UFC to Counter-Program ‘Fedor vs. Rogers’ With Star-Studded ‘Main Events’ Show

("Stay…off…my…LAWN!" Photo courtesy of Fighters.com)

While Strikeforce is still locking down fights for their November 7th "Fedor vs. Rogers" card, the UFC already has their plans finalized. In an effort to draw eyes away from the World’s Greatest Heavyweight, Spike TV will be airing a two-hour special at 9 p.m. ET/PT called "UFC Main Events." The lineup will include:

Randy Couture vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira from UFC 102
Vitor Belfort vs. Rich Franklin from UFC 103
BJ Penn vs. Kenny Florian from UFC 101
Forrest Griffin vs. Anderson Silva from UFC 101

None of these fights have ever been seen on basic cable, which is good news for those of you who haven’t had the time or money to keep up with the UFC’s recent pay-per-view broadcasts. But while previous viewership battles between the UFC and Strikeforce haven’t always been held on level playing fields, the UFC will now be putting some of its best product on Spike to compete with a potentially massive audience on CBS. Tables, they turn sometimes. We’re about to find out how strong the UFC brand really is…

shut up you mma noob. the silva-griffin fight was set up you hoe.
that preformance silva gave was nothing special.. any1 can dodge punches from that far away. MMA NOOB

-Wow you moron, you actually think that fight was set up? In now way, shape or form is any fight in the UFC worked. You are a fucking tool. I wasnt talking about the KO either pussy, I was talking about when Silva knocked Forest down with a left cross after dodging like a 4 punch combo. Even if I was talking about the KO it is still impressive. You are in fact the MMA noob you fucking little girl and everyone can see that by reading your incompetent posts. Faggot little bitch, learn what the fuck your talking about before you write some dumb ass shit down, son.

@NateGetsDicksInHisAssNightly.

Maybe you didn't quit understand the point I was trying to make. I order every fight, or go watch it at an upscale sports bar that requires reservations. And I don't drink beer.

But my point was that people that cry about a PPV fight being on spike for free 2 months later are idiots.

PS you're a moron.

hahahaah that caption made me lol.

keep it up

People who don't watch mma regularly are the only ones who will bother to watch the re-runs. (most people will just use torrents if they miss them) There is no way that I'm watching re-runs when I can watch a Fedor fight.
for the love of mma- October 21, 2009 at 2:37 pm
@ecimmortal and defender.... have you ever thrown a party and ordered the fight and bought a better beer than natural ice or even touched a boob let alone get laid?

I DIDNT THINK SO!!!! YOU CHEAP ASS VIRGINS!!!!!

2 of those fights add up to 6 minutes total. The BJ Penn/Florian fight was 3 rounds of snoring followed by 90 seconds of BJ actually doing something, and the Couture fight goes the distance, but it's not a great fight.

This looks like a great line up to chock full of commercials about the next episode of the Ultimate Kimbo Slayer and how with Couture at LW now, he's unstoppable, or that someone actually gives a shit about Swick/Hardy and how they'll be fed to GSP as a sacrifice.

Don't forget that everyone's favorite British chob, Bisping, will also get some air time!

I can't wait for this night of excellent (shitty) UFC fights!
ecimmortal- October 21, 2009 at 2:20 pm
LOL @ any knuckle dragging retard who thinks that there are any worked fights in the UFC. Go back to watching the WWE retards.

A also love to laugh at the crybabies that complain about UFC airing a fight that they paid for 2 months ago. You know it will be free on Spike eventually. Do yourself a favor. Don't pay for te pay-per-view. Too easy.

UFC 's business model is pay-per-view. Thats what pays the bills, and allows them to maintain a stable business that presents you with quality programing. Not the hack jobs you have seen on EliteXC, Affliction, and will be seeing from Strikeforce.

RaWrBoOm- October 21, 2009 at 2:17 pm
I'll watch the Big Nog and Randy fight because I didn't see that one but other then that for sure watching CBS.

