect from me, but much of that was lost last night. Best wishes to Munoz for a full recovery.

Thanks for the video. In the excitement of the moment during the fight, I didn't catch the fact that goddamned Goldberg said "Good job by Yves Lavigne!" seconds after Lavigne does one of the *worst* jobs ever witnessed in an MMA contest. He later said hello to Rogan before exiting the building walking backwards.

Oh my god, that was fucking dank. I thought Napao had it in the bag and then BOOM. Hamill looked really good out there, like really really good.

Jackson/Jardine is an all time greatest fight IMO, especially when you factor in the post fight. That staredown was the sickest shit I've seen in the UFC in a long time. My prediction for that one is Rashad by KO, 1st round.

I got blacked out last night and apparently I pulled an R-Kelly and peed all over some chick. When confronted about it in the morning, I asked "how's taste my pee pee pee?".

True fuckin' story, you wish you lived my life.

u have no fuckin clue what ur talking about. u sound like someone who watched the fighting last night for the first time and think u know everything about it.

Sell was totally outmatched and looked like a complete can in there, I like Jardine cause of the unprodictable factor plus he looks a little crazy but he just can't put 2 fights together. Some nice knock outs especially Hamill's. Rampage may de-thrown Rashad BUT as Jay smith said above only until Machida is givin his well deserved title shot, and then the 205 will be his for a long time. Once again I click on the fights and get taken to a Partyy poker bullshit web-site whats up with that shit Potato??

You have to be fucking kidding me, Kendall Grove pulling the Tito gravedigging routine after his win? It was a clean knockout but he was on his heels the whole fight. What an asshat.

@ Commence Da Jigglin'
Not only that, but did you see how weak he looked doin it? Like he was gassed or somethin. Yeah, he's not one of my favorites. He won't keep his job for long.

Commence Da Jigglin':
lol
yea, he was on heels... except for when he was punching day in the face.

watch the fight again.

that brown/sell fight was a disaster.

I think Greg Jackson got what he wanted out of Jardine...The end of the nipple twist.

You are the tard. Munoz walked out on his own. Get the facts before you open your retarded mouth.

Ohh man, that last punch by Rampage won it, close fight!

P.S. fuck an Grove

Munoz was straight up out. Nice kick.

What was wrong with Sell? He was getting devastated by shot after shot from the first ring of the bell. It was like he was hanging on in the entire fight. I don't blame the ref, there wasn't a clear distinction between what a ready-to-go fighting Sell and a half-unconscious working on instinct Sell looked like.

If Yves had stopped that fight like he initially intended, the criticism would have been worse then the Kos stoppage. He saw that Sell wasn't out and let the fight continue. Sell was never out, just dazed and unable to defend himself. I'm glad that he let it go.
Hammil looked better, but Munoz had terrible stand up and carried his hands so low, and I expected more out of his wrestling.
I don't really know how Jardine can be so sloppy looking but still competitve in 205s. Fundamentally you would think that he would lose most but somehow he manages to win most, and even looked better than Rampage for much of the fight.

Does anyone else feel bad for Napao? That sucks to actually be dominating what little there was of a fight, and then be KO'ed by some freakish power. I hope they give Napao someone like Kongo next so that he can get right back in the top of the division where he belongs.

And I am still uncertain about Carwin. We know he hits really eff-ing hard, but his technique needs a lot of work. I really like the guy, and he may have a ton of potential, but right now we need to be cautious that he isn't another Houston Alexander, just with better wrestling. I hope he turns out to be more, but that was the definition of a lucky punch last night. I don't really believe in lucky punches, but that was as close as you get. Good job for Carwin, though. At the very least, all heavyweight need to be very cautious of his power.

@ Nate

Sell was KTFO. He was finished 3 times maybe even 4 times. He took way too much punishment. Yves was right the 1st time. Criticisims like yours are what made him second guess. Brown was fighting a Crash Dummy after he restarted the match.

@ Dick Vitale

LOL comment of the week. Get that man a T shirt

@ JPFighter

Do you time your period with each UFC PPV or was this just a coincidence?

Jardine is a good fighter, albeit not the best, and he is good to have around. You can try and say he's not a great technique fighter, but he's got something that allowed him to TKO Forrest, beat and knock down Chuck, and almost beat Rampage. If he can boast a resume as impressive as that and then some, then he should stay in the UFC where he belongs, not some lower organization, you dumb twat.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Maynard v Miller and how he didn't go for the ol' lay and pray.

I'm suprised Rampage couldn't put Jardine away. That performance really makes me think Rashad has the advantage in their bout. Rashad is definitely quicker, he's a better wrestler by far, and his stand up is on par with Quinton's. Rampage will have to get a big punch in there to beat Rashad because if it goes the distance the decision would likely go to Evans.

I'm not huge fan of Jardine, but everyone who is saying that he's not true UFC caliber is crazy. He hung in there for 3 rounds with a much improved Rampage, plus has notable wins over 2 former champs in Liddel and Griffin. Are you guys kidding me? True, he's not the most exciting fighter and he does look a bit like a menopausal hemaphrodite keebler elf on steroids, but the truth of the matter is that he is not someone who can simply be steamrolled over. For all you fans who think you're experts, try to differentiate your opinions from true criticism.

Carwin's hands are fucking hand grenades! That's all I have to say about that.

Matt Hammil is a tough son of a bitch. Didn't think I'd be seeing him KO anyone with a high kick. His punching style is still a bit sloppy in my opinion, but his wrestling is truly amazing. He should really use more ground and pound with the ability he has to control people on the ground. Let's see Hammil against a better oponent soon please.

That hairy bastard Matt Brown should change his nickname to Wolverine. Too bad Yes Levine sullied the fight with his indecisive actions. Props to Matt for the classy show of concern for his oponent. I would like to see Matt Brown fight someone else tomorrow. The way he came out fighting is how I'd like to see more fights go down. Give him a better opponent, and fast.

Somebody should tell Kendall Grove that you can't use the grave digger routine without looking like a douche...unless of course he looks up to Tito Ortiz, which in that case you're right on point man.

I thought Gonzaga was looking great against Carwin and still think he's a top 5 HW, but credit is due to Shane for being able to get back to his feet and score the KO.

Kendall Grove can't help looking like a douche, and this wins means nothing ultimately for his career. Still just a training partner.

I dont get all the hate for Jardine, the guys a good fighter. He's beaten top guys before and to say he "can't fight" is saying the Ice Man can't fight either cause Jardine dominated him when they faced off.

matt brown is fucking ruthless....pete sell was fucking lost....a couple times

great fights, but pete sell should have quit a long time ago he's starting to look unsteady before his fights even start.

Rashad Evans is scared of Rampage.. the em0-tional b*tch rushed the ring because he felt threatened by the 3 round man-handling of his brokeback buttsecks partner.. he even used his commentating seating position to get there even quicker and not let my boy Rampage enjoy his moment of glory.

poor, sadd, pathetic, completely unprofessional little Rashad. go fuck yourself. i will inwardly gloat when you lose your belt.

UFC 97: Matt Brown vs. Yves Levinge
