Video Hype: ‘Machida vs. Shogun 2′ Extended Preview

(Props: MMAVIDS10)

The UFC’s next pay-per-view card goes down May 8th in Montreal, featuring the light-heavyweight title rematch between Lyoto Machida and Mauricio "Shogun" Rua — both of whom haven’t competed since their first fight last October. This extended preview acknowledges the controversy about the decision, which Shogun lost despite the fact that he clearly landed more strikes. Following two fantastic knockout victories over Thiago Silva and Rashad Evans, Machida’s title reign was immediately put in question after the Shogun fight, and the long layoff hasn’t helped his stock. Once again, he’ll need to convince fans of his merits. And once again, Dana White sells a fight as a matchup between two guys who "don’t like to go to the ground." Well that’s a relief. I wouldn’t want any of that grappling stuff to distract from the kickboxing match I’m paying for.

In the co-main event, top welterweight contenders Josh Koscheck and Paul Daley do battle in what could turn out to be a #1 contender’s match. In fact, there’s a rumor floating around that the winner of this fight will coach opposite Georges St. Pierre on TUF 12. If Koscheck employs his superior wrestling against "Semtex," he’ll dictate the fight. If he lets his ego force him into a striking war with Paul Daley, he could get his fraggle-lookin’ head knocked off. Any predictions on UFC 113′s headlining fights? And what about the TUF 10 castmates match between Kimbo Slice and Matt "Meathead" Mitrione?

Machida / Rua should be a fucken classic because I doubt if either guy wants to leave it with the Judges

Kos/Daly Kos should have to much for Daley and if Daley thinks he doesn't need to work on his ground game Kos may just show him why he should

Kimbo/ Meathead be like watchin a parking lot brawl, Kimbo by thumb to the eye socket

MACHIDA/SHOGUN WILL BE GOOD! I THINK IT ALL DEPENDS ON WHICH SHOGUN SHOWS UP THAT NIGHT! IN THE END, I AM LEANING TOWARDS THE DRAGON! I THINK HE FINDS AN ANSWER FOR THE LEG KICKS THIS GO ROUND.

I LIKE PAUL DALY'S EXPLOSIVENESS HOWEVER I MUST GO WITH THE SUPERIOR GROUND GAME OF KOSCHECK. LIKE HIM OR NOT, KOSCHECK IS A GREAT GRAPPLER WITH ABOVE AVERAGE STRIKES AS WELL. HE ISNT AFRAID TO TAKE A BLOW AND I BELIEVE HE WILL PUSH THE PACE AND TAKE IT TO THE POMPOUS ARROGANT BRIT ON THE MAT!

AFTER THE TUF SERIES, I THINK KIMBO WAS EXPOSED A LITTLE. HE DISAPPOINTED ME A GREAT DEAL WHEN HE COWARDED OUT OF THE JAMES MCSWEENY FIGHT. JUST LIKE BJ PENN FOUGHT EDGAR WHEN NOT 100%, HE STILL ANSWERED THE CHALLENGE. RARELY IS ANY FIGHTER OR ATHLETE FOR THAT MATTER TRULY 100%. SO TO ME, KIMBO IS NOTHING MORE THAN A HYPE/RATINGS MACHINE! WITH THAT BEING SAID, I STILL HOPE HE KILLS MITRIONE. MEATHEAD'S SCHTICK ON THE SHOW LITERALLY DROVE ME INSANE! ONE DAY HE WAS HURT, ONE DAY HE WAS OK. I VIEWED HIS ANTICS AS SOMEONE WHO WAS LOOKING TO AVOID THE GRIND OF TRAINING! WHICH EQUATES TO HIM BEING A PUSSY!

Something about these promo's always makes me think they belong on aol.com or something instead of an MMA site.

What kind of person that goes to an MMA site needs to get hyped about Shogun/Machida 2?

I guess its interesting for youtube junkies and fans of rhetoric, and it doesn't hurt anything. But it always seems just a little weird to me.

I agree with shartacus. Machida should want to come out to finish this fight in a very convincing manner to quiet down his naysayers.

Maybe he needs to rethink his whole drinking his own piss thing?

Shogun will probably come out like a rabid animal to show why he should have won the first match.

Should be a great fight to watch...whoever wins.

Kimbo cracks me up. I like watching that guy swing for the fences, but he is so limited with his other skills, or lack thereof , most fighters just take him down at will. Kimbo should rematch Big D from his early days...."ALL DAY....ALL DAY SON".

Kos...I hated him on The Ultimate Fighter 1 because he was a douche and instigated trouble with big dumb Bobby Southworth, but now I actually like him. I think he has matured and calmed down a lot since that show. He is a hard worker and fights a lot more than most fighters do in a year.