The UFC isn't trying to get hardcore fans to watch UFC reruns instead of Fedor v Rogers, they are showing the more casual fans some good fights to keep them from channel surfing.
Defender- October 21, 2009 at 1:54 pm
I'm gunna bookmark this thread and check the Nielson Ratings after and see just how many people watched the UFC fights.

Really...I have second thoughts because when I am trying to have a logical argument with someone who talks about heads up asses, and fuck those whores...it's not going to matter.

Thank you, the Internet.

you have got enough of my money ufc, sopcast ftw.
busted_cranium- October 21, 2009 at 1:37 pm
Spike has their collective heads up their asses. No one wants to watch fights that have already happened, especially when anyone and everyone can catch them on any number of web sites the day after they were shown live.

Fedor wins his fight and also beats the UFC. Again.
Mike Milbury- October 21, 2009 at 1:36 pm
Obviously, as Defender clearly pointed out, this counter-programming is to get ratings from the casuals, not the hardcores. Why would the UFC cater to the hardcores in this situation? We probably only make up like a 0.1 rating or something small.

God, the arrogance of some of these internet hardcore fans: "Huhuhuh. Fuck Dana and the UFC. Why do we wanna watch this again? Huhuhuh. The world revolves around us! "
Soda Popinski- October 21, 2009 at 1:35 pm
portland mma, your response confuses me.

MANswers is the poor man's 60 minutes by the way.

New Adventures of Old Christine is awesome! Way to break that Seinfeld curse JLD.
Defender- October 21, 2009 at 1:24 pm
If I'm not mistaken...and I know I'm not...die hard MMA fans are not who the UFC is marketing this for. CBS is new to this market and they don't even know WHO they are marketing the Fedor fight for to be honest.

@the love for mma - You sir, are a moron. To call DW and the UFC a whore after you paid them...only this time they are giving it to you for free means they are sluts. Please get it right.

If you really break it down, the fact DW is countering the Fedor fight with these reruns (the Forrest vs. Anderson fight was so crushing ESPN actually covered it...and spoiled it for me) means he knows for a fact CBS isn't trying to really do anything with this fight and they are only testing the waters. Odds are he knows his reruns will do well enough against this promotion that CBS will look at the ratings numbers...see how close they are and drop Strikeforce. Maybe even leaving the door open for the prime time coverage for the UFC that DW has been hinting at.
portland mma- October 21, 2009 at 1:16 pm
How the fuck is Spike the poorman's CBS? Because they both show horrible CSI? One's demographic is purely 18-34 year olds, the other is a major network that has shows that appeal to everyone. I'm sorry I just don't see how New Adventures of Old Christine and How I met your mother compare to shows like Deadliest Warrior and TNA Impact.
LargeMidget- October 21, 2009 at 1:13 pm
I think it's a bad move by the UFC. Sure it will draw some casual viewers away from the Strikeforce event, but most actual MMA fans will have seen all of those fights already and will watch the live shit.

On the other hand I don't think the Strikeforce show will get as many viewers without Kimbo or Gina Carano.

On a related note, no way does this fight last longer than 1:30.

NICE^^^. The Bens are tools when it comes to giving away prizes. Man they pick some of the worst ones its amazing.

I love the caption on that picture. It's perfect. If there was a "site administrator best caption" contest and I had some t-shirts to give it away, I would totally ignore that awesome caption and give the shirt to someone else who's caption wasn't even remotely funny. Just to keep up with tradition.

UFC by TKO in the 2nd round.
Soda Popinski- October 21, 2009 at 12:48 pm
spike is the poor man's cbs.

you lost this fight white.

dang, that was smooth.
One Two- October 21, 2009 at 12:48 pm
The UFC can't counter this card well i guess they could but it'd have to be

lesner/Nog
Silva/Vitor
Machida/shogun
Velasquez/Carwin for Free!

to Compete with

Fedor/rogers
Shields/mayhem
Mousassi/Soku
Werdum/Silva
831 Son- October 21, 2009 at 12:48 pm
