[VIDEO] Forrest Griffin Discusses His Retirement

(Video via MMA Fighting)

After UFC 160, Dana White announced that Forrest Griffin has retired. The announcement came as a surprise to the MMA world.

Griffin won the first season of The Ultimate Fighter and went on to become the first truly unified light heavyweight champion of the world when he won the UFC 205 pound belt. His last fight was a win over Tito Ortiz in July of 2012.

White also announced that Griffin and his fellow TUF 1 finalist Stephan Bonnar will both be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame next month. Griffin spoke with MMA Fighting last night after the announcement and spoke about why he made the decision to retire and what he’ll do next.

Agree with squidink here. He may not be the greatest, but he was the champ and that fight was one of the biggest factors in the UFC's breakthrough into the mainstream. Bonnar maybe slightly less deserving as he was never a champion but hey, it is the hall of fame, not the hall of achievement.

Algiers: Haters gonna hate.

"That one fight" put the UFC back on the map after the organization had been near the point of disappearing just a couple years before. Had Griffin and Bonnar not gone out there and knocked the shit out of each other like that for three rounds, the UFC and the sport as a whole may have been in a very different place at this point.
