Video Hype — ‘Countdown to UFC 123: Rampage vs. Machida’

(Props: GollyIE)

UFC 123 may not feature any title fights, but it does feature four hungry ex-champions. Headliner Rampage Jackson says he’s seen it all in his long career, and he’s not expecting any surprises from Lyoto Machida. Tiki Ghosn chimes in, predictably: “It’s Karate. Karate we found out sucked years ago. I think everybody got mesmerized with [Machida's] movement. Nobody cuts him off, nobody tries to cut him off.” We hear more about Rampage’s decision to move his camp closer to home in Orange County, but no real explanation for the specific presence of Lance Gibson. Coincidentally, Machida has been preparing not too far away in San Diego, at Team Nogueria Gym. He says this fight is all about who imposes their gameplan. As opposed to other fights, where gameplans don’t really matter.

After the jump: ‘Countdown’ continues, with a nice history of the rivalry between Matt Hughes and BJ Penn — from Matt’s “big man on campus” prime, to the loss that threw him into a Sin City tailspin, to his rematch redemption. Hughes has now eaten up three-consecutive Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belts, and is looking to make Penn #4. Meanwhile, Penn is in Honolulu, with a head full of smoking needles, trying to clear his head after two upset losses to Frankie Edgar. To see the segment on Sotiropoulos vs. Lauzon, head to UFC.com.

There is an old samurai saying; 'Tiki Goshen is a tremendous douche-bag.'

I would say we have a total of 2 hungry ex-champs on this upcoming card and that's being generous to Matt Hughes.
BJ Penn is not done to me, but he seems far from hungry.
Rampage is not done either, but he will never reclaim the belt at 205 in the UFC, the division is too stacked with younger, faster and more well rounded fighters.

Machida will win by unanimous decision and the fight will look like Ortiz v. Machida.
I can't call the Hughes/Penn fight, way too many variables, but we will find out quickly which BJ shows up to fight on Saturday.

I never thought I would hear Rampage say "He can say whatever he want's too I'm going to do my talking in the cage." That is either a really good sign for him or a really bad sign, I guess we will find out this weekend.

Hate to say this (cause I am a huge Rampage fan) but Rampage doesn't seem to have that fire in him anymore..he seems like he's in it only for the paycheck.
Lyoto by Knockout rd.2 :(

dranokills- November 17, 2010 at 6:06 pm
I hope Rampage knocks the piss outta lyoto, and who cares who wins between BJ and Hughes, they are both douches...may the biggest douche get squashed I guess.

Anyone else notice Tim Silvia near the end of BJ v Hughes?
I found it pretty hilarious.

Anyone else concerned that Troy "Rudeboy" Mandaloniz is BJ's Head Trainer?!?

That dude could barely cut it on TUF, now he's training one a former champ. The pickins must be slim in Hilo.

Ultimate Elusive Guy was funny the first time. No need to have that soundbite twice in a 10 minute clip.

The first 1:20 of that vid is awesome. One of the better UFC Hype Video© intros I've seen.

How many fights are left on Hughes' contract?

DazedNConfused- November 17, 2010 at 3:29 pm
ahah no doubt. I love how Rampage laughs off the fact that his kids will hate him when they're older. Way to go Quinton. Another reason for them to pursue a life of crime/skankism, over the most obvious one (Them all having names somewhat related to their fathers nickname of Rampage)

Great...more black kids who don't know who their father is.

I don't know about bigger but pretty damn close. Hughes has come out and shown he can still hang with some formidable opponents. I feel sorry for BJ because I really like him as a fighter, but this is totally Hughes fight to win.

After BJ changed his training up after his two dominating performances against Florian and Sanchez he hasn't seemed the same. I think it's because he's his own captain and trainer and everyone in that camp is too scared to even give him any tips without the fear he'll blackout or something. How the hell are you supposed to improve or push yourself in training with a camp like that? I believe the underdog bet on Hughes is a huge cash-in.

As for Machida and Rampage... errr it's pretty safe to assume Machida should fuck Rampage up. His elusive style is too shitty of a matchup against Rampages robotic and straightforward boxing. If Rampage decided to actually go back to his roots a bit and throw Machida on his ass, i think he could squeak out a decision, but i'll have to pick over my man Rampage for this one.

On the betting lines that is, while I'm watching the fight i'll be rooting for Rampage to come back in the form he was in against Henderson for his first title defense after fuckin' up Liddell. I believe that's been his most impressive UFC fight, he went 5 intense rounds with Henderson and was on top lots, using his wrestling and striking together, not just picking one.

Am i the only one who thinks Penn V Hughes is a bigger fight?

There are so many Red Bull and Piss jokes to be made here, I truly don't know where to start.

Shane Darwin- November 17, 2010 at 1:53 pm
I have a feeling this will actually be a pretty good card for once. There's been too many bad ones recently. Something has to give.
danomite- November 17, 2010 at 1:42 pm
is rampage trying to drive up the betting lines against himself? He basically said, "I'm gonna follow the gameplan that everybody who lost to Lyoto followed". good luck with that.

also, are all british trainers useless or is it just the ones they show on these primetime shows? I've honestly never seen a british trainer on here who's gameplan consists of anything other than boxing. Fighting a wrestler? Box him. Fighting a karate guy? Box him. Fighting a professional boxer? Box him. and did he really say rashad had a better chin than lyoto? lyoto has been knocked out once, which also happened to be the only time he's been dropped too. rashad's been dropped in all of his last 3 fights i think.
danomite- November 17, 2010 at 1:31 pm
that quote from Tiki pretty much sums up why he sucks as a fighter.

Watch the new Ultimate Elusive Guy Championship! Featuring Lyoto Machida, Kalib Starnes, Frankie Edgar, and Stefan Struve when he is turned sideways!
BONGTAR- November 17, 2010 at 1:28 pm
I hear a lot of BJ hating (I hate to even string those words together) on this site, but I still kinda like the dude just as a fighter. I don't care about the personality. I'm kind of a dick sometimes, so why would I judge?
nickyroose- November 17, 2010 at 1:21 pm
Imma make you puke up that piss son.
