Video Hype: ‘Vera vs Jones’ Extended Preview

Jon Jones is at that point of his career where the nut-hugging is at its most pure and intense. In the first few minutes of this Countdown video for next Sunday’s UFC on Versus show, everyone from Joe Rogan to Dana White to Rashad Evans to Greg Jackson describe Bones as a freakishly athletic star with a perfect mindset, unbelievable talent, and endless potential. But frankly, Brandon Vera has heard it all before: "Jon ‘Bones’ Jones, the second comin’ of Jesus Christ…I don’t believe all the hype, and ‘Oh, he’s the next this, that,’ man I’ve seen that happen to so many fighters. It happened to me. I started believing the hype and I started losing fights."

Vera is as curious as the rest of us are about what Jones is truly capable of, and feels it’s hard to gauge how good Jones is because his competition hasn’t been world-class. "Matt Hamill was supposed to be the first guy to really test me," Jones points out, "And it wasn’t much of a test." Still, Jones sees himself as the underdog in this fight, which means he probably hasn’t checked out the betting lines yet.

Well if you count Hamil, Jones has finished two of his four UFC fight. The other two he won by unanimous decisons. And before the UFC, he had finished all his fights by TKO/KO/SUB.

If i'm not mistaken Hamil was the only guy Jones has stopped in the UFC, but all his decisions have been extremely one sided and impressive. I could easily see this going to decision.

Vera is extremely over rated and Bones should prove that when they fight. I think DW knows this and is in fact counting on it.

I heard the release is titled "12 to 6"

This just in, War Bones' new single is a Pink Floyd cover from their massively influential "The Wall" album. The follow-up to their massive hit "In My Opinion", "Vera" is expected to hit the airwaves on March 22nd, after a live premiere at an ultimate fighting event on the 21st.

War Bones is believed to be on the verge of releasing their debut album, but details are hard to come by, including even the name of the forthcoming release.

A spokesman for the band did not immediately respond with a comment.

Anybody else think Jones should come in to some Pink Floyd? Vera...Vera.... what has become of you?

All three of the big fights on this card look awesome. I think Vera and Jones could go either way. Both have crazy stand up and are very talented. I'm pulling for Vera on this one. Still say he got robbed on the Randy fight. Gonzaga vs Dos Santos is going to be amazing as well. Both guys are big, have lots of power and great BJJ credentials. Once again I guess I'm pulling for the underdog on this one but I'd love to see Napao pull this one off. A nice sub or hell he's due another out of nowhere "cro copping" of someone. Here's hoping. Either way I can't complain. Then Kongo and Buenetello, can anyone say K-1 match? This is going to be a fight like the Vera vs Jones fight. I don't see anyone going to the ground unless they get knocked down or out. I think Kongo's stand up is a little more diverse but I never count out the head hunter. He's got crazy power in his hands. All of these fights are made even better by the fact that they're going to be free on VS so the 21st needs to hurry up and get here!

Hahaha...the first sentence of this article made me laugh. I didn't know nut-hugging came in "levels" with "purity" and "intensity"

The difference between Vera and Jones is that Jones' ego won't allow him to believe the hype - he's too humble for that. See, that's always been Vera's problem - he thinks too highly of himself. That's why his shit went downhill fast.

Agreed this is Jones' biggest test, but a test he is likely to Ace. This may go more than 2 rounds, but is unlikely to go to decision. Jones by brutal spinning elbow.

BTW... Stay tuned folks, a new album from "War Bones" will be hittin' the stores soon. ReX13 on lead guitar/vocals with robthom and myself backin' him up on bass and drums. It's time to ROCK!

I see what you've done.
The point was made awhile ago IMO.
robthom- March 12, 2010 at 8:16 am
""War Bones" would make an awesome band name."

You have a legitimate point there.
jimbonics- March 12, 2010 at 6:58 am

Gonazga v Dos Santos will be a friggin WAR.
jimbonics- March 12, 2010 at 6:56 am
I wouldn't say all boring fights. He beat the shit out of Couture. Dropped that old man with a kick to the leevur.

These are two long and lanky dudes. It'll be a good fight. I'll take Vera for the experience factor. Matt Hammil != Randy Couture or even Fabricio Werdum. It took him all of one minute to beat Frank Mir's ass. I don't care what state Mir was at that point in his career.

vera lost his luster when he lost to werdum. it was downhill from there, no ko wins and all boring fights. and he once said he'll have both the LHW and HW belts. bones jones is a big promise for the LHW division and should be one of the top dogs in line for the belt.
do santos always makes awesome and exciting fights and always finishes his opponents.

I just don't see how Jones could turn out to be a flop. He's got the longest reach in the history of the UFC for cryin out loud. His wrestling and takedowns are just ridiculous, and if he can dominate an olympic wrestling gold medalist like that, I can't imagine who will be able to stuff those crazy throws.
ReX13- March 12, 2010 at 6:45 am
"War Bones" would make an awesome band name.
Viva Hate- March 12, 2010 at 6:17 am
This should be a very good test for Jones on whether he is legit or not. Hopefully an entertaining fight and card, at least its free!
