Video: Chael Sonnen Q&A Session Before UFC 133

Props: Zombie Prophet

If you were lucky enough to be in Philly for the lead up to UFC 133, you were treated to a Q&A session with none other than Chael Sonnen. True to form, Chael Sonnen gave some brutally honest potentially scripted answers to the fans. And of course, the obligatory praise for Dana White, going as far as saying that Dana White would end the recession if he was president. Really. Not to imply that Chael would ever use plants for a Q&A session, but his response to “What happened in California? (9:52 mark)” seemed pre-packaged, even for an eagle among turkeys like Chael Sonnen.

Some brief highlights:

On whether he’d rather fight Yushin Okami or Anderson Silva:

“Well, I’m going to have to fight both of those guys. Yushin and I have fought before, Yushin and I fought as recently as two days ago. We are definitely going to meet up again in the Octagon, there’s no way around that.

Look, I am the UFC champion. That belt is nothing more than a piece of tin when it’s around Anderson Silva’s waist. I am the people’s champion, I am the linear champion and I am the best damn middleweight to ever live.

So, after Brian Stann and I do business, Dana and I will sit down like we always do, we’ll review a whole bunch of Strikeforce contracts. I imagine my paper airplane collection will get a lot bigger, if you guys know what I mean **ED. note: Damn, too soon**. And then we will decide if I will be granting Anderson Silva a shot at my championship.”

On his attempt to fight Lyoto Machida:

“Look, I tried to lure him into a fight because I was secretly trying to get a bunch of attention and fight an easy match. That upset Joe Silva, now he called in the Marine and I got to go deal with that.”

On his future in politics:

“ …My biggest goal? I’d like to see Brian Stann get elected to the presidency of the United States, if you’d really like to know.”

Goldberg is so annoying...he makes me embarrassed to be a UFC fan. Exhibit A: check out the video at 9:28 mark

@ Griff, I totally agree except that I don't think Anderson Silva falls in the same category as GSP and other safety first fighters, Silva is a finisher when the opportunity presents itself. Your point about Chaels 24 minutes to Andersons 8 seconds is fucking spot on

I love Chael Sonnen, but he's a salesman inside and outside the octagon. Listen to him talk about beating Silva for 25 minutes until Silva wrapped his legs around his neck for 8 seconds. Entertaining until you think about it for a second. Despite "dominating" Silva for 25 minutes, he couldn't finish him. His 25 minutes of "MMA" couldn't finish Silva, but Silva's eight seconds could. He's right, MMA is not exactly fighting, which is exactly why his criticism of Fedor is unfortunate. Say what you will about Fedor's place in history, but the guy is the most entertaining fighter in MMA today. He fights, more and more sloppily, but he fights. He doesn't use the rules of the match to grind out a win - the Greg Jackson rule book. I'd rather see him fight anybody; as opposed to GSP, Silva, etc., fighting anybody. Can't blame these guys - their using their strengths to capitalize on the weaknesses of MMAs current rules.

The wall-n-stall and lay-n-pray really weren't in the lexicon in Pride. The UFC is better at getting the best to fight each other, but Pride matches were more entertaining.

O.K. Let me have it folks...

NO matter what, he can play a crowd. and he is right, except he beat on silva for 24 minutes. if he coulda held one more minute he would be completely right. Now put Goldbergs quote into sonnen, hard work beats talent when talent refuses hard work.

I used to think Sonnen was an arrogant ass. I still do, but now I find him hilarious. His shtick grew on me and I actually think it's funny now. And SomeJadedHipster is completely right: the bit about the Noguerias petting a bus and feeding it a carrot is classic.

Poor guy watched too much wrestling on TV growing up. If he was 50-100 pounds heavier he would be in the WWE right now.

I love Chael Sonnen.

There, I said it. What a total asshat, but the man knows the hell out of his character. The Anderson Silva buildup was flat awesome, and his continuing war against Brazil is spotted with some truly creative stuff (come on-the Nogueiras feeding a carrot to a bus? fantastic). His man-crush on Stann is a perfect addition to the Sonnen character. It makes perfect sense, and so far he's executing it perfectly.

PS Sweet captcha, CP. Totally love the awesome space wasting changes you've made to the site too.
