Video: Mike Brown vs. Cole Province Unaired Prelim Fight From WEC 51

Due to a number of factors — including the broadcast starting nearly 10 minutes late thanks to a goddamned arena football game — we never got a chance to see the WEC 51 preliminary bout between former featherweight champion Mike Brown and Cole Province, even though it was the shortest fight of the night at just 78 seconds. Thankfully, Versus has made it up to y’all by posting the fight online; you can check it out after the jump. Watch as Brown drops Province with a well-timed uppercut, then smashes him from the top as Province turtles. The ref steps in, and Cole immediately goes into ‘WTFIYP’? mode. Was he just about to spring into action when the fight was called? Who knows. Who cares. Enjoy.

It was the right decision to keep the Lesnar/Carwin fight going, and this fight should have kept going too. Province didn't exactly look like he was on queer street to me, Brown wasn't getting in clean shots, and the ref didn't even give Province a chance to transition from turtle position to something considered an intelligent defense...He was starting to get up when the fight was stopped. I say it should have gone for at least 5-10 more seconds, or until Brown got in 2-3 CLEAN and hard shots.

Carwin didn't get robbed. Province did.
Lesnar was allowed to continue and so should have Province.

That was a horrible stoppage. One of the worst i've seen this year IMO. The man got rocked and fell back but none of Mike Browns shots afterwards got through. He was defending himself and doing it pretty well. Mike probably would've won the round, but that shouldn't have been stopped. What a shitty moment by the ref. I was excited to see the vid because when I read WEC's results I saw Mike Brown TKO. But that video showed Mike throw a nice punch and then get a lucky win. Nothing more.

@ihateemo

I disagree, stopped too early.
ihateemo- October 4, 2010 at 2:54 pm
Also, Mike Brown was just going to drop bombs until the other guy died of blood loss or blunt force trauma. The ref did the right thing stepping in.
ihateemo- October 4, 2010 at 2:52 pm
Christopher Walken did a great job with the commentary. I guess Bonnar got sick the day of the fight or something.
kmax1940- October 4, 2010 at 2:50 pm
yeah this made me think about Carwin vs Lesnar too!

they let that one go... and go... and go.

and they stop this one as the guy is getting up!!!!
GetUpAndKill- October 4, 2010 at 2:47 pm
Just let the F'n fight go refs!! With all this talk about how MMA does less damage than boxing and football etc. what is the point of an early stoppage to save the fighter. Let'em clearly get KTFO like Gamburyan. With that said, not the best idea to turtle up against Mike Brown.
natericklesmma- October 4, 2010 at 2:45 pm
they should let him the dude fight... wtf
overzealous ref's fucked up what woulda probley been a sick ass knockout... dude was just laying there like an idiot not doing shit but i still feel like they shoulda let it go a little longer
Ballkick- October 4, 2010 at 2:45 pm
Cole Province needs to get Josh Rothenthal in his pocket for his fights,......Josh would've let that go for at least another 4.5 min's. Just to make sure.......you know,....that his fighter had a chance to make a comeback.

If that stoppage was "a little early" what was the deal with Carwin vs Lesnar 1st round?
Charming Charlie- October 4, 2010 at 2:33 pm
Kim Winslow would have let that fight go on at least three minutes into the second round. C'mon ref!
just some dong- October 4, 2010 at 2:30 pm
Too early f'surely.
Fried Taco- October 4, 2010 at 2:13 pm
Dang, ugly vs. uglier! And you pick which is which.
J-Dog- October 4, 2010 at 2:12 pm
That stoppage did look just a few punches too early IMHO. I don't think the guy was hurt THAT badly and it was only like 3.5 seconds that they gave him to figure out what he was gonna do once Brown was on him. I'm with Blumpkin... it was a little early.
Sakuraba3900- October 4, 2010 at 2:06 pm
actually lesnar got a hold of wrist control for a second and was goin for the deep half guard yeah he got smashed for a second but he was trying to INTELLIGENTLY DEFEND HIMSELF

oh and why the hell did my other post get flagged...?
Merlin- October 4, 2010 at 2:03 pm
Keep on kicking, punching & choking your way back up to the top Mike, & remember BITCHES BE CRAZY.
amsterdamheavy- October 4, 2010 at 1:56 pm
Ya, probably an early stoppage, but the outcome was pretty clear.

You need to go back and watch Lesnar v Carwin if you think that Lesnar looked like Province for "almost a whole round".
C-Bus Allstar- October 4, 2010 at 1:55 pm
It was called early. But there wasn't anything that Province could do to keep from getting an asswhupping there.
topdog- October 4, 2010 at 1:47 pm
Its funny cause I seem to remember Lesnar turtle up for almost a whole round taking unanswered punches. And it was never stopped! Conspiracy theories anyone? Carwin got fugged...
