UFC Fight Night 19: Diaz/Guillard Gets Top Billing Over Maynard/Huerta

No, your eyes are not deceiving you. We just received the above poster image in our inbox, in which Nate Diaz (who’s coming off back-to-back losses to Clay Guida and Joe Stevenson) and Melvin Guillard (cokehead) appear to be headlining the next UFC Fight Night card over top lightweight contender Gray Maynard and Roger Huerta, who used to be the UFC’s Great Brown Hope until he started talking out of turn. Of course, most fans are just going to be happy to see two great lightweight matchups on free TV, not realizing the passive aggressive jab of disrespect that’s going on here. (Honestly, I can’t wait to hear Joe Rogan and Mike Goldberg’s spin on why Diaz vs. Guillard is main-event-worthy.) But hey, good luck to Nate — when was the last time a fighter was given a headlining slot and a "win or go home" match on the same night?

UFC Fight Night 19 will serve as a lead-in to the premiere of Kimbo’s House (aka TUF 10). Tickets to the event go on sale this week; the current lineup is after the jump.

hmm ya maynard and huerta are both higher in the rankings than diaz or guillard, butttt guillard vs. diaz will be exciting and maynard will probably just sit on "el matador" for 15 minutes, and it makes sense cause not only are the ufc setting up huerta for a lay n pray loss, but they're also not even making it the main event. insult to injury, how the ufc gets down brahhh

Dana White just called me and gave me this thorough explanation as to why the Maynard/Huerta fight isn't getting top billing:

"Cuz fuck Huerta, that's why."

Makes sense to me. Why Dana would call me at 3am to tell me that doesn't make so much sense. But Dana's intentions are obvious: Huerta talked shit, shelved for a year, has one fight left, so throw him in there w/ the best lightweight who is not currently booked for the title fight. See also: Machida vs Ortiz. Dana can't legally kick Huerta's ass, but he can make some $ off of someone else doing it. Another example of Dana's genius, and that you don't bite hand that feeds ya..when it's Dana's.

I don't think that anyone's getting bent over. It's a PROMO poster. You're gonna put the mainstream draws biggest on the poster. Just the Diaz name will sell tickets, and Melvin... Well, his name's Melvin. How many times are the non-main event fights the best fights on the card? It's nothing but the UFC trying to move tickets. 10 bucks says the only one pissed is Pretty boy with the Abdominal problem.

Nate Diaz is only 24 man he is a great fighter just needs to get a bit stronger to deal with the lay n pray wrestlers other then that i see him doing big things in the UFC.BTW the fight with Joe Stephenson Nate took no damage Joe looked more bashed up then Nate did and the Guida Fight dont get me started on that fight cause is was total BS fight. I really hope the UFC adds new rules like add yellow cards like Dream.

deadpanda and "the man" my comments are relative to the Diaz/Guillard fight being the main event over Maynard/Huerta which deserves top billing...Huerta is a legitimate contender at 155 but due to the fact he put something else before mma in his life he gets the shaft. And Maynard could be argued to be deserving of a title shot right now but it seems his "style" of winning is holding him back. Kinda the ufc used to do to a certain Machida. Politics like that shouldnt hold good fighters back. Its only going to get worse. It has nothing to do with whether I or anyone else is paying to see the event, and it think thats quite obvious. Use your brain for once.

Agree that Guillard is susceptible to submissions, and I can see Diaz taking this fight. Both lost to Joe Stevenson, but Nick went the distance at least. Daddy choked out Melvin quickly. Then in his next fight, Guillard again gets choked out (and embarrassed) by Rich Clementi, who eventually gets his walking papers from the UFC. Now we get Guillard in a main event. Just don't get it...

Wow these fight night cards are better than most PPV cards thats for sure!
I dont see this as a "lets get rid of Nate" fight that eveyone else is. I see this as a gimmie to get Nate a win. Melvin is straight up garbage on the ground and was choked out by Joe Daddy like 2 mins into the first round when they fought and was choked out by Rich Clementie. I mean the kid hits hard but he doesnt defend a sub worth a damn. Nate should take that fight easy.

This is definitely worth watching but I'm on the fence on whether I want to see it live. I live in the suburbs about 30 min away from the Cox Center, but is it worth it if it's going to cost $50 to sit in the nose bleeds? Last time I watched a fight live was in Hawaii and I got to see Jake Shields, Robbie Lawler, Gina Carano, Nick Diaz, and Joey Villasenor fight for $30 and had good seats.

c-buster allstar Aaron Simpson is a stud, he may only have 5 fights but he is a world class wrestler who has knocked everyone out that he's fought, thats pretty fucking impressive for a wrestler, not to mention everyone at ACS is saying he's an absolute beast. I'm a Miller fan but I don't see him beating Simpson, did you see how Miller did against Sonnen? What about against Mike Massenzio (another great wrestler)? Simpson is just as good of a wrestler with better hands, sorry Miller.

No, I don't see the UFC as trying to get rid of Nate Diaz, why else would he be fighting Guillard. Out of cokehead Melvin's 7 losses, 6 were by submission.

A couple questions:

A. Who the fuck is Aaron Simpson, and when did he do anything remotely good enough to deserve a shot at a guy like Dan Miller?

2. Does anyone else get the feeling that the UFC wants a reason to get rid of Nate Diaz?

I mean, he loses to Joe Stephenson (previously fought for the Lightweight Strap), then to Clay Guida (On any Given day could give whoever holds the Lightweight strap, a HELLUVA run for their money), and now he has to fight aruguably one of the hardest hitting lightweights in the world in Melvin Guillard? Either this is a testament to Nate Diaz's balls (I'll fight anyone, anywhere etc etc), or the UFC is basically wanting a solid reason (i.e. 3 losses in a row) to get rid of him?

And who gives a shit about Roger Huerta? The guy's as douchie as Tito.
