Video: Jake Shields Expects to Be Taken Down by GSP, But Says He Isn’t Scared of Being on His Back

(Video courtesy of YouTube/MMACanada)

Jake Shields was in Toronto recently for a photo shoot at Xtreme Couture for Jakt Apparel and he spoke briefly to MMACanada about his upcoming UFC 129 bout in the city with UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre while he was there.

For those of you whose bosses don’t like you wasting your work day watching videos on YouTube, the transcription is below.

His thoughts on the fight with St-Pierre:
“I think it’s gonna be a great fight. I’m excited. GSP is a phenomenal fighter. I have a ton of respect for him. It’s gonna be an all out war, but I see myself winning. It’s a fight I’m going out there to win. I’m not going out there to get beat in the fight. I’m going out there to be the new UFC champ.”

How he thinks their skill sets match up:
“I think our wrestling is pretty even, but I think I have the edge in the submission game.”

Whether or not he’s been working on his stand-up for this fight (duh!):
“Yeah, of course. I’m doing a ton of stand-up. A good part of this fight might be on the feet. I know Georges has good stand-up, so I’m gonna be ready for whatever he has to bring.”

Whether or not he thinks GSP will try to grind out a decision:
“It’s what he’ll try to do. He’ll try to finish. He’s out there trying to put fights away. He needs to go out there and try to do whatever it takes to win. He’s a smart fighter. He’s obviously not a huge finisher, but he’s capable of finishing. I’m not letting it get into my head that Georges can’t finish because certainly he’s got a lot to prove right now and he’s gonna go out there and come out with a different pace.”

How he sees the fight finishing and whether or not he thinks St-Pierre will take him down:
“I think I’m going to submit him. He’s not easy to submit, but I’m gonna be hunting for submissions from every angle. I think he’ll take me down and I’ll be on my back this fight, but I can fight off my back, so…”

SnackDaddy I was right there with ya till ya threw in that GSP left hook ko... um, GSP has never KO'd anyone, combos against a punch drunk over the hill hughes, knees to serra, corner stoppage w/ penn, fitch took all he had and was never close to going out and I'm pretty sure fitch didn't block any punches.

These guys are two real deal pro's. They don't need the childish smack talk to get their job done. No matter who wins, there is no loser in this fight since these are both quality guys and solid fighters.

Exactly. Jake couldn't sub Kampman and almost lost that fight. I don't see what the whole hype is about. Georges is the most clever and well-trained fighter in the UFC right now. He'll come in with a perfect gameplan. He'll jab Shields until his left eye falls into his head. Then he'll take Shields down, cross his guard, get side control and it'll be lights out Shields.
Another way i see this turning out is Georges plain out knocing shilds with a hook. there has been so much talk about a ground war than Georges might just pull that out of the hat.

Shields cut to 170 hurt him against Kampman, and that was a 3 round fight that was closer to a draw than a split decision. No way Shields is going 5 rounds. I look for GSP to finish in the 4th or 5th.

So, Jake, looks like you've got a big zit on your face there... what have you been doing to counter your recurring zits and bacne?

i hope nate diaz chirps and then suckerpunches david loiseau

Shields needs to out-strike or out-wrestle GSP. It seems unlikely he'll be able to lock up a submission -- I've never seen GSP remotely threatened by a submission. His ground game is too conservative and his strength too great.

i think with come clever editing you could turn this interview into a jake shields snuggie infomercial.

@ Fried Taco - I think the phrase is, "Well if that isn't the friendly, effeminate man calling the polite Frenchman gay."
Joedirt- April 18, 2011 at 1:54 pm
GSP will try to keep it on their feet, unless he thinks he's hurt Shields. Shields best chance is on the ground.

apparently jake shields has been training hard off of his back at an astounding pace with an 85 yr old tortoise as his sparring partner
LOKI- April 18, 2011 at 12:34 pm
@Romanhelmut-Hendo couldnt get back up.
Romanhelmut- April 18, 2011 at 12:17 pm must be drunk. I see it like RearNakedSpoon....TKO for GSP in round 3 or 4. Jake seems like a nice guy and is different that way than GSP's previous smack talkers of Kos, Hardy, Penn etc...Wonder if that will lull GSP a bit?

If somebody sets up a paypal account to bring back the edit button, I got five on it.

El Guapo...looks like you are having one hell of a day, brah. I can relate.
knucklesamitch- April 18, 2011 at 12:02 pm
GSP, Anderson Silva, Nick Diaz. Those are the names of fighters that I've learned just win. That's it. No matter how you think a fight will go, or how a specific opponent has game planned to deal with them, once the bells rings, it NEVER goes that way.
El Guapo- April 18, 2011 at 11:59 am
Jame = Jake

Edit button = Extinct
El Guapo- April 18, 2011 at 11:59 am
^Not by choke or knockout(BWAHAHAHA), either. What I'm trying to say is, when Jame fights it's usua.. ZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzz
El Guapo- April 18, 2011 at 11:56 am
Shieldzzz wins via sleeper hold. Well, technically not a sleeper "hold", but he will put GSP to sleep.
Goat- April 18, 2011 at 11:49 am
GSP will makes Shields want to stay at 185.
RearNakedSpoon- April 18, 2011 at 11:34 am
I think Shields will take down GSP but GSP will get back up and then use more effective jabs for spacing while chopping his legs so he can no longer shoot effectively leading to a knock down a TKO victory by GSP in the 4th.
Dizzylittlelord- April 18, 2011 at 11:13 am
this is either a grappling clinic or a technical battle on the feet. gsp is smart enough not to get subbed(again) and wont get beaten on the feet by shields
Fried Taco- April 18, 2011 at 11:11 am
lol Jake talking about Georges being able to finish. That's like the black calling the kettle... er, something.
LOKI- April 18, 2011 at 10:59 am
Why should he be? GSP couldnt finish a women with 25 minutes between her legs let alone Jake Shields.
