The UFC 99 Poster That Would Have Been Epic in 2005

UFC 99 poster
(Props: MMA Mania)

If you were an MMA fan four years ago, you can probably imagine what your reaction would have been had someone, preferably Scott Bakula from “Quantum Leap,” gone back in time to show you this poster for UFC 99.  For one thing, you would have been blown away that the UFC even made it to UFC 99, and that they hadn’t yet transitioned to an all-robot fighting organization.  Then there’s the shock of seeing Pride bad-ass Wanderlei Silva in the Octagon to face UFC middleweight champ Rich Franklin, and in Germany for fuck’s sake.

Basically, your head would have exploded right then and there, all over Scott Bakula, which is why time travel is dangerous to begin with and should probably be avoided until we are responsible enough to not use it for stuff like showing fight posters to people.

Now think about how you view this poster in the present day.  It’s still a credible fight, and still interesting, though for entirely different reasons.  Let’s just say no one’s head is in any danger of exploding here, with the possible exception of Wanderlei.  And if you weren’t an MMA fan back in 2005 and you don’t really get what I’m going on about here, allow me to derisively say, noob!

I don't think Franklin is washed up. However I think that stylistlicly, this is a bad match up for Rich. I see Wand with a knock out win.

so in order for franklin to still be a good fighter in certain peoples eyes, he wouldve either had to win against anderson silva which noone has come close to in the UFC yet, or machida who also noone has come close to putting away, or henderson in which that fight was close enough to go either ways? i don't think it's anywheres near the time for people to start talking like rich is all washed up

Franklin isn't washed up. I can't believe the shit I'm reading. Franklin has ONLY lost to TOP and I do mean fucking TOP level fighters. A champion, an EX-Champion, and a FUTURE (after he wins a boring decision over Rashad Evans) champion. I don't see how that makes him washed up? Besides, he's not that fucking old.. he's not even into his 40's yet.. Franklin's still got a couple years of greatness to go. Wanderlei, however, as much as I love him, just doesn't have the youth anymore. If he gets KO'd by Franklin, look for Dana White to try to pre-emptively retire him as well.

Fair play, and in all honesty I was being a bit of a dick. I do believe that Okami and Hammill are good opponents. They may not be elite, but beating them does show he is above gate keeper. With the exception of the Anderson Silva fights, he has never been outclassed. I know this wasn't really the argument, but somebody like Wanderlei has. Several times. I just feel the jury is still out on whether or not Franklin is washed up.

This fight would have been incredible 5 years ago! You know, before Franklin got that permanently black eye, and Sliva's head was still sorta normal shaped. Now it is just looks like a fight between two guys from a Vo-tech high school.

precisely, hlebtastic.

but uneducated, no... Franklin hasn't beat anyone that matters since he got his face smashed by Anderson Silva in 2006 - Lutter and and Jason McDonald both washed out of the UFC, Okami was promising (but he has gone nowhere with his only wins the past 2 years since the Franklin fight being against Evan Tanner and Dean Lister(who also washd out of the UFC)), and then also a win against the UFC golden boy Matt Hamill, who has gone on to defeat such world-renowned superstars like mark munoz and and reese andy(i can sense the world utter a collective gasp of fond remembrance at those last two household names in MMA)

so if I mischaracterized Rich Franklin's recent career showing, please tell me where?

not trying to hate on the guy, but I certainly hope he and Dana White spend Christmas together like DW and Liddell, or else he is facing a tootsie roll out the UFC's revolving door.

Alright I get it Dojima. This is the internet so you have every right to make uneducated snide comments.

I am quite glad... these next few UFC's look to be good so far..

I am really looking forward to 98, 99 is rounding up..100 just because you kinda have to, 101 is coming along nicely as well...

I think Franklin can take it to another level again...with a little luck, which never hurt anything.

It must be 2005 in my eyes because I'm looking forward to this fight. This is going to be a better fight than the last few UFC main events.

Redmoose- May 12, 2009 at 5:29 pm
Its sad, Wand looks too old on that poster.
Hamma Fist Elbow Bam-Bam- May 12, 2009 at 5:23 pm
I thought Franklin beat Hendo. And I love Wandy, but if Chuck needs to retire, Wandy DEFINITELY needs to retire.
Dojima- May 12, 2009 at 5:21 pm
incendiary? please... if you find that incendiary, you should probably just quit the internet...

i was just stating my observation - Franklin looked awkward in his fight against Hendo.
Mdollas- May 12, 2009 at 5:14 pm
Wanderlei Silva is still one of my favorite fighters, and Rich Franklin is a great competitor. For Rich, this may just be an oppurtunity to let everyone know he is still around, and still a competitor. Wanderlei needs this win, or at least a three round spectacle, another knockout loss on his record is the last thing he needs. (Wanderlei really really really needs to change his striking if he wants to stay....alive?)
One Two- May 12, 2009 at 5:11 pm
franklin doesn't have a snow balls chance in hell against wandy neither does anderson Silva he might be gettiing a lil old but hes still got enough to take the belt.
hlebtastic- May 12, 2009 at 4:57 pm
Dojima, you are the worst kind of asshole. Rich has still only lost to three people in his career: Anderson Silva, Lyoto Machida, and Dan Henderson. We can all agree that these are elite level fighters. Also, I felt he beat Hendo. The poor guy got illegally headbutt and eye gouged and still lost a split decision. Anderson Silva is a terrible matchup here. He hasn't fallen off the pace anywhere near the way Wanderlei has. Think before you type something so incendiary and reactionary.
Dojima- May 12, 2009 at 4:46 pm
There was a time years ago when I thought Rich Franklin could have beaten up God... Today, I laugh during his fights because he looks so awfully uncoordinated and awkward im amazed that at one point he was the Man...

How far the mighty have fallen...
