Video: Jon Jones Goes Into Angsty Teenager Mode During Botched Interview Segment at TUF 17 Finale

(Props: fueltv via MMAConvert)

Going head-to-head against UFC promo king Chael Sonnen would be a tall order for anybody — but you’d think that Jon Jones would at least try to make it competitive. In case you missed it, here’s Jon and Chael’s interview segment from the TUF 17 Finale broadcast, in which Jones acts like a 15-year-old whose weed stash was just discovered by his stepdad. The first words out of Jones’s mouth are a slurred jumble of Ortizian proportions. He can’t stop swinging his arms. He won’t make direct eye contact. He refuses to address Sonnen — who continues his carnival-barking, undeterred — even though this segment was specifically arranged to generate interest in their UFC 159 fight in two weeks. As David Letterman might say, “Jon, I’m sorry you couldn’t be here tonight.”

This clip unfortunately leaves off the very end, in which Jones sulks off stage left at his first opportunity, while Sonnen remains standing next to Jon Anik; Jones may still be the light-heavyweight ruler of the Octagon, but Sonnen has rightfully claimed his territory in front of the camera. We’ll give Jon the benefit of the doubt and say he was trying to come off as intensely focused, instead of bored, or pissed off, or half-drunk. Either way, it was a missed opportunity to spark some more fan-interest in a fight that is completely uninteresting from a competitive standpoint. That’s no way to get some fans, bro.

Jon doesn't need you as a fan bro. Or any of the real haters. I had some guy say what Jon has done is worst than Tyson and Rashad. Now that is real hate. Jones 25: Confidence, Chooses his words and actions with increasing maturity, DUI with 2 25 yr old women, untouched in ring vs. tyson: Convicted rapest, unpredictable buligerence, profanity on live TV, arguably the greatest upset loss in sports history and biting a man's ear off. vs Rashad, racist rants against rampage, childish whinning about Jones and Jackson (sorry but anyone with eyes could see Jones had more potential), in appropriate and insensitive jokes about child molestation (bing Rashad and Sanduski comments), got KTFO my Machida and lumped up by Jones. haters gotta hate.

to me it looks liks jones wants to break chaels face in this video and he's mad that he has to play nice while they do this bullshit interview.
Nippletwist- April 17, 2013 at 9:14 am
angsty teenager? because he's not talking shit?? and what does that make chael in this equation? a mature adult? pre-pubescent child?? i dunno you guys at the Cagepotato occasionally have some interesting characterizations of things. and by interesting i mean you misrepresent things based on your bias towards different fighters. kinda dumb, but hey yeah sure whatever jon jones is an angsty teenager because he's not writing dorky retarded nursery rhymes like chael "the fail". makes sense guys!
dipsetkilla316- April 16, 2013 at 8:15 pm
"Not even sonnen mommy believes he can win" lol that's pretty funny. I don't think that's up for debate though, lets face it he really has no chance.
chumpmasher- April 16, 2013 at 12:08 pm
I wounder how all the Chael fanboys will react to his annihilation! I bet regardless of the outcome they will think he won some how.
KingRaymo202- April 16, 2013 at 7:19 am
So penfifteen...let me get this straight...machida can turn down the fight with Jones when Henderson got injured(2 wks b4-didn't tell anyone-really) Jones turns the fight with "Sonnen" and every1 slams Jones for not taking that fight on short notice. Bullshit!!!
Not even Sonnen's momma believes he's gonna win this fight. All U Jones haters need 2 understand this business.
It's not fucking boxing...where U can talk you're way in 2 big money fights. Oh, Chael already did that...the bitch that he is!!! I said it! Jones is gonna show U just how much of a mismatch this was even when Jones "turned down" the other attempt at Sonnen trying 2 ride someone else's fame. Cuz that's the kinda guy he is.
U must be a "De-La-HOE-ya" fan also.

