Video: Floyd Mayweather’s Controversial 4th-Round Knockout of Victor Ortiz

(Props: gsemajt)

Floyd Mayweather upped his perfect boxing record to 42-0 last night with a fourth-round knockout of Victor Ortiz, a win that earned him the WBC Welterweight World Title — but it wouldn’t be Money May without a little controversy.

Mayweather controlled the majority of the first three rounds with his trademark speed, outlanding his younger opponent. The fourth frame was a back-and-forth slugfest, opening with a furious assault by Floyd. But Ortiz turned the tables and battered Mayweather against the ropes in the final minute. Unfortunately, the 24-year-old let his emotions get the better of him.

As you can see in the video above, Ortiz blatantly head-butts Mayweather with 14 seconds left in the round. The referee spots the foul and immediately separates the fighters. By way of apology, Ortiz walks over to Mayweather to give him a hug and kiss. That’s strike one.

The ref pulls Ortiz away to deduct a point, and Ortiz goes back to a still-pissed Mayweather to give him a “my bad” glove tap. That’s strike two.

The referee separates them again, and calls the action back in. But Ortiz — sweet, simple Ortiz — wants to give Mayweather another apology-hug. Mayweather pushes him off, stuns him with a left hook, and puts him out with a follow-up right straight. Ortiz does his best to get to his feet, but can’t pull it off.

It’s a moment that underscores the “protect yourself at all times” concept inherent in all combat sports. Mayweather knocked out Ortiz at a moment when he was completely within his rights to do so. Just because a fighter wants to hug you in the middle of fight, doesn’t mean you have to let him. But in the post-fight interview, it’s clear that HBO boxing commentator Larry Merchant feels that Mayweather’s actions were unfair, and that Floyd should have respected the “ceremony” of the situation.

When Merchant keeps pressing him on the issue, Mayweather snaps. “You know what I’m gonna do? ‘Cuz you don’t never give me a fair shake. You know that? So I’m gonna go and let you talk to Victor Ortiz, alright? I’m through. Put somebody else up here to give me an interview. You never give me a fair shake! HBO need to fire you, you don’t know shit about boxing! You ain’t shit. You’re not shit!”

“I wish I was 50 years younger and I’d kick your ass,” Merchant replies.

Stay classy, boxing.

I'm glad that with this fight out of the way Mayweather can get back to his busy schedule of ducking Manny Pacquiao.

And yeah, like everyone says, it was classes but legal. The most hilarious part is when FMJ glances at the ref to make sure he's not looking before clocking Ortiz. You know, just in case.

floyd would have won anyway. this is just a quick jump to the final decision
Chuck_W- September 18, 2011 at 10:54 pm
These combat sports experts are saying it was cheap to hit Ortiz while his hands were down?!? WTF is that? Shouldn't the question be why were Ortiz's hands down during a FIGHT. Floyds an ass and he is ducking the only real competition out there for him but come on man.

First, I think Floyd looked so good last night that Manny would not beat him if they fought. Second, what ortiz did was far dirtier than what floyd did. If the roles would have been reversed and floyd threw the headbutt i guarantee everyone would be saying FMJ deserved what he got because people just love to hate the guy. And lastly Larry Merchant and Max Kellerman always seem to be condescending and disrespectful in their interviews. You hardly ever ( if at all) see Joe Rogan do that in his post fight interviews even when he disagrees with an outcome.

Did ortiz act outside the rules Yes
Did Mayweather act outside the rules No

@ Blaphtome, completely agree, I also saw the earlier headbutt, Ortiz had it coming to him. Mayweather was handling Ortiz and it was only a matter of time befor Floyd put him to bed, I'm upset with the finish because after watching just the 1st round I was expecting a spectacular KO from Floyd. That ref should be nowhere near a ring again, he didn't put them in neutral corners and wasn't paying attention to the fight. That said he did signal them together before the final bro hug, so Ortiz should have been ready to bang. I really think Ortiz was shocked at himself and in bewilderment after the headbutt and he forgot this was a top level boxing match, as oppose to a fight with a friend at a drunken BBQ, apologize all you want but the fight continues. As for Larry Merchant, sure Floyd is an arrogant POS but he is the best boxer in the game and Merchant speaks to him with no respect. Merchant does this with many boxers who don't want to give him timely media friendly responses to his obvious questions and it's not his place to tell champions how to express themselves. Overall there seems to be a lot of negativity in boxing comentary and I'm not sure if it is the best way to win fans back. Also while I'm at it, Floyd looked superb last night and I really would like to see him in a fight with Pacquiao

Blaphtome pretty much nailed this on the button Mayweather is a huge douchebag, everyone knows that and we aren't discussing that. Was it a cheap shot? Sure, was it legal? Yes. What did Ortiz think was going to happen when he head butted Floyd? He's the one who opened Pandoras box Mayweather was ok with just beating his ass on the cards. Not to mention he was up four rounds on the cards. So who really expected Mayweather to fight fair once someone else violated the rules? Fuck it. No rematch FMJ Wins.

That was firm, but fair.

I'll preface my comment here by stating that I freaking hate FMJ. That said; he absolutely did the right thing. Those who think otherwise don't understand the gravity of the situation. FMJ did not open that door, he closed it. Some punk who hardly deserved to be in the same ring decided to go outside the rules and use a blatantly dirty, extremely dangerous tactic and he's supposed to think about fair play with this faggot who has no regard for FMJ's career and livelihood. That dude attempted that earlier in the 4th as well, and FMJ is supposed to what? Just hope he can get through the fight with no facial fractures, scarring, etc. FMJ eliminated the threat at his first opportunity and regardless of how we felt about the way it looked or whether or not any of this was in his thought process it was still the right action for himself and the people who depend on him. That is all.

