Video: Alistair Overeem Guarantees That Lesnar Fight Won’t Go the Distance

(Props: ShootMediaTV via MMAMania)

It’s such an overused MMA cliche that it’s bordering on CagePotato Ban status. But in this situation, we’ll allow it. Alistair Overeem and Brock Lesnar will be spending 25 minutes in the cage together on December 30th, and the former Strikeforce heavyweight champ tells Shoot Media that he doesn’t see the fight going to the judges:

I’m going to do what I do best. I expect him to do what he does best. This fight is not going to go the distance, that’s one thing for certain. Someone is going to get beat up. I’m going to do my best to make sure it’s not me.”

Overeem probably didn’t expect his last match against Fabricio Werdum to go the distance either, but sometimes this weird sport will surprise you. Still, a brutal finish does seem like the most likely outcome here. And according to the oddsmakers, Overeem will probably be the guy to get it. Agree or disagree?

It all depends on how Lesnar takes a powerful knee in the balls.

this fight will go the same way cain v brock did. but much much quicker

@ MonsterMaulingAss, 'If Brock gets an early takedown he will not be able to handle reem and hold him so easily, this is not Frank Mir folks'. Exactly REEM is not Frank Mir and will have more trouble off his back, do u know how hard it is for a horse to get off it's back? Seriously though, Overeem does not possess a dangerous gaurd and if Brock takes him down thats where he is staying.

If this goes 5 rounds it will be a sorry sight indeed. Overeem was knackered after the Werdum fight and he didn't get taken down as far as I remember. If this goes to the ground with brock on top, I can't see that Overeem (or anyone for that matter) can take that for too long. Brock may gas if the fight is going against him, but if he's just in top position raining down the old masturbation punches, I don't see him losing too much steam over the course of 5 rounds or less.
Equally, if Brock can't get him down quickly, I can't imagine he's improved his striking enough to have any real chance there.
If overeem wins I'll say it would be in the first or second round. If brock gets it, I'd probably say round 3.

Until Brock "Bud Im Wiser now" Lesnar develops some tolerance for big blows to the chin (not looking for a manhole to jump into like against Carwin & Cain) and actually hires a real boxing coach aka freddie roach ect he will never attain his potential. Now if he takes care of these two things he can be a beast for a long time but dont count on it. Brocks boxing has not gotten one bit better and he sure aint used to gettin pounded in the head. Like they say most people are either born with a chin or not

Alistair "Winstrol-V" Overreem vs Brock "HGH" Lesnar

that logo looks like a flaming set of balls

Brock does have a good chin, he's never been knocked out cold. He just does not have the tolerance to take those heavy punches, its more psychological than anything.

I believe Brock has a solid gas tank, but lets not forget that Reem may be the most powerful opponent Brock has or will have faced. If Brock gets an early takedown he will not be able to handle reem and hold him so easily, this is not Frank Mir folks. Now depending on how tired Reem gets in later rounds(if they come) is where Brock's best chances are. Look for the knee during the shot, and watch out for that guillotine Reem likes so much.

If Horsemeat lands a good muay thai knee to Brocks colon he's going to shit jerky all over himself.

Brock CAN take a punch IMO. He took more punches from Cain and Carwin than all of their other opponents combined! lol He didnt even go unconscious....i think that says a lot. He just needs to work on his movement and standup...
RoJoegan- September 13, 2011 at 12:42 pm
Have to agree with Karma—Brock’s probably got a gas tank. Also agree with everyone that the Reem’s standup is deadly, especially for a man like Lesnar who hates being hit. There are so many unknowns in this fight—is Brock healthy? Did he lose 30lbs of muscle? Has he learned to stand in the pocket and trade? Does Overeem have an answer for world class wrestling? Is the Reem ready for a man his own size/strength? All things considered, the odds are in Alistair’s favor, but I could also see a healthy, improved Lesnar hammer fisting his way to a TKO.

Whats with the skepticism about Brock's Anaerobic base? Dudes got one of the best tanks in mma.. Thats a fact. He's one of the quickest Heavy-Weights I will admit his hands were suspect but Cain is a tough mother fucker. Brock is a wrestler, and once in awhile you meet someones committed to that life style you just know their going to be ready for this war. Same with Diaz he doesn't get tired and yet he's the Supposed biggest Pot head in the Sport.
Come on guys don't make this into a "When keeping it real goes wrong situations".
Fatty McDickbutts- September 13, 2011 at 11:05 am
Reem's gonna win. Brock can't take a punch.
Morningwood- September 13, 2011 at 10:20 am
RWR I agree, we've seen Lesnar not have his heart in a fight when he's not healthy. I want him to win because of his connection to MN. But, I'm nervous for him for sure!
Morningwood- September 13, 2011 at 10:14 am
for a striker to be effective he needs to be close enough to hit someone. Once your close enough to hit someone your close enough to be taken down. I agree Lesnar will need to weather the storm and may get Ko'd in the first couple of minutes. If that doesn't happen Lesnar will get a take down and gnp Overeem in the same fashion he gnp'd Mir the second fight. The problem with putting money on this fight is it probably will take 1 good punch to end the fight in Overeeem's favor.
mDino- September 13, 2011 at 9:56 am
brocks gonna get laid out within the first 2 rounds the same way duffee did. he simply can not stand with overeem
RwilsonR- September 13, 2011 at 9:36 am
I think a lot depends on how healthy Brock is.
knucklesamitch- September 13, 2011 at 9:20 am
either Overeem KO's Lesnar inside of the first 3-4min, or Lesnar is able to weather the storm and he picks up a TKO in the 3rd.
noname- September 13, 2011 at 9:01 am
Does this mean the fight is actually going to go the distance?

Fried Taco - Great comment

I actually disagree. I'm usually a big Lesnar hater. His experience with strikers has been a negative one sure, Cain beat him down, Carwin beat him up pretty soundly but for the ending. That being said, I think Lesnar will have learned a lot from these fights. When he fought Mir, he focused on fundamentals, and beat him to a pulp. One thing is for certain, Overeem doesn't have the gastank for five rounds based on the Werdum fight and that is not something you can just change in a few months. I believe Lesnar does ... IF ... he doesn't get punched.

This one goes to the mat, Lesnar lays on top of Overeem for five rounds, decision.
Fried Taco- September 13, 2011 at 8:32 am
I agree with the Reem, I don't think either of them has the gas to go five full rounds.