After the last fights dubious decision, I see Machida coming out to really try to finish this fight. That combined with the fact his dad karate chopped the shit out of him for besmirching the family honor should be a real motivator.

Peckawoodd-
Thanks for clearing that up. All this time I thought he was an uncertified wannabe killah. I'm glad he got that practical exam by the nuts.

Relevant post:
I wanna see Shogun/Machida II because I think both guys are gonna have to show up to prove something. Machida needs to shut the door on that last fight, and Shogun needs to clearly win this fight to minimize the loss. It's gonna be one hell of a night. Kos/Daley is gonna be a battle. I like Koscheck, but, he's gotta get this one to the ground. His ego can't take another beating on the feet. Mitrione/Fergie is gonna be a slow paced eventual tko. It could go either way.

A bit off subject, but does anybody know an establishment where I can watch the WEC ppv in Las Vegas this weekend?

MACHIDA by down, diagonal, forward punch
KOSCHECK by Mugatu hairstyle a la will ferrel
KIMBO by kimbo-plex rolling into a top-control gogoplata, transitioned into an armbar, combined into a sharpshooter-half-nelson-half-boston crab combo
SteveyJBond- April 21, 2010 at 10:19 am
Flying armbar FTW! They could call it the Kimboplata.
alexpower- April 21, 2010 at 10:18 am
Do you think Machida realizes that they hired a retard to dub over him?
Neggar Wants a Watermelon- April 21, 2010 at 10:17 am
I want Koscheck to win because he's slightly less black than Daley.
iDestroy- April 21, 2010 at 10:08 am
Shogun by violent decapitation.
Kos by however the hell he wants cuz he's the effin man.
Meathead by ko.
Nealio- April 21, 2010 at 9:56 am
Dunno why everyone hates on Koscheck, except for the fact that CP hates on him so it must propagate down. It must be the cool thing to do, kinda like calling people "bitches" or saying that calling people "bitches" quit being funny 3 years ago.
I would also think Kos as the advantage because if you look at fights of the past with similar style matchups it goes to the wrestler more times than not. Hopefully it will be a war, not a L&P fest or a 15 second KO like the Irvin/Alexander fight (which was supposed to be a bang fest).
Japanadian- April 21, 2010 at 9:52 am
funny how paul daley thinks that he doesn't need a ground game. i guess he hasn't fought any strong grapplers. Oh wait he did he fought Jake Shields and lost by submission, just like he lost most of his fights. Kos should take daley down and just embarrass him by exposing his ground game. Kos is an idiot if he bothers standing with Daley, take a lesson from GSP "fight them where they are the weakest"
peckawoodd- April 21, 2010 at 9:46 am
Machida v. Shogun could go either way. If Machida has not improved or adapted his game since his last fight, in other words, if he goes out and does the exact same thing as last time he will lose. Shogun is just too tough/a certified killah to be pitter-pattered to death (a la Rashad Evans.) I would not include this fight in my parlay

I've got Koscheck over Daley, reluctantly. I don't like him as a person or even too much as a fighter but there's no denying he's a beast. I thought Johnson would run over him, nope. Shit I wouldn't be surprised if he out-struck Daley seeing that his wrestling background gives him that type of douchy yet wholly necessary and effective comfort. But here's to hoping that Daley cracks him over the head with a Queen Margot's Famous Whiskey bottle.

Kimbo v. Mitrione? Phewwwwwwwwww I"ve got Mitrione. As dumb as he comes off he's a big, tough, hard-hitting guy that seems like he can take a punch. Kimbo is undersized and I don't see him out-boxing Meathead or even hitting him with a highlight type AfroPuff-inspired right hand. Big Retard got this, dogg.

@ shartacus

That bitches line quit being funny 3 years ago...
FlyingGoGos- April 21, 2010 at 9:35 am
I say this everywhere.
Machida won the first fight, he will win the second one.
Also, I hate Koscheck but I'll be dammed if I don't want to see him win. Hes a great fighter to watch. I hope his fight with Daley is a war.
imabigfan- April 21, 2010 at 9:32 am
How do you keep Koscheck from jumping on the bed? Or is that too easy?

Seriously, I can't explain my absolute disdain for that guy. He's a hell of a fighter, one that I think deserves his chance to get clowned by GSP, but damn is he fun to hate on.

Is it possible that Koscheck is the unfortunate product of a muppet's ill-advised night of debauchery with a guido?
BigCountrysCholesterol- April 21, 2010 at 9:20 am
I would pay to see Shogun Machida 2 even if the only undercard fight was Kalib Starnes squaring off against his own clone. Can't wait.
shartacus- April 21, 2010 at 9:07 am
Kimbo by Rumino Sato style flying armbar 33 seconds into the first round, bitches.
