Steroids in MMA
Which MMA Fighter Will Test Positive For Steroids Next?

Video: New UFC Undisputed 2010 Promos

(Video courtesy

You’d think that, as a director for THQ’s latest promo spot for UFC Undisputed 2010 featuring Cain Velasquez, the last thing you would want to do would be to draw attention to the large script "Brown Pride" tattoo that is emblazoned across Mexican-American heavyweight’s chest. Apparently, that’s why you’re sitting at home surfing the Internet on a Tuesday night while the future Francis Ford Coppola is likely ballin’ around Cali making "Girls Gone Wild" videos on the regular.

Judging by his performance in the future TV spot, Velasquez isn’t going to be the token MMA fighter in a Sylvester Stallone movie any time soon.
THQ  also posted this Wikipedia-style fighting techniques video on their site, featuring Mark Laimon doing his monotone, uninspired best to explain  the differences between Greco-Roman versus freestyle wrestling as well as muay thai versus karate.

Unless you are my Nana, I suggest you turn the volume off when you watch this and just enjoy the slick new gameplay clips. If you are my Nana, please watch the clip over and over with the volume all the way up until you finally grasp what MMA is and what I write about for a living. Seriously. For the one-hundred-and-twenty-seventh-time, IT IS NOT the same as pro-wrestling, no, I do not know Gorgeous George, and yes, writing is a real job people can get paid to do.

Word is the demo, which boasts both Exhibition and Tournament modes, playable as Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, Lyoto Machida, Rashad Evans and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, will be available for download some time this month.

Just in case anyone actually cares...

I work in the justice system. Brown pride is not like white pride for a number of reasons.

1. Mexicans in Mexico often have a vast social dichotomy between light skinned Mexicans who show a predominately Spanish heritage and those who are closer to Mexicans Indians or Nuatle heritage. Thus, often being darker, browner is considered to be "less". Therefore Cain's tattoo is less about race and more about social constructions of race.

2. Brown pride is sort of like being proud of "La Raza" or the race. It specifically refers to Mexicans in this context. "White Pride" is a blanket term for hundreds of cultures which have absolutely no literal or figurative connection.

3. Up until 40 years ago "White" people were Anglo-Saxons. Now Irish, Italians, Jews, Eastern Europeans and many other historically different people are considered "white". Aryan is a word originally used to refer to people from Arabia. Also Caucasian was used to refer to people from the Caucasus Mountains, near Turkey were people were and are classically darker.

4. Therefore is looking to the historical context of "White Pride" especially when one traces there lineage to one of the races mentioned above, people's classically and rigorously determined to be "not White" it means you have pride in being not colored. i.e. a racist.

5. Furthermore "Brown Pride" Is sometimes used in gang reference. White pride is never NOT used as a gang reference or a subscription to an idea of "white" as a socially homogenous group that does not now or never has existed.

I have no idea why this spellcheck thinks I spelled "Homogenous" wrong because I didn't. I assume this will end these constant discussions that occur when we see Cain's tat.

His tat would be more appropriate if it was "Knockout Power"
darciesdaddy- April 21, 2010 at 9:32 am
Wow, sloppy. I'm so ashamed that white people like me have never accomplished anything in history except to kill and 'torcher' other races. But, that's just how we roll, I guess.

Every time I hear brown pride I think of Los Lobos from Short Circuit 2.

That has to be the most self hating, guilty white liberal thing I've heard in a long time. So whites have done nothing but bad, anyone brown is just dandy. Whether you're talking about blacks, hispanics, Muslims, or anyone else that's "brown", every culture that doesn't include white people has had some period of savagery and brutality, many of which are still going on today! Last time I checked, white people weren't responsible for crime in Rio, the Sharia influenced influx of violence and hate crimes in Europe, or ritualistic brutality towards women in Africa. Grow up you college shithead.

With that being said, you can like or dislike Cain because of his tattoo however you choose, it's a free country.
BryanF- April 21, 2010 at 7:17 am
Ughhhh...Don't we do this "brown pride" and "white pride" debate every time cain velasquez is featured on the front page?

rocejize- April 21, 2010 at 5:30 am
Alright brown power, white pride, who cares.... point is. Were they referring to the demo release THIS month as in April, or do we believe it is going to release in May right next to the game release.
Sloppy- April 21, 2010 at 4:43 am
Anything promoting white pride/power is not acceptable because of history... I don't know why anyone would have pride in being white, I mean, I can see pride in being American or from a certain state, but no one can honestly say that they are proud of being white, unless they are in support of the actions the race has taken, the white race as a whole has never banded together to do anything but torcher, kill and enslave other races. Until the "brown" people do anything remotely close to what the whites have done than I am okay with Cain's tattoo, it is an homage to his heritage. The heritage of white people is filled with murder and terror so it should not be given any homage... thats my 2 cents,,,, im white by the way

Using the term "Brown Pride" is fairly ubiquitous in mexican american culture.

There's probably a hundred gangs with that name just like there's a hundred more called Vatos Locos.
And it really doesn't have anything to do with gang culture specifically anyway. It says what it means in plain english.

Its more about expressing that he's proud of his heritage even though he's a member of a minority (barely anymore) in this country.
A brown pride tattoo in mexico for instance would pretty much lose its context.

Honestly I wouldn't have any more problem with somebody tattooing white pride on their chest anymore than brown pride or black pride (or oreo cookie pride for mayhem I guess).
But in my experience its usually a certain type of white dude who gets tattoos like that.
And they're usually not a lot of fun to be around.
They probably taint the reputation enough to kind of ruin it for anybody else who's considering getting one just to show how happy they are to be white.
Durden- April 21, 2010 at 3:46 am
wait wait hang on.. Does it really say Brown Pride?
I heard Goldberg say "..his tattoo on his chest which say Brown Pride" in the event where he killed Rothwell and I didn't believe he had a tattoo saying brown pride because that would be retarded..

But if one fighter would have "White Pride" instead he would be crucified straight away for it as some people have already said.

Had it said "(some nation) pride" it wouldn't have been the same but, pointing to a skincolor is a completely different ballgame.

Someone said history plays an effect on it, but man come on.. I don't see the difference between White/Brown Pride. Its just what we associate the phrase or symbol with.. The swaztika is actually a symbol for the sun and Nazi germany took it to represent their idiology. Granted having a swaztika tattood on your forhead saying its because you love the sun, you're obviously just asking for it and you'd have to be pretty dumb to do it. But it doesn't make it any less true.

But you're right, due to history saying brown pride as opposed to white pride would have different meanings to people. But I just think it's hypocritical

Brown Pride isn't racist.

Velasquez is.

I saw some submissions that wern't in 2009
SofaKingNyce- April 20, 2010 at 7:01 pm
white pride means that you take pride in your white race, white power means that the white race has power over every other race.
sharky- April 20, 2010 at 6:20 pm
Anyone else have a problem with the fact that all the in-game footage shown could have very well been footage from Undisputed 2009?? Absolutely none of the new features were shown.
Dante- April 20, 2010 at 6:09 pm
Killswitch is absolutely right.

and power and pride are most definitely not completely different things.
