(Can’t the Germans find room in their hearts for something besides soccer, beer and buxom women? Not that we’re against those things…)
It just wouldn’t be a new frontier for the UFC without a little hyperbolic fear-mongering from opponents of MMA. With UFC 99 scheduled for Cologne, Germany on June 13, City Councilor Manfred Wolf (known henceforth as the German Bob Reilly) is doing his part to disrupt the UFC’s German debut with this nonsensical and factually inaccurate criticism (translated by our friend Robert K at Big Odds Mike):
"MMA is not a sport because it legitimizes death and serious injury. The only aim is to destroy your opponent." Adding further: "I personally find disgusting … Here one finds the lowest human instincts."
The only aim is to destroy your opponent? Clearly this is a man who hasn’t seen Anderson Silva’s last two fights.
The good news is that, unlike in America where a state assemblyman can spew all sorts of crap without ever bothering to find out what he’s talking about, in Germany they don’t put up with that particular type of bullshit.
The Lanxess Arena and its management company are reportedly alleging defamation and slander and is trying to legally compel Wolf to rescind his remarks. With around 7,000 tickets already sold for UFC 99, it sounds like the people behind the event over there aren’t about to back down. Now if only they’d pay a visit to a certain agriculture-loving assemblyman in upstate New York. The last thing you want to do is piss off motivated Germans. Just ask Poland. What, too soon?
