("Yeah, just probation and a slap on the wrist fine to roll over on my mom.")
("Suspended? You’re kidding, right?")
Chael Sonnen‘s week just went from bad to worse.
First the West Linn, Oregon native had to turn in his realtor license and will pay a $10,000 fine as part of a plea deal with Federal prosecutors for his part in an alleged mortgage fraud/money laundering scheme and now the UFC has suspended the former number one middleweight contender until he gets his life back in order.
UFC president Dana White told TMZ today that though they have not cut Sonnen from the roster, Zuffa has opted to "temporarily freeze" his contract.
"Chael Sonnen has gone through a lot in the last few months and we think it’s important for him to focus on getting his personal life together before focusing on his career in the UFC," White explained. "I spoke with Chael earlier today and he agrees that setting priorities in his life is the best thing for him right now. I sincerely hope Chael is able to straighten out his personal life."
Having walked away from the Oregon district state senate race last year while he dealt with the charges that were detailed during yesterday’s federal court hearing, the staunch Republican, who recently started GreenLightDaily.com with a group of investors now finds himself unemployed.
The suspension is probably just for show to make the UFC look like they are distancing themselves from Sonnen, who was rumored to be taking on Yoshihiro Akiyama at UFC 128 in March until the heat dies down a bit. Prosecutors are said to be looking for two years probation on top of the monetary fine, which means that Chael will likely not be able to travel outside of Oregon unless given special permission by his probation officer and the courts.
Although there are statutes in place to prevent the government from preventing individuals from making a living, they usually don’t protect convicted felons.

commentsccman- you just got to take the good with the bad bro
Rex- told you this shit was going to happen.
I think it's totally fair for people to fact-check and even criticize articles they read here. As others have said, one would think that the editors would want to know if they 1) are writing stuff people like / don't like and 2) if they are getting the facts correct. Ultimately, that feedback serves to improve the site for everyone. You need a pretty thick skin to be an editor of any prominent blog, and CP is no exception. Besides, would it really be better if every comment was just a big "CP is great!" love fest?
I'll allow that some comments can be over the top. If all people are going to do is bitch, they probably should ask themselves why they are here. But there's gotta be some middle ground between "this site sucks now, I'm leaving!" and "STFU and GTFO if you don't like it!"
I liked Sonnen back in his WEC days, before he became a loudmouth idiot. And I even liked him smashing Silva for 4+ rounds (because I don't like Silva much as a person, either.) But to find out now that Sonnen is not only the liar everyone found him out to be (you know, because he was constantly lying to all our faces about stuff he claims he never said-- even though it's on video), he's also a steroid user (who chastised Lance Armstrong for being a user before Sonnen, himself, got caught) and a money launderer. It's amazing. What a disgusting human being. I wish the UFC would just cut him. I think he's a bad guy and bad for the sport. I know I would have never cheered for him again based on him just being a spotlight-hungry liar. This pushes things to a whole new level. Amazing...
Whats with all the typos in your tags, CP?
Now let's go watch the bachelor! ;)
I also think that it would be a mistake to ignore or dismiss the complaints of a guy like ccman, since he has been here a long time, and isn't the first or last to make these types of criticisms. However, I still like the guys who comment here (most of them), whether I agree or disagree, and I still laugh here more than any other site.
Forgot what my point was... so I'm going to open another beer. Cheers everyone.
The guy is out there but its obviously something millions have been sucked into before. No wonder the UFC didn't let him go.
I say throw the book at Chael, send him to jail to be some big dudes bitch, and given his tiny nuts he will be pimped out pretty quickly. It would be pretty funny to watch Chael on Locked Up: Raw, psycho stare, rambling on about bullshit.
@ CCman - Come on lighten up for fuck sakes, its an MMA site.
Sonenn makes MMA just a little more interesting. Damn near everything he has done in the past year has wound up being a fucking abortion. I hate the fact that he pissed hot and robbed us all of a rematch with AS....but damn it - I just can't quit you man!
This IS life dude... Chael Sonnen is an excellent fighter, and made a huge impact on our beloved sport. What's so wrong about discussing his (life(e)) situation, because it affects us as fans...
I'd love to hear your IDEAL website with all the things you would like to see changed... please inform us how to live with an upgrade.
you can always got to shedog if you dont want to read a new article but once a week. i like the cynical humor, i like me some hot potatos, and i like to know if a dominant fighter is an absolute piece of shit! thank you CP
And mma fans theoretical attention span pandering is a huge part of the problem...sorry pinche (translates to mexicans do not speak spanish) attention span guapo.
