Video: Miguel Torres Rolls Out of Bed to Co-Host “MMA Live”

A slightly hungover-looking Miguel Torres showed up to co-host this week’s edition of ESPN’s "MMA Live," and despite looking like he wants to throw up a couple times he does a pretty good job.  I mean, he’s no Kenny Florian, but MMA’s best internet TV show is such that they can plug almost anyone into the fighter seat and Jon Anik and Franklin McNeil can carry them across the finish line.  Anyone, except Stephan Bonnar, who shows up midway through this episode to stare blankly and stumble through sentences like a robot that is running out of power.

One of the more interesting topics in this episode is whether the delay in the Brock Lesnar/Frank Mir heavyweight showdown helps or hurts Lesnar.  Given his relative inexperience with MMA (particularly the old submissions game, if you know what I mean), you might think that more time in the gym would only benefit the big man.  But Torres offers the fighter’s perspective, suggesting that what will really benefit him is getting in the cage as soon as possible and becoming a better fighter through experience.

What are your thoughts, Potato Nation?  Does this rescheduling give Lesnar more time to develop, or does it simply screw with his training schedule?

FUCK A FRANKLIN McNEIL
beast Lesnar is gonna FUCK up Mir- March 15, 2009 at 10:35 am
time off = better for lesnar. because you learn more in several months of training than up to 25 mins in a cage. especially when you have been a champion wrestler and yes, a tv star. the big stage and spotlight just arent the same hindrance.
Franklin sucks- March 15, 2009 at 12:38 am
Get rid of Franklin -- he's the token black guy. He knows less than nothing about MMA, get someone with some MMA fighting or coaching experience!

The layoff will hurt Lesner. The longer the wait the longer Lesner remains a fighter with only 4 professional fights anticipating a rematch with the only person to beat him in the octagon. Mir put a dent in that whole invincible image that he has been going for. Lesner also now has the title and just ask GSP what having the title for the first time does for your mindset and readiness. Just like a football coach calls a time out before a critical field goal kick at the end of a game to make the kicker have to think about the pressure for longer, the layoff may be the best thing to happen for Frank Mir. The more time that passes the more confidence built from the Couture win will be replaced by doubt. Confidence bordering on cockiness has been the thing that drove Lesner to succeed, if that goes away we may see a different fighter in the cage.

Brock is big and can throw his fists like punches. More time off doesn't amount to better submission defence and lets admit it, his arms are to big to permit an offensive submission game. More time off means that his hulking fists will learn to find accuracy and maybe he'll learn how to GnP correctly. Unfortunately Brock isn't going away. He was spoonfed a title shot but he took the whole semi truck trailer of babyfood. Like it or leave it, Brock is getting better everyday in or out of the cage.

Down syndrome is over-rated.

aha bonnar was straight spacing out. Once he got going, the comments weren't too bad, still had that same blank face and robotic voice, though.

A CONFUSED STEPHAN BONNAR APPEARS
Quatoof- March 14, 2009 at 4:00 pm
Either way, he still has a big dick on his chest so who cares about him really?
MMA Wannabe- March 14, 2009 at 1:45 pm
Hey, hey, hey, I actually liked Stephan Bonnar on MMA live; he may have been a robot but he had some real enthusiasm.

Okay, maybe he was just hilariously incompetent. But that's still hilarious, right?

The layoff helps lesnar. He's got more time to figure out heel hook/ knee bar defense. Additionally, i doubt mir will even be 100% by fight time which makes Lesnar's impending steam roll even easier for him.

its probably from that spinning back elbow that hit him in the back of the head, in his last fight

Torres is probably right about the fight delay. Erection Chest could use the extra time to train in submissions and submissions defense, but he also needs more experience in the cage in general. His normal everyday intellect may be up for debate, but I think his fight IQ is solid and he is better each time we see him. I like Mir and his demolition of Big Nog was incredible, but I think Lesnar/Mir II ends a bit differently. I would be shocked shitless if the Big Les gave up an easy sub to Mir again.

Another important question is how does the extra time off effect Mir since he has had an admitted motivational problem in the past. I know he said he trained hard for Nog, but he seemed more surprised than anyone that he won. And worse yet, we find out later that Nog was supposedly far less than 100% .
With a knee scope there is a period of practical immobilty and that means trouble for the non self starter. This could hurt Mir.
ItburnswhenIpee- March 14, 2009 at 11:32 am
This is an important delay. It gives Lesnar time to get an ass tattooed on his back to match the penis tatooed on his chest.
Darwin- March 14, 2009 at 11:31 am
I really doubt he's a white belt over @ MMAA ... even if he's only been in the game for a year, that's still a year of BJJ (assuming he does it every week) combined w/ his wrestling experience (aka amazing top game) ... that's pretty sick.

Although, could be like a few MMA fighters and never even worry about their belt rank, or hell - he might not even train with a Gi ... who knows :(

... wonder if his offtheback game will ever be tested
The Juice- March 14, 2009 at 11:30 am
You guys are gonna be amazed when Lensar takes out Mir, but you shouldn't be. Your boy Randy got his ass handed to him in November. JUICE
Chinstroker- March 14, 2009 at 11:11 am
Gives him longer to cycle off the juice before his next piss test. Seriously though, he's had enough 'big event' experience to allow this to work in his favour, and buys some time to work his way up to BJJ white belt.

Imo they should find another replacement for the lesnar/mir fight. Ok an injury is a sad thing to get during a training session. But i think it hurts lesnar more to sitt out till mir is healthy again than to give lesnar a ( even if its a non-title ) fight. A loss wont hurt him or make him look weak if its the proper opponent
Kim Couture is a cunt- March 14, 2009 at 10:53 am
I think it gives me a few more months to be irratated by Lesnar.
The Juice- March 14, 2009 at 10:44 am
Still not as bad as Chuck falling asleep on that talk show, trying to pimp the 300 movie.

As far as Lesnar goes, put him in there whenever you want, the man's a beast. I really hope he beats Mir so people will quiet down with their anti-Brockisms.

Meohfumado- March 14, 2009 at 10:40 am
Also, glad they brought up giving updates on injured fighters later in the broadcast. If MMA doesn't want to be seen as a barbaric sport by the Reverend Shaw Moores of the New York legislature and elsewhere....they need to show proper concern for the injured as in other sports.
Meohfumado- March 14, 2009 at 10:38 am
I love how you could see the hamster in Bonnar's head slowly step onto the wheel, and eventually start running...damn thing must've been on ritalin or something.

I thought Torres did a great job though. Particularly when he said he would've torn the guy's neck off for waving to the crowd. I believe him, that little dude is a beast.
