UFC in Negotiations to Buy Majority Stake In G4 Network

(Now we know how the void left by All My Children going off the air in the fall will be filled.)

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the UFC is currently in negotiations with NBCUniversal to purchase a majority stake of its G4 network.

According to the report, (which quotes different sources who have claim that negotiations are in the beginning and midway points and others who say that the story is just smoke, but no fire as the UFC is talking with several networks to get an idea of what options are available), the deal would provide the promotion with a new home for its programming when its current deals with Versus and Spike TV conclude at the end of this year. Apparently Spike has made initial high monetary contract demands of the UFC to renew a deal with the specialty channel whose growth can be attributed in large part due to runaway success of The Ultimate Fighter.

G4′s asking price and the percentage of ownership the UFC is looking for are not yet known.

Viewership of G4 has been steadily declining for some time, which could mean that the UFC could get a deal on the struggling property that Direct TV recently dropped from its channel offerings due to low ratings.

Well it looks like we aren’t going to be mentioned on Attack of the Show any more…

We’ll post updates on the situation as we get them.

If all of the free UFC content moves from Spike to G4 then I'll be fucked. G4 is on an extra tier of digital cable channels that I don't have. I already pay $167 per month for cable/internet at my house. I refuse to pay more just so I can get channels like G4 and FUSE and FUEL and VH1 Classic. So FUCK MMA FOR ALWAYS PUTTING THEIR SHIT ON CHANNELS I HAVE TO PAY EXTRA FOR! FUCK STRIKEFORCE FOR BEING ON SHOWTIME, FUCK THE UFC FOR CHARGING $50 FOR SHITTY FIGHTS LIKE UFC 130, AND FUCK THE UFC/G4 DEAL!

I love G4 and the UFC. But bitch please, they need to be separate. My need for nerdy things and manly meatheadedness must not converge. They need to balance each other out.

Brock Lesnar would smash through Ninja Warrior. Just think, Makato Nagano is only like 5'3". Put some of the UFC's big guys in there, and they can just step over the obstacles.

The UFC will just change the name from G4 to DFW.

It's common enough...

Spike used to be TNN: The National Network - really?? National?? Wow I'm impressed. Jackasses!!

Versus used to be OLN: Outdoor Life Network - gayyyy!!

I think people are overlooking the fact that it says UFC is looking to buy a MAJORITY stake. If that were to happen, you can forget all your precious G4 programming (didn't that used to be the video game channel?)...The channel will be rebranded the UFC Network and air everything we get on Spike and Versus currently, and probably stuff from the Strikeforce and Pride library.

G4's demo is really 11-15 year-olds.

UFC's target demo is 18-35 with aspirations of 18-55 like the NFL.

I don't see what good it would do unless they completely cancelled all the shows and just renamed the network.
Big Shafty- June 8, 2011 at 10:29 pm
G4's ratings have been declining all because hot ass Olivia Munn left their flagship show and marathons of Ninja Warrior aren't cuttin it. But I'm all for a channel with nothin but UFC and video games. Plus it'll expand the UFC's demographic to the nerds that can't beat it to Olivia anymore.

Holy fucking shit! You guys actually read the Wall Street Journal?

I wouldn't be surprised if the strategy is to get on a network in a spot like G4, and try to essentially build a UFC channel, .. Maybe not by name, but by the majority of the content..

Hell, they already have a ton of content, and they're capable of producing it too. Whether it's "good" content is debatable, but it's content that obviously is generating dollars.

They mess with Ninja Warrior and I will cut a bitch.
Bill Jackson- June 8, 2011 at 7:13 pm
I would love to go straight from a UFN to new episodes of Ninja Warrior without changing the channel. Actually, it would be a good promotion to have UFC fighters enter Ninja Warrior competition. How could that fail?
Art Gibs- June 8, 2011 at 6:05 pm

It was a rhetorical question. He originally used "commence" instead of "conclude" in the article.
NoFlegraPor- June 8, 2011 at 5:37 pm
I don't have cable now, nor have I had it for going on 2 years. I would immediately sign up for Time Warner Digital if UFC gets on G4 and Bellator goes to Spike. In no way am I being sarcastic when I say this is good news.
noizy- June 8, 2011 at 5:05 pm
@Art Gibs: "commence" means start.
gabrielb- June 8, 2011 at 4:58 pm
they better stay far away from my e3 coverage and ninja warrior shows.
Lopes- June 8, 2011 at 4:58 pm
A major cable network like ION?
Art Gibs- June 8, 2011 at 4:40 pm
Eeek, I hope the UFC doesn't put their stuff on some no-name network. The UFC needs to be on a major cable channel or network TV. It's time.

Also, do you know what commence means?
