Video: BJ Penn is Really Taking Training for UFC 137 Bout With Nick Diaz Seriously

RVCA | BJ PENN THE ROAD TO UFC 137 from RVCA on Vimeo.

It’s always a good sign when you see BJ Penn with his head down toiling through a training camp like he is in this nifty little “Road to UFC 137″ video released this week by RVCA.

The former UFC lightweight and welterweight champion explains during the video that he was a bit put off by the UFC’s decision to switch opponents on him less than two months out from UFC 137 and that he didn’t want to have to fight his friend and sometimes training partner Nick Diaz, but says he relented when he realized that there weren’t any other opponents for him to fight. Their friendship will likely go out the window with the first fist to face contact in the bout.

I’m actually looking more forward to this fight than I am GSP-Condit. Am I alone?

Anyway, Penn believes that he hasn’t hit his peak yet and the 32-year-old Hilo, Hawaii native  says that he is working towards once again becoming the UFC welterweight champion. “The Prodigy” also says that BJPenn.com is the best MMA website in the world, so we take what he says with a grain of salt.

i think at this point in his career we can stop talking about which bj shows up. the non cardio bj hasnt shown up in like 4-5 years, i know it seems like a short time in mma years but we should be beyond that. this is like a girlfriend fight, where we always bring up that old bullshit that dont matter anymore.

its a hard one to call for me. u never know what bj is gonna show up. i would love for bj to take diaz out. i would have rather diaz got john fitch to see him get wrestlef*#ked for 3 rds.

The making of this article seals BJ's fate - good work, Cage Potato. Pourin' one out for the flyin' Hawaiian
Crazy Croat- October 13, 2011 at 10:02 pm
oh and imo bj is on a completely different level to diaz...so are other top ufc welterweights...if diaz does his hands down type of boxing he's out in the first..
Crazy Croat- October 13, 2011 at 9:58 pm
i can't believe that he guy on the video criticised marv marinovich's training regime...bj has never looked better than at the time while he was under marinovich !marv is a revolutionist and excactly what bj needs, and his team even admitted that...when he ditched marv he lost to frenkie and his decline unfortunatelly started...by is one of my favourite fighters and i'm so disappointed he's not pushing himself like he did with marv around him...
@cagepotato - bob sapp is fighting the guy i know(maro perak) in dubrovnik croatia on december 16th, my hometown...so if you wanna run an article about it, just go ahead.maro was robbed against jeff monson in their last fight becaus he wasn't allowed to use kicks..he was supposed to be allowed to use it up until the very fight...when they entered the ring, the ref told him that he can't use kicks...so monson just laid an praid him...a disgrace..the winner of that fight booked a strikeforce contract

I can't think of a fight that I have been more excited for, sucks that one of them has to lose. I agree that this fight depends on BJ's training/conditioning, if he comes in shape it will be a hell of a fight and for me it is really close to call. I am giving a slight advantage to BJ because I think he has the tougher chin and the heavier hands but if Diaz can keep it at his length it could be a long fight for BJ. I'm leaning towards a TKO for BJ early on but if this fight goes the distance I would think Diaz gets his hand raised, can't wait.

I'm definitely looking forward to this fight more than GSP-Condit. I hope BJ Penn really buckles down and trains. Diaz is always in shape, but if they're both in shape BJ will take it.

He hasn't been submitted in his entire career and has as good of ground skills as Bj if not well... yeah.. So I don't see him being submitted

I agree with Skeletor. Style match-ups between BJ, Diaz, and Condit all seem exciting. Not as much with GSP, since he is better than the rest of them. Though of the 3, I like Condit fighting GSP the best. He presents a more unpredictable fight.
RwilsonR- October 13, 2011 at 5:31 pm
BJ wins this all day long. Well, 'all day long' may be inaccurate. BJ wins this for the first 5 minutes. If he can muster 3 more minutes before his lazy ass gets tired, then this is his fight.
skeletor- October 13, 2011 at 5:04 pm
I think any combo of these two plus condit is more exciting than any of them fighting GSP. Not hating on GSP, just think these three match up really well
XENOPHON- October 13, 2011 at 4:54 pm
BJ was stymied by Edgar...why speed and slipperiness. Diaz is slick, but not that slick. He's slow, and doesn't have the power to phase BJ.
.
I am with munche.

Definitely not alone on being more excited for BJ vs. Diaz.
I think Diaz uses his range and superior conditioning to do what he does best, land 80 punches a round and keep up a pace that BJ can't handle. If BJ get's inside and knocks Diaz down, unlike Daley, he has the ability to finish the fight via submission.
Great match up but I see Diaz winning.
Lesnarischamp- October 13, 2011 at 3:17 pm
yeah, I'm definitely more excited for Penn-Diaz than the likely one-sided affair of the title bout. Outside of the lesnar/overeem bout, I can't think of another fight I'm looking forward to more.
rngeorgeh- October 13, 2011 at 3:15 pm
Seriously?
munche- October 13, 2011 at 2:23 pm
I'm really excited for this fight. Both guys annoy the piss out of me, throw crisp punches and are really hard to knock out. So I'll get to watch them punch the shit out of each other for a while, and that's good times.

Picking BJ to win though, he's a faster, better version of Nick. Only advantage Diaz has is the range.
