Video: James Toney Ready to Flop Like a Manatee, Sting Like a Stingray Against ‘Octopus’ Couture

(Video courtesy

Not wanting to be outdone by smack-talking sonnet writer Chael Sonnen, James Toney is stepping up the pre-fight banter ahead of his UFC 118 showdown with Randy Couture on August 20.

In his most recent interview with, the 41-year-old International Boxing Association heavy weight champion who likens himself to a stingray, calls Couture "a octopus" who he says would be the equivalent of "a bum in boxing" skill-wise. He once again attempts to goad the former UFC light heavyweight and heavyweight champion into standing and trading with him "like a man" and not laying on top of him "f-ing him like he’s his girlfriend."

I’m starting to think "Lights Out" is a bit more concerned about being on his back than he’s letting on.

On the bright side, James, maybe Randy will give you half of his money and let you keep his last name after he beats you lays on top of you for three rounds.

Here’s what Toney had to say about Couture and his style of fighting:

"Randy….respect to him. He’s a legend in this sport. In boxing, he would be considered a bum. He’s runnin’ his mouth sayin’ he’s gonna do this and do that. Talk is cheap. Bring your ass. Be a man. Come fight me. If you want to wrestle or lay on top of somebody, go fuck with your girlfriend. Don’t fuck with me like that, cos’ I’m gonna hurt you. I promise you."

"He’s a holder. Like I said, I’ve been in there with the best in the world, man. He ain’t never seen nobody like me before in his life. I don’t care if it’s MMA, boxing or whatever; he ain’t never seen nobody like me. I’ve seen it. I’ve been there. I’ve fought clinchers. Maybe not huggers like this dude. This dude’s like a octopus, but you know what? What happens to a octopus if he goes into a stingray? You know what [happens]? That’s what’s gonna happen. In order for you to grab me and get close to me, you have to get in my range. And when you get in my range, that’s when I’m gonna take yo’ head off."

"Everybody come out, “What you gonna do about this?” Man, dirty boxing, wrestling – his wrestling is nothing. In order for you to wrestle, you have to get close and once you get into that range, it’s over with. All I need is three inches to hit you – that’s all I need. If it’s a rib, I’m gonna break it. Put it this way, on August 20, I’m gonna break something on Randy Couture. I’m either gonna break his jaw, or I’m gonna break his ribs – either or, whichever comes first."

And here’s Toney’s somewhat interesting take on where boxing and MMA stand today:

"Everyone know that boxing is still the number one sport in the world, even though the UFC and MMA are puttin’ on better shows. I’ll give you all that. I’m not gonna dispute that at all. But you know boxing is still the number one sport in the world. What else you gonna get when two men stand toe-to-toe, blow-for-blow? Instead, in this sport right here, you got one man who’s scared to get hit and another man who all he wants to do is lay on you. That’s not exciting."

OK , that bumps you up to like 118th. Still, good call. I will throw in my lot as #119 and say I'm with ya. You heard it here 118th and 119th!
nickyroose- August 4, 2010 at 11:37 am
Damn-it! The 100,000th? I didn't knocked out or refereee stoppage I said submit to strikes, to further specifiy I'll say verbal submit to strikes.
fatbellyfrank- August 4, 2010 at 1:15 am
Yeah I'm hoping for an epic beatdown followed by a WWE style meltdown, and all his crew in the cage tryin to pretend they're as bad ass as the Diaz boys, and from that point forward the name James Toney will be greeted by loud laughter from all members of the MMA community.
I wouldn't mind seeing Randy turn this fuckers thighs into hamburger mince, you know with some of them side check kicks
dranokills- August 3, 2010 at 11:00 pm
I couldn't sit through all that mumbling shit, but somewhere in there he said something about "in your ass" or something to that I don't recall ever seeing Ali, or Sugar ray putting ANYTHING in anyone's ass. I think this closet homo is having a hard time with reality, but I can bet Mumble Tony will pull a Daley, and attack Randy as soon as the fights over, cause it will be over in the first round, soon as Randy ducks one of his wild fatass armed slowed down meat punches, and takes mumbles down and cracks his head open. Then on top of that Dana will go in and fire this fat fuck, and prolly get attacked by his crazy crack-laden posse.
ohhh yeah we are gonna be laughing about this stupid douche for years.

@mickymoose - Don't think I heard it from you first, actually you're like the 100000th person to say it, but still a good call.