Show me one other instance in UFC history in which a card was cancelled because a title holder refused a replacement opponent.
dipsetkilla316- April 15, 2013 at 11:15 pm
@penfifteen how does his personality effect weather you want to watch jones fight or not, he is undefeated, and has fought the greatest fighters in the LHW division, and finished most of them. Who gives a flying fuck what he says I just wanna see him fight. It's quit perfect that cheal is ur boy, he talks alot(which I'm guessing is y u watch mma in the first place, by ur logic)and is very boring in fights, most of the time. It's funny how different they are, one talks alot(even though I love cheal)and isn't very good, but the other doesn't talk as much yet is very good. Also if Dana didn't water down 151 maybe that card wouldn't of been cancelled. You really expect for some one to defend there belt on 8 days notice, against a deferent opponent. Like gsp wouldn't of done the EXACT SAME THING AND U DEFINITELY KNOW IT. show me a guy that says that gsp wouldn't of done the same thing, and I'll show you a liar.
danomite- April 15, 2013 at 3:20 pm
@get off me - I don't need to watch this fight to know who will win. Chael is almost certainly going to lose. Sure, everybody has a puncher's chance, but do you expect people to shell out 50 bucks for a squash match when the squasher doesn't even want to be in the same ring as the squashee? Jones has been very open about how much he thinks fighting chael is beneath him. So who am to expect anything different than Jon Jones jabbing and kneekicking his way to a 5-round decision.
Get Off Me- April 15, 2013 at 3:50 pm
I'm shellin out 50 for Healy/Miller...that's gonna be a hot mess of a fight FOTN candidate on paper to me. I agree with your assesment of how this match will go(save the 5rd, think it will be done inside two) but there are some interesting points to look at 1)will chael land a takedown 2)will Jones TKO or Sub Chael...You know your gonna watch. What about Chael's talk, that doesn't make you wanna put down some cash?
danomite- April 15, 2013 at 1:33 pm
I'm not going to fault a guy for being a bad public speaker (the exception being Tito), but at least pretend to be interested in this fight. If Jon Jones has no interest in this fight, why should I?
chumpmasher- April 16, 2013 at 12:04 pm
At least your last point was solid
Get Off Me- April 15, 2013 at 2:14 pm
Beacause you want to see who will this not what it comes down to? It's not a public speaking contest and not too long ago a guy named Chuck Liddell wouldn't say much other than "I'm gonna knock him out" and people would care. It seems with Chael around we enter an alternate universe, emphasis shifts away from the sport of mixed martial arts onto how much of a gangster Chael is, which is not for everyone clearly. Judging by this thread Jones and his silence is the more popular topic of conversation than Chael and his recycled act.
Pen Fifteen- April 15, 2013 at 1:28 pm
I mean, seriously, can anyone name a single elite professional athlete in the world as singularly uncharismatic as Jon Jones?
Pen Fifteen- April 15, 2013 at 1:26 pm
@Get Off Me
The problem is that when Jones refused to fight Chael at 159, he also cost everyone else fighting on that card a paycheck. This is why people hate him, something he clearly doesn't get. It has nothing to do with whether or not he is right to think Chael doesn't "deserve" at title shot (as if deserve has had fuck-all to do with the way people have gotten title shots in the UFC), but rather with the way Jones sees himself as the absolute epicenter of the universe.

I hear this shit all the time about how Jones is just real, and that's what people want to see...if that's what people want to see, why the fuck is Chael so wildly popular? It wouldn't hurt Jones to show a scintilla of personality. It's clear the guy sees himself as better than everyone else, but the utter contempt he shows for other human beings, especially for fans with fists full of cash, makes me not give two shits about him, win or lose.
Get Off Me- April 15, 2013 at 1:57 pm
I think it is debatable who is to blame for the cancellation of UFC 159 and we have covered this, it was not Jones alone who cost these fighters their paychecks, or delayed as all fights were moved around. I think when you are the champ/epicenter of a division, people will see you that way and like with GSP and A.Silva many people hate on this inevitably. I agree that Jones is a little short on personality and I do not think he is very "real"(connor mcgregor/nick diaz are real) and there is some sort of elitism to the way he carries himself, but look at the greats in many sports and tell me they do not have similar characteristics(woods, jordan etc).
As for Chael being so wildly popular, I think this is what Jones is trying to prove with the silent treatment, that trash talk alone truly means very little in this sport. I believe Chael is not nearly as popular as he is made out to be, this whole intangible trash talk factor cannot be quantified in numbers. The whole notion that he is a large PPV draw really discredits A.Silva(who has had higher numbers fighting other opponents)as well as in Silva/Sonnen2 Fogrif and Tito(who historically are top PPV draws). Look at his fight against Stann+Bisping, look at where the fights were on the card, the tv ratings in time slot when Chael fought and it is rather clear that he is not the ratings/popular/big draw he has been made out to be by so many. This fight will be another good example, as Jones is not a huge draw by himself(like Silva, Fo grif, Tito who Chael has shared PPV's with) Sonnen's wildly popular status will be put to the test.

jonesy aint even man enough to stand up for himself. guy has a personality/ mentality of a child. his chances might be slim but im rooting for the real american gangster. jones aint nothin but a snitch, punk bitch
Get Off Me- April 15, 2013 at 1:05 pm
Jon has Chael in checkmate effortlessly. Chael 180'd back to his pre Okami fight persona for TUF and Jones tolerated him, now that Chael is back to his copycat trash talk ways, Jones is shutting it down. Jones refused to fight Chael the first time because he does not want to promote this joker at all, now that they will be fighting, expect much more of this until Chael eventually fizzles out due to lack of reaction. Jon's silence>Chael contrived rip off hack trash talk. I feel like I am watching WWE tryout videos of jabroni's tryna talk smack into the camera. Reminds me of when Tyson was beating the brakes off all the big mouth HW's back in the day.
Imnotamoose- April 15, 2013 at 8:44 am
Jones just trys waaaay to hard. I reckon his nerples were purpled quite often during his childhood.
teep- April 15, 2013 at 8:30 am
The "gansta" reference is so 1998. Plus, Chael is white as far as I can tell.

Yeah, do it for Save Olympic Wrestling! How did that not get a rise out of Jon? He probably had to pee real bad, and was pissed he had to do the interview first.
algiersheadkick504- April 15, 2013 at 6:29 am
Chael admits he is prolly going down...but its okay he will like a gangsta
