Video: Brandon Vera Compares Muay Thai vs. Karate Kicks on Sports Science

(Video courtesy YouTube/Fight Science)

Brandon Vera appeared on Sport Science, (which must have been filmed prior to his face-breaking loss to Jon Jones on March 21 since his mug looks pretty normal) to compare the muay thai kicks of Shogun to the karate kicks of Machida

The episode is pretty interesting and the results of "The Truth’s" experiment of repeatedly kicking the head off of a crash test dummy revealed a few things.

1. Muay thai kicks are more powerful than karate kicks

2. Karate kicks are faster than muay thai kicks

3. I never want to be at the receiving end of a Vera kick — especially not one to my head or extremely handsome face.

His technique wasn't very good in the karate kick either. Look at his back foot. That accounts for a lot of the loss of power.

The karate kick was only faster because he took an extra step when he did the muay thai kick as if he was doing a switch kick.

He was probably excited to be on this show since he gets to be on tv and not get knocked out.

Brandon "Da Toof" Vera

Interesting. This video conclusively proves that television "science" shows conclusively prove absolutely nothing.

Hi, I'm John Brenkus, and today, we'll be looking at the Shogun Vs.Machida rematch, with the help of a fighter who would undoubtedly lose to either of them... Brandon; take it away.

Yeah, looking at it like that, I can see why they went with the "one of the UFC's best light heavyweights" line instead. I guess this video shows that sometimes [puts on CSI Miami sunglasses] the truth hurts.

YEEEEAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!

@gui-uh-teen

I agree with you, he look like he gave it 50% on the karate and 100% on muay thai. You could tell by the way he threw the kicks and the velocity he threw them in.

It just sucks this dude had so much potential...and then just completely shit the bed.

Old_Bald_and_Irish- May 13, 2010 at 4:37 pm
Finally.

An opponent Vera can finish.

What's a D1ck4? Filling in for 513 that's what! Nice...I have been filling in for him as well.
Dagnut- May 13, 2010 at 4:26 pm
Should of tested how much force a Muay kick to the body generates..anyone who's trained muay thai will know head kicks are much rare occurrence than in Karate.. although I've never trained Karate so I could be talking through my arse..
D1ck4- May 13, 2010 at 4:23 pm
Ken Shamrock kicks harder than that.
GUI-uh-TEEN- May 13, 2010 at 3:40 pm
It looked like he wasn't really trying for the Karate kick. That would make sense because he practices Muay Thai...
VisitingDeadAncestors- May 13, 2010 at 3:16 pm
if only all of Brandon Vera's opponents had just stood there for the Muay Thai to kick in.
jgrant- May 13, 2010 at 3:13 pm
OH so this is what he meant when he said he was bringing the old Vera back.
Almost North- May 13, 2010 at 3:02 pm
So when does Jon Jones come on to demonstrate the difference between an illegal face smashing elbow and a legal face smashing elbow?
Kimbos Bread- May 13, 2010 at 3:00 pm
What a dummy!

@Dickface
Congrats you got the joke.
@KimboSlice
Second.
@Mike Russell
Machida needs orbital bone surgery and I hope he does not have to go back and forth.....I'm perfectly fine with Vera being out for a while on the other hand.
KimboSlice- May 13, 2010 at 2:47 pm
*double post.
KimboSlice- May 13, 2010 at 2:46 pm
By best light-heavyweight, they must have meant the best at losing.
KimboSlice- May 13, 2010 at 2:45 pm
@mckellion

lol I saw that no one had commented, so I made the first comment, but changed it because people frown upon that here (as do I, but I just never had the opportunity to do it haha).

@Mike

Dang he's still having surgery? It kind of makes you sad, yet at the same time not because of his blaccent, which i'm pretty sure everyone can agree upon here is annoying.