Dammmmm Toney talks a hilariously good game. I want to see this fight more and more every time he opens his mouth. He called Brock "A big little sissy." He said he was gonna beat Dana's ass. "Fuck Dana White" I believe were the words. Has anyone in the UFC ever even said that on camera, let alone said it and still had a job in the UFC? Comedy gold.

@ o9zubyo9 Just so we're clear here, Every notable Boxer you've heard of is set on a particular career path very early on. They have mostly extensive amatuer careers, then switch to a number of journeyman and "ham and egg" fighters how are specifically picked and cultivated to never beat anyone, and then they fight until they have massive amounts of victories at which point they choose a promoter whoo will pump them up some more before placing them in a maximized profit scenario. How do you think it's possible Julio Cesar Chavez had 50 wins? Do you think any more than 10 of the were world class? I loved boxing but in reality it is a totally corrupt bullshit. And if you want to see some fucking hugging atch any major fight. At least 70% of the time spent is out of range or hugging, not clinching or grappling, literally hugging. But for some reason boxing has never outlawed the clinch and boxer's are allowed to clinch up to 10,000 times per round.

Anyway while fully admitting to being a big Randy fan you have to look at his numbers in context, how many were for the most competitive belts at the most competitive weight-classes in the most competitive promotion. He also lost after beating three guys in a night and not being able to keep it up. No pro boxing champion has fought more than once a year in decades and none has fought more than once a night in three-quarters of a century. Randy is a legend because he fought the best available and was found to be worthy. More than could be said for Fedor or Mason Dixon.

Also Randy won't just lay on top of Toney. We will pound his ass out from top. Toney will submit to strikes from the mounted position. Heard it here first

All I heard was mumbling ...

rampage vs toney would be a great fight.....or at least the smack talking leading up to it would be
fatbellyfrank- August 3, 2010 at 5:32 pm
Dear Lord,
Please, Please, let Randy destroy and humiliate this retart, I dont ask for much, but this time I mean it Lord, for the good of mankind we need this gibbering fool shut up good and proper. Please Lord, give us this one thing and I'll stop bugging you for the lottery numbers every week

itsgalf- August 3, 2010 at 5:01 pm
hahaha I'm not Rashad Evans...I'm not Quinton Jackson. I'm not going to kiss your ass...I'm going to knock you out
DangadaDang- August 3, 2010 at 4:11 pm
@ o9whatever

You do realize that Randy has the ability to submit people with no ground experience whatsoever correct?
o9zubyo9- August 3, 2010 at 3:47 pm
Just so we are all clear here. Randy's record is 18 wins and 10 losses. Not so great. I'm not a Randy hater but his record is not that of legend. He lost to Valentijn Overeem and Ricco Rodriguez. James Toney makes some pretty good points. And all it takes is one punch for Randy to lose. Randy's only hope is to, like James said, lay on top of him and hump out a decision.
Almost North- August 3, 2010 at 3:29 pm
^^I have no idea whats going on there but you mentioned Bill Cosby so I laughed anyway.
StinkFacer- August 3, 2010 at 2:51 pm
James Toney: Fat Albert and Mushmouth's secret love child.

Bill Cosby: The first black man to blush.

James Toney: Friggga Frigafrash Frigga fraka sufferin succertash, hey heeeeeey.

Yes I know what you are saying. You don't have to keep asking
Dick_Gozenya- August 3, 2010 at 1:50 pm
I gotta say though... I kinda like the guy... definitely one of god's own high powered prototypes for sure. He might be a nut, but at least he isn't playing a role.
Dick_Gozenya- August 3, 2010 at 1:32 pm
James Toney is high on life.
Spicymeatball- August 3, 2010 at 1:25 pm
Not that we didn't already know this but he's already lost. At least a few weeks ago I could appreciate him genuinely thinking he had a chance to win, by saying he was simply gonna "not get taken down", but now I think he realizes how fucked he is. Unless he cleanly connects within the first 30 seconds of the fight hes doomed and he knows it now.
Videodrome_NOW- August 3, 2010 at 1:24 pm
i might need a translator, but did he say he was going to beat Dana White's ass for talking shit about him? That's fucking crazy-awesome.
Kid Clam Curtains- August 3, 2010 at 1:12 pm

I hope he's doing plenty of underwater rock carrying to prepare for Randy.
MediumRare- August 3, 2010 at 1:01 pm
Standing ovation.

I didn't understand all of that but I'll take my hat off to him: he sure knows how to make a man want to watch a fight.
