If you can’t wait until tonight to watch the Countdown to UFC 129, we got you covered.
Here’s a summary of most interesting points from the episode:
• Shields didn’t start training until after college where he was a wrestling standout
• According to his wrestling coach, he wasn’t the most talented or the most athletic guy on the team but he was persistent and hard working
• Jake went to Chuck Liddell‘s gym thinking he could beat up “The Iceman” and got handled by the UFC light heavyweight
• After that, he went to Cesar Gracie’s gym and made up for his lack of skill on the ground with hard work and became one of the best students on the team
• GSP is training like an Olympic sprinter and gymnast for this bout
• St-Pierre went back to train with Freddie Roach in Las Vegas
• He claims to know Shields better than he knows himself, which is pretty creepy
• Georges has been training with Roger Gracie and he feels the experience will prepare him for anything Shields may hve up his sleeve
• He expects “an explosion” and that the bout will be the fight of the year
• Aldo started training because he lost a lot of street fights after defending himself from bigger bullies
• He started in Capoeira, but preferred BJJ
• He moved away from him to live and train at Nova Uniao’s gym in Manaus where he slept on the floor and went hungry some nights
• Hominick’s camp feels Aldo is the pound-for-pound best in the sport
• His first pro bout was for a title — and he won
• Mark’s first fight in the UFC was a weight class up from his natural bracket — and he beat Yves Edwards, who was the number one UFC lightweight contender at the time
• In spite of winning two fights in the Octagon, Hominick was not called back to fight for the UFC for a year-and-a-half
• “The Machine” got word of his first WEC bout a week before his wedding and he was forced to train on his honeymoon
