Video: Jose Aldo’s Weight Cut for UFC 129 Was a Total Nightmare

Add this to the list of explanations as to why Jose Aldo nearly fell apart in the last round of his title defense against Mark Hominick. As the above video illustrates, the UFC featherweight champ suffered through the worst weight cut of his career before UFC 129 in April. Aldo’s coach Andre “Dede” Pederneiras explains that Junior had packed on more muscle than he had in the past, and was forced to cut 6.6 more pounds on the day of weigh-ins. Aldo’s training partner Marlon Sandro guides us through the weight cut process, which involves a lot of weight loss cream and a hot bath (“it feels like your skin is melting”).

With 1.1 pounds to go, Aldo mentally breaks down, refusing to cut any more, damn the consequences. The video leaves us hanging for part 2 for some reason, but look, we all know what happened; Aldo made the weight, and showed obvious signs of fatigue in his fight the next day. No matter what happens in his title defense against Kenny Florian at UFC 136 on October 8th, Aldo’s days in the 145-pound division may be numbered.

@ danomite, Aldo was injured prior to the fight with Hominick so he had put on a lot of muscle before camp, maybe not an excuse but an explanation. I think Aldo will hang at 145 for a while, he has never missed weight so I don't see this as a big deal, down the road though I would love to see him at lightweight

"This video is private."

Good times. I love the part in the video where it told me it was private. That was my favorite part.

Damn... I remember being at weighins for 129 and seeing how miserable and drawn out he looked. Didnt know he was THAT bad. Big ups to him for sticking around after the weighins for that silly super 6 event with all the champs.

I can't watch the video... the image of 2 dudes lurking over a little tanned hispanic fella in a bathtub with SUPER creepy looking undies on is enough to put me off the story.

i don't see how this makes you respect him more than before. I understand that he endured a lot of pain to cut the weight to 145 but that's what he's supposed to do. It's part of his job. If he didn't do it then he'd lose the belt and a lot of money. His manager even said that the cut was harder because of extra muscle and not because of an illness or injury. If cutting to 145 is this hard for him then he should move up to lightweight.

I haven't updated my edition of Kiss, Bow, or Shake Hands in a decade so I'm not up to date with Brazilian culture, but is it customary for Brazilians to make up this many excuses after a win?

Aldo is a beast, my favorite fighter. I think he could move up to 155 and do extremely well. No disrespect to Frankie Edgar or Gray Maynard, but he would murder them both. Would love to see him at 155.

i think it might be sweet sweat they are using.

Im excited to see how Aldo will match up with the 155ers in the future.

I watched the video and definitely looks like Albolene.
MyDonkeyPunch- September 30, 2011 at 8:01 am
@ Karma - I haven't watched the video but I'm going to guess it's something along the lines of Albolene. Albolene is a makeup remover that opens up your pores and allows you to sweat a hell of a lot. It has the consistency of Vasoline. I used it for my last tournament and it was brutal. You lose a lot of water weight really quick.

Taco you sick mother fucker.. I love you to death. No seriously though I really am curious.

It's an Oriental cream, called Sum Yun Gai.

I'm curious to know what happened to Part 2. I wanted to see it to see if it showed any of the sickness or infection or whatever the other theories were. I wonder what he'll do differently for this cut?
KarmaAteMyCat- September 30, 2011 at 7:34 am
I've always had a lot of respect or Aldo but it just went up ten fold. I love this dudes commitment and what he has done for the fans, he's just a beast. Anyone know what cream they use?