Anarchy. This was rediculous. The head butt was completely unprofessional. I mean all those people paid to see a good fight and this is the crap that goes down.

Ortiz dropping his guard...WTH? c'mon man. stay focused!
Ballkick- September 18, 2011 at 3:39 pm
FMJ will end up in prison soon with a temper like that. The head-butt was a flagrant asshole move I agree, but instead of finishing the fight (which he was handily winning anyways) on his own skills FMJ acted like a cunt and dished out his own asshole move.
Manny and FMJ need to fight ASAP, cause Floyd will get his face smashed in...what a dirty bit of cheating that was,.... by both combatants.
A black eye for boxing........which makes me happy.
TehBeej- September 18, 2011 at 2:10 pm
I've gotta agree. Mayweather, Ortiz, Merchant, and Ortega are all pieces of shit.
intercept440- September 18, 2011 at 2:06 pm
well since everyone else is tossing there 2 cents around ill lump mine in the hat also.
#1 fuck ortiz and the blatant headbutt, he is a classless P.O.S.

#2 Fuck Mayweather for bieng a lassless P.O.S. bully womanbeater claimed not to be involved in a skating rink shooting with one of his homies he later claim he didnt even know.

That being said there both assholes, BUT according to the unified rules of boxing, once the ref starts the fight its GAME ON. and you must protect yourself at all times. was the K.O. cheap? Yea. was it legal ? Yea.
that what you get when you put two classless fucks in a square and tell them to beat the hell out of each other for 25 millions dollars.
chajah808- September 18, 2011 at 1:02 pm
Due to the rise of mma and the lack of good fights in boxing due shady and greedy promoters, Its one of the best things to happen to boxing because the drama and controversy will have everyone spouting their opinions on mayweather and the every looming discussion of if, when, the speculations of a super fight between manny And mayweather, and who will be the ultimate champion of modern day boxing..
TheCanadian- September 18, 2011 at 12:40 pm
Why does anyone even care? This fight was a nothing fight. Mayweather doing anothing waste of time payday fight. He wont fight Pacquiao. He knows it, we know it, and Pacquiao knows it. He'll dodge him for a few more fights and retire undefeated. He'll still wind up broke one way or another so at least people who hate him have that to look forward to. Buddy posts pictures on twitter of him with his personal hair dresser he "takes everywhere" getting his hair cut on his private jet. The only reason he still fights is because its easier to dodge Pacquiao then it is to stop buying everything in sight. I had no interest in this fight beyond wiki'ing it to confirm it was a UD. I knew something was up when it was a KO, and what a shocker, he KOs a guy with his hands down.
Kimbos Bread- September 18, 2011 at 12:09 pm
When you first see the bout, you think Mayweather is a cunt for what he did. But when you think about it and you re-watch it you realize that Ortiz is a piece of shit, and Mayweather is an over-paid, classless monkey (not in the racial sense). As well, Larry Merchant is also a piece of shit (see how he puts his hand over Mayweather's mouth and interrupts him during the interview).

In sum, they are all pieces of shit as RWilsonR said.
Seoul Brother- September 18, 2011 at 12:03 pm
I agree with hotsaucemonster. I fucking hate Mayweather, and I hope he gets crippled or killed in a bar fight. More than that, I hate that anything could possibly make me be in his corner over this Mongolian Cluster Fuck.
hotsaucemonster- September 18, 2011 at 11:33 am
i absolutely hate mayweather but i dont blame him for doing what he did, its a boxing match not a handholding competition.
mt59801- September 18, 2011 at 11:23 am
This is why boxing is dead. A bunch lying cheating overpaid assholes with how many belts now?
noname- September 18, 2011 at 11:11 am
What was Ortiz apologizing for? He intentionally headbutted Mayweather. He must have just been sorry that the ref saw it.
slapnuts8- September 18, 2011 at 10:54 am
stay classy mayweather, beating women, chasing former entorage homies on the road and getting in an 80yr old mans face trying to punk him! You are one class act setting a great example for kids in sports. But I have to say Ortiz deserved to be ko'd for his blatant headbutt.
Seoul Brother- September 18, 2011 at 10:43 am
Sometimes these things happen in professional boxing.
RwilsonR- September 18, 2011 at 10:28 am
The ref is really the one to blame. He was not clear at all about the restart. Ortiz, Mayweather, that ref Cortez, and Larry Merchant are all pieces of shit, but boxing is still good enough to be showcased in NY because they wear those fancy tuxedos to class up the joint.

I really hope the UFC replaces their announcers before they are old as dirt. This guy questioning Mayweather sounds like he has trouble forming a sentence and I just want him to spit it out already.

Uhh, Larry Merchant maybe old, but hes knows and has probably forgotten more about boxing then 90% of the world, and he's actually a pretty decent guy, Thought it was fuckin awesome to hear him talk shit to Mayweather, not too many would do that, "If I was fiddy years younger, I'd whip yer ass!!" GOtta love it :D Imagine Gus or Goldie sayin that to Rampage or someone :P
dthrckt- September 18, 2011 at 10:23 am
@mmaandrew34 I'm as white as a hospital bed sheet, and a bigot, but the head butt that cut mayweather was a cheap shot, the KO was legal payback
